Another earthquake in Timpson, Texas

Update Jan. 26 th: There are reports of minor damage from Timpson, Texas. At least one chimney has collapsed in this town. Besides, there were more damage inside the houses, as reportet earlier. Nobody was injured.

Update : some people report broken dishes and other objects who fell from shelves.
Our advise : This is not the first earthquake in the area and will probably not be the last one (aftershocks) and people should fix or at least protect everything which can fall. Many severe accidents occur with fallen objects. During the Christchurch, New Zealand, earthquake, a baby was killed when a tv set did fall on her buggy. Be prepared is the slogan ER repeats all the time all over the world.

A M4.1 struck Timpson, Texas shortly after midnight.
Geofon and EMSC, both European seismological agencies, are reporting M4.5 Magnitude. As USGS has most instruments close to the epicenter, we believe USGS has it right.
Following the reports we have received people experienced serious shaking.
The shaking lasted also longer than the other earthquakes experienced in Timpson before.
Hard to say whether this has to be called an aftershock or a new mainshock, in fact they are all simply earthquakes.
An hypocenter (breaking point in the earth) of only 5 km is extremely shallow and feels like it happens almost under your house if you live above it.
The earthquake will have been felt far beyond Timpson, but only as a weak to very weak shaking.
ER expects that this earthquake will generate only minor damage like cracks in walls, fallen objects etc.
Minor aftershocks may be expected.

  • 2336 FM 1970 N Timpson, Tx 75975 - Around 1 AM the whole house suddenly started shaking, glass was rattling, a few things fell off the shelves and broke.

  • Nacogdoches - Felt the building shake, everything in the room was shaking
  • New Boston, Texas - I was outside lying on the ground under my car changing the oil when I felt the ground trembling under me. it felt like the rumble of loud thunder in the distance and lasted about 15 seconds. Wow!!! What an experience!!! Crossing that one off my bucket list!!!
  • Lake murvall in Gary ,tx - Was woke by lamps, bed was moving, shaking upstairs & down. No damage, just scary.
  • Nacogdoches, Stephen F. Austin - While I was lying still in my bed (my bed is high off the ground), it started to sway in different directions. It didn't feel as strong as the last earthquake in 2012.
  • Arcadia, Texas - Old farm house on blocks shook pretty good. Awakened me immediately. Didn't displace pictures and stove top like the last "big" one but felt about the same. Seemed to last5-10 seconds.
  • Joaquin, TX - The shaking woke me from sleep with the bed, fan, etc. all moving.
  • Timpson on FM 947 (6 miles ENE) - I was going to bed and right at 1am by my clock the shaking started, it rocked and rolled for at the most 20 seconds and gently abated.
  • Folsum Chapel Rd - The shaking woke me up. I could hear the trees in my backyard. The trees sound like they were about to snap and fall onto the house. The house seemed to sway as well.
  • Tenaha,TX - Dogs whining woke me up before the shaking started, went to see what was up with them when the house started shaking. Some pictures fell from walls, things off of upper shelves fell & broke.
  • Martinsville (20 miles so.) - Our dog, not allowed upstairs, came up & stood next to bed. I slept through it but she didn't.
  • Fm 699 Center TX - Whole house shaking, windows rattling. Felt like house shifted.
  • .25 miles from epicenter - Around the corner from my house, was shaking guns inside 800lb+ gunsafe to the point that you heard metal hitting metal. Have not examined for structural damage. House on pier and beam. Last one cracked my ceramic tile floor from one end of kitchen to the other , popped nails down from sheet rock on ceiling also cracked sheet rock above bedroom door from door frame to the ceiling.
  • 377 Shoreline Drive, Timpson TX 75975 - Ive been hearing sonic booms for the past week or so, when it hit last night it was scary it broke glasses and was shaking the house very hard. It lasted longer than others. What is going on?? It's not a normal thing to have earthquakes here! Well besides the 8 we have experienced in the past couple of years!?

