Moderate shallow earthquake in Burma (Myanmar) – epicenter Bago

Important update 14:29 UTC : Thanks to ER reader Tarika, we have traced the Magnitude and depth of the earthquake. The Magnitude was rather strong with M4.3 and the depth very shallow at 14.2 km. Normally just below the minor damage level, but some cracks in walls cannot be excluded

Word of Thank You : Of course we will be continuing this article when more details are available, but at the moment we want to express our gratitude to the many people who informed earthquake-report.com on what was going on. In describing what was felt, we are able to make at least an estimate of what happened (excluding a strong to very strong earthquake, damage potential etc).

Important update 14:41 UTC : An ER reader wrote us a few moments ago : Myanmar authority said the epicenter was 35 miles south of Yangon in the sea and estimates that the magnitude would be 3-4.

Update 14:29 UTC : A Question for our Burmese / Myanmar readers :
Did you really felt a shaking feeling or only vibrations combined with sound ?
If the latter it may have been an explosion.

Update 14:23 UTC : This situation happens now and then in populated areas. Countries without an automated earthquake systems are leaving their population without any news, often for a long time. Politicians often underestimate the earthquake impact. Investing in such a system should be high priority for seismic sensitive countries.

Update 14:18 UTC : In case of a light or weak earthquake close to the capital, international seismic data may not arrive. If M4 to M4.5 it can take a while before we get to know the data.

The Myanmar earthquake was felt in Yangon, the nation’s capital.
We are currently waiting for more details from seismological agencies.
This can be a local weaker earthquake, or a stronger earthquake in a wider area.
We can almost exclude a very strong earthquake as it would have been reported by the international agencies by now.

  • Yangon, Burma - From the six floor of a recent concrete & rebar appartment building (bar style), a relatively slow swing (2-3 secs apart) weave was perceived.
  • Yangon, Dagon T/S - Felt the house shake for 2-3 seconds.

  • Yangon, Myanmar - A very short lasting earthquake was felt in Yangon Myanmar around 20:00 local time. Felt inside, and by some people out side, but not by all.
  • Dagon Township, Yangon - It lasted about 4-5 secs and was preceded by a noise sound, kinda something exploded.
  • Yangon - Some noticed the shake but not everyone.
  • Yangon, Burma - shaking sixth floor concrete apartment building for a few seconds

  • Wardan St, Lanmadow Twsh, Yangon - From the 7th floor, we could feel the building really shake, widows rattled, and some objects fell. It lasted for less than 10 seconds.
  • Pazundaung township - I was in my room n felt my bed n desk moving.. it was a bit strong.. that I was kind of feeling a bit shaky even mins after it finished xD n I guess it was like around 10 secs or less..
  • Wadan road , Landmadaw , Yangon - heard a loud shaking sound first , thought something seriously heavy thing fell from other floors from our 10 story building and then shaking waves followed so it must be earthquake..
  • Yangon,Hlaing Township - I felt from 2nd floor like heavy thing fell down on the ground. Water from water bottle is shaken.
  • Yangon - Very definitely an earthquake. I was on the hotel bed, and I felt what I thought was a spring collapse in the bed. 2 second pause and then a definite swaying from side to side in the room. Not enough to dislodge any items or even make me jump of the bed (was ready though!). Whole episode lasted around 10 seconds.
  • Yangon, Dagon Tsp - Gentle shake on the 7th floor
  • Yangon - can feel the earth shaking vibration
  • Kamayut Township - All people in room felt shaking. Water in glasses swaying. We are in a single unit family dwelling, second floor. No noise, but unmistakable tremble. I have felt many earthquakes in the past. This was very mild, but noticeable.
  • 4th floor condo - Loud boom followed by initial large sway of building slowly dissipating over 5 seconds. No damage
  • Strand Road, Ahlone Tsp. Yangon - Twice we felt strong shaking and it lasted about 5 seconds per time while sitting on the 3rd floor of 6 storeyed building.. The entrance door was open itself due to the shake. TV stand, table were shaking too..
  • Dagon Ts - I was on 9th floor, i saw swinging ceiling fan and felt shaking for 2 seconds
  • Yangon, Hlaing Tharyan - I felt the house moved, it was more like feeling a shock wave, than a shake. I was on the 1st floor, but the person on the ground floor and some friends who were outside the house did not feel it at all. It only lasted a couple of seconds.
  • Yangon(5th floor ) apartment - I was sitting on my couch, and the couch stated to move, (forward and backward)this lasted about 2-5seconds . My husband was in the kitchen , he noticed the mesh door was rattling we both wondered if this was an earthquake.... No noise just a mild shake.....
  • Myaynigone Tws, Yangon - Was sitting, reading, and I noticed that we'd had an earthquake.
  • Hlaingtharyar - I felt one strong shake or lurch. It just felt like my house was pushed forward and then it stopped. Two seconds max.
  • Kamaryut Township, Yangon - 11th floor apartment, Walls began to wobble and hanging fixtures began to sway.
  • 12th Fl Condo Yangon - a boom then discernable building swaying for 7-10secs
  • Downtown Yangon - I felt a rapid rolling jolt accompanied by a sudden rumble. It was not severe but the movement was enough to feel like it lifted me momentarily from the couch on which I was sitting. It was over within a second or two. Disconcerting but not terrifying.
  • Shwe Yone May, Yankin Tsp - I was sitting on the floor of our apartment. We live in the 2nd storey of a 6 storey building. Felt like somebody had bounced on the floor to make it shake a bit, not enough to make things rattle but definitely rattled my nerves enough to run to the balcony to see if others had noticed it too.

