A very strange earthquake has hit Indonesia.
A significant difference of over 70km exists in between the epicenters of BMKG and the USGS. At this point it seems as though the USGS fault solution is correct.
Update Jan. 22 19.00 UTC: Recent news from Indonesia give a total number of 15 injured persons from this quake. 5 of them were seriously injured. All of them are from Mane district close to the epicenter. There are no further fatalities so far.
Apriyadi, from Aceh Disaster Management Agency (BPBA) said a nine-year-old girl was killed in the Pidie district after a cabinet in the bedroom fell on her when the quake struck. (Tutia Rahmi was the name of the girl)
Earthquake-report.com reminds users that they should go out and buy a couple of screws and a small metal L-plate and to tie furniture into walls. Over 5% of earthquake deaths from shaking occur from non-structural causes, and in smaller earthquakes (intensity VI-VII) are the main source of deaths along with heart attacks and panic deaths.
In developed countries with low-moderate seismic risk, this should be mandatory!
Seven people were injured and four of them with serious injuries, because of collapsed walls and other elements.
In Pidie, the earthquake also resulted in a number of damaged houses and mosques. The condition of the worst damage occurred in the District Mane, Tangse, and Geumpang, Pidie. This corresponds also to the USGS epicenter.
It is estimated that there are some additional residents who were injured due to exposure to collapsing walls and furniture. Unconfirmed reports of two extra deaths have also occurred.
This earthquake corresponds to a CATDAT Red event. This is the first of 2013.

Shaking map of the M6.0 Northern Sumatra earthquake of January 21/22 2013
Text written in our daily overview of January 21 after the earthquake.
Important Update Jan. 2207:16 UTC : The good news we expected to confirm today is unfortunately bad news. A 9 year old was crushed by the rumble of her house and died. 7 other people were injured. Tens of houses collapsed and a lot of people have been moved to temporary shelters as their houses were damaged. A mosk did also collapsed.
An aftershock measuring M5.1 at a depth of only 12 km occurred later but normally the people must have been living on the street then.
As the girl was from Pidie which is located at the edge of the VII MMI intensity map from USGS (upper map), we believe that the USGS data may have been better this time.
Local BMKG reports however M6.0 at a depth of 84 km (vs 37 km USGS)
Epicenter 33km SSW of Reuleuet following USGS preliminary reports
Lets hope that the BMKG depth of the earthquake is right as otherwise damage can be expected.
84 km depth means only a light to very weak shaking but in a very wide radius.
The earthquake occurred at 05:47 local time.
ER considers BMKG as a very good seismological agency and hopes that BMKG is right with the below map.