  • 104 bradshaw st.;center,tx 75935 - Floor shaking,chair shaking with me in it,exterior walls popping,liquid in bottles sloshing around roof felt like it was lifting off,sounded like a strong wind was hitting house.
  • center tx - Felt it in the Tyson foods processing plant in Center Tx.
  • 147 CR 1431 Center, TX - Sounded like a train, I could feel the bed swaying, windows rattled and my chimes (in the house) were clinking together. Lasted a good while
  • Hwy 7 east in James community - I awoke to the bed shaking back and forth. Mirror on dresser shaking, and chandlier in living area was swaying back and forth. Was shocked to have this happening again, this was the third one we felt.
  • Hwy 7, 3.5 miles SW of Center, TX - Woke to 33' travel trailer shaking really strong, dogs barking, lights being turned on, very unusual, and unsettling.

    Small unstable objects are displaced or upset. Some glassware and crockery may be broken. Hanging pictures knock against the wall. Open doors may swing. Cupboard doors secured by magnetic catches may open. Pendulum clocks stop, start, or change rate.
    Structures :
    Some large display windows cracked. A few earthenware toilet fixtures cracked.
    MMI VI (Strong shaking) ?
    People Felt by all. People and animals alarmed. Many run outside. Difficulty experienced in walking steadily.
    Fittings :
    Objects fall from shelves. Pictures fall from walls. Some furniture moved on smooth floors, some unsecured free-standing fireplaces moved. Glassware and crockery broken. Very unstable furniture overturned. Small church and school bells ring. Appliances move on bench or table tops. Filing cabinets or "easy glide" drawers may open (or shut).
    Structures :
    Slight damage to buildings with low standard. Some stucco or cement plaster falls. Large display windows broken. Damage to a few weak domestic chimneys, some may fall.
    Environment :
    Trees and bushes shake, or are heard to rustle. Loose material may be dislodged from sloping ground, e.g. existing slides, talus slopes, shingle slides.
    MMI VII (Very strong shaking) ?
    People
    General alarm. Difficulty experienced in standing. Noticed by motorcar drivers who may stop.
    Fittings :
    Large bells ring. Furniture moves on smooth floors, may move on carpeted floors. Substantial damage to fragile contents of buildings.
    Structures :
    Unreinforced stone and brick walls cracked. Low standard buildings cracked with some minor masonry falls. A few instances of damage to buildings of ordinary workmanship. Unbraced parapets, unbraced brick gables, and architectural ornaments fall. Roofing tiles, especially ridge tiles may be dislodged. Many unreinforced domestic chimneys damaged, often falling from roof-line. Water tanks Type I burst. A few instances of damage to brick veneers and plaster or cement-based linings. Unrestrained water cylinders (hot-water cylinders) may move and leak. Some common windows cracked. Suspended ceilings damaged.
    Environment :
    Water made turbid by stirred up mud. Small slides such as falls of sand and gravel banks, and small rock-falls from steep slopes and cuttings. Instances of settlement of unconsolidated or wet, or weak soils. Some fine cracks appear in sloping ground. A few instances of liquefaction (i.e. small water and sand ejections).
    MMI VIII (Severe shaking) ?
    People Alarm may approach panic. Steering of motorcars greatly affected. Structures : Low standard buildings heavily damaged, some collapse. ordinary workmanship buildings damaged, some with partial collapse. Reinforced masonry or concrete buildings damaged in some cases. A few instances of damage to buildings and bridges designed and built to resist earthquakes. Monuments and pre-1976 elevated tanks and factory stacks twisted or brought down. Some pre-1965 infill masonry panels damaged. A few post-1980 brick veneers damaged. Decayed timber piles of houses damaged. Houses not secured to foundations may move. Most unreinforced domestic chimneys damaged, some below roof-line, many brought down. Environment : Cracks appear on steep slopes and in wet ground. Small to moderate slides in roadside cuttings and unsupported excavations. Small water and sand ejections and localized lateral spreading adjacent to streams, canals, lakes, etc.
    MMI IX (Violent shaking) ?
    Structures Many low standard buildings destroyed. Ordinary workmanship buildings heavily damaged, some collapse. Reinforced masonry or concrete buildings damaged, some with partial collapse. Buildings and bridges designed and built to resist earthquakes damaged in some cases, some with flexible frames seriously damaged. Damage or permanent distortion to some buildings and bridges, designed and built to normal use standards. Houses not secured to foundations shifted off. Brick veneers fall and expose frames. Environment : Cracking of ground conspicuous. Landsliding general on steep slopes. Liquefaction effects intensified and more widespread, with large lateral spreading and flow sliding adjacent to streams, canals, lakes, etc.