    MMI IV (Light shaking) ?
    People :
    Generally noticed indoors but not outside. Light sleepers may be awakened. Vibration may be likened to the passing of heavy traffic, or to the jolt of a heavy object falling or striking the building.
    Fittings :
    Doors and windows rattle. Glassware and crockery rattle. Liquids in open vessels may be slightly disturbed. Standing motorcars may rock.
    Structures :
    Walls and frames of buildings, and partitions and suspended ceilings in commercial buildings, may be heard to creak.
    MMI V (Moderate shaking) ?
    People :
    Generally felt outside, and by almost everyone indoors. Most sleepers awakened. A few people alarmed.
    Fittings :
    Small unstable objects are displaced or upset. Some glassware and crockery may be broken. Hanging pictures knock against the wall. Open doors may swing. Cupboard doors secured by magnetic catches may open. Pendulum clocks stop, start, or change rate.
    Structures :
    Some large display windows cracked. A few earthenware toilet fixtures cracked.
    MMI VI (Strong shaking) ?
    People Felt by all. People and animals alarmed. Many run outside. Difficulty experienced in walking steadily.
    Fittings :
    Objects fall from shelves. Pictures fall from walls. Some furniture moved on smooth floors, some unsecured free-standing fireplaces moved. Glassware and crockery broken. Very unstable furniture overturned. Small church and school bells ring. Appliances move on bench or table tops. Filing cabinets or "easy glide" drawers may open (or shut).
    Structures :
    Slight damage to buildings with low standard. Some stucco or cement plaster falls. Large display windows broken. Damage to a few weak domestic chimneys, some may fall.
    Environment :
    Trees and bushes shake, or are heard to rustle. Loose material may be dislodged from sloping ground, e.g. existing slides, talus slopes, shingle slides.
    MMI VII (Very strong shaking) ?
    People
    General alarm. Difficulty experienced in standing. Noticed by motorcar drivers who may stop.
    Fittings :
    Large bells ring. Furniture moves on smooth floors, may move on carpeted floors. Substantial damage to fragile contents of buildings.
    Structures :
    Unreinforced stone and brick walls cracked. Low standard buildings cracked with some minor masonry falls. A few instances of damage to buildings of ordinary workmanship. Unbraced parapets, unbraced brick gables, and architectural ornaments fall. Roofing tiles, especially ridge tiles may be dislodged. Many unreinforced domestic chimneys damaged, often falling from roof-line. Water tanks Type I burst. A few instances of damage to brick veneers and plaster or cement-based linings. Unrestrained water cylinders (hot-water cylinders) may move and leak. Some common windows cracked. Suspended ceilings damaged.
    Environment :
    Water made turbid by stirred up mud. Small slides such as falls of sand and gravel banks, and small rock-falls from steep slopes and cuttings. Instances of settlement of unconsolidated or wet, or weak soils. Some fine cracks appear in sloping ground. A few instances of liquefaction (i.e. small water and sand ejections).
    MMI VIII (Severe shaking) ?
    People Alarm may approach panic. Steering of motorcars greatly affected. Structures : Low standard buildings heavily damaged, some collapse. ordinary workmanship buildings damaged, some with partial collapse. Reinforced masonry or concrete buildings damaged in some cases. A few instances of damage to buildings and bridges designed and built to resist earthquakes. Monuments and pre-1976 elevated tanks and factory stacks twisted or brought down. Some pre-1965 infill masonry panels damaged. A few post-1980 brick veneers damaged. Decayed timber piles of houses damaged. Houses not secured to foundations may move. Most unreinforced domestic chimneys damaged, some below roof-line, many brought down. Environment : Cracks appear on steep slopes and in wet ground. Small to moderate slides in roadside cuttings and unsupported excavations. Small water and sand ejections and localized lateral spreading adjacent to streams, canals, lakes, etc.
    MMI IX (Violent shaking) ?
    Structures Many low standard buildings destroyed. Ordinary workmanship buildings heavily damaged, some collapse. Reinforced masonry or concrete buildings damaged, some with partial collapse. Buildings and bridges designed and built to resist earthquakes damaged in some cases, some with flexible frames seriously damaged. Damage or permanent distortion to some buildings and bridges, designed and built to normal use standards. Houses not secured to foundations shifted off. Brick veneers fall and expose frames. Environment : Cracking of ground conspicuous. Landsliding general on steep slopes. Liquefaction effects intensified and more widespread, with large lateral spreading and flow sliding adjacent to streams, canals, lakes, etc.
