Moderate shallow earthquake below the center of Taiwan
All reporting agencies are talking about a very shallow depth of 4 to 6 km.
USGS is talking only about a weak shaking, but we have received reports of light to moderate shaking (see below).
Most of the Taiwanese earthquakes are happening just off the coast, but occasionally a below the island earthquake shakes the population. Also in this case.
Luckily the epicenter is below the Yushan National Park, a park with the highest peak of the island, Siouguluan Mountain, towering at 3860 m above sea level! Epicenter is approx. 10 km from the summit.
We are not sure at all whether no damage has been inflicted.
The earthquake occurred 3 minutes after midnight local time.
36km (22mi) SSE of Lugu, Taiwan
49km (30mi) ESE of Douliu, Taiwan
51km (32mi) E of Jiayi Shi, Taiwan
55km (34mi) S of Buli, Taiwan
Update : CWA, the Taiwan seismological bureau reports a Magnitude of Ml 5.4 at a depth of only 5.7 km. The epicenter is however in a wilderness area at several tens of km from nearby cities. Max. intensity has been reported as 4 in Chiayi county. The CWA intensity scale is more or less the same than the Japan JMA scale. In the case of Japan, we consider 5+ as a potentially dangerous earthquake. Let’s hope that CWA is right here. We will follow up regional reports and will let you know if we find some damage.

Useful information to read this daily earthquake list
This earthquake list covers important earthquakes in the world. If a more detailed page is present, the earthquake line will be linked to the detailed page. The multi-source approach has been setup to compare values as seismology is not an exact science and needs a lot of calculations. The reference for the time zone is UTC (Coordinated Universal Time, also called GMT). Color explanation if we add some details above the list : green color = NOT dangerous for damage or injuries, orange color = MODERATE risk for damage or injuries, red color = CONSIDERABLE risk for damage or injuries
QuakeSOS+ and QuakeSOS free are iPhone applications developed by Armand Vervaeck, the founder of Earthquake Report. The Application simplifies immediate group communication to friends and family members (with your exact GPS location) and is feeding the users with Earthquake Report news. The 0.99 US$ QuakeSOS+ version will support the activities of SOS Earthquakes.
