Moderate earthquake in Central Peru
Magnitude 4.7 at a depth of  47 km.
This earthquake is harmless.
25km (16mi) SSW of San Vicente de Canete, Peru and 148 km from Lima, Peru

Moderate aftershock in Northern Chile
Ab aftershock with a preliminary Magnitude of M5.1 struck the  La Higuera area in Northern Chile.
This earthquake will also be felt in Southern Peru.
Universidad de Chile, Santiago reports a Magnitude of 5.2 at a depth of 56 km = harmless

Strong earthquake in the Guerrero area, Mexico
Preliminary Magnitude M5.7 at a depth of 20 km (has to be confirmed)
9km E of Tlalchapa, Mexico
This is one of the many aftershocks of the massive earthquake earlier this year.

Update : Based on the damage which struck the same area during the seriously higher Magnitude mainshock, we do not think that this earthquake will generate serious damage – Let us hope that our expectation is the right one.
Important update 09:42 UTC : USGS has now released new numbers which are far more favourable than the first ones. Magnitude reamains 6.0 but the depth of the hypocenter is now reported at 61 km. The deper the hypocenter, the less chance on damage.
Disadvantage of the greater depth is that the earthquake will be felt in a far wider area, 1000+ km
Update 10:02 UTC : If the image below is right, we do not have to be scared for damage. A MMI IV light shaking will certainly be harmless.

  • Cuernavaca, Morelos MEX - Light shaking
  • Mexico City - We were sleeping and we felt shaking. It was strong enough to wake us up. Maybe around 10 seconds.
  • Cuautitlan-Izcalli - Felt two separate tremors between 3:15 - 3:20AM Nov 15, 2012
  • Mexico City - Usually never wake me up, this time it did and the building shook for a while.,
  • Mexico City - Around 3:20 or a little after. Bed shaking for a while.
  • Mexico City - Was deep asleep..was woken up by severe shaking..fuck everything was shaking..we are still up with shock
  • Mexico City - Me too. About 10 seconds of shakes and rumbles
  • Cuautitlan Izcalli - Tremor at around 3:25am
  • Mexico City - Woke from sleep because of the shaking and heard a slight creaking of walls at about 3:22. It lasted about 15 seconds
  • Mexico DF - shaking was at least for 1.5 minutes or more
  • Mexico city - Apartment swaying side to side. Windows creaking
  • DF - Movimiento ondulante pero muy largo sin sonido.
  • Mexico city - I felt it it woke me up from heavy sleep
  • Chilpancingo de los bravos, gro - This woke both my husband and I right from sleep. It lsated a very long time it seems, and we could hear things from the nearby homes falling, as well as our own three story home creak. Felt more swaying than shaking. Our two children, 1 and 3, did not wake from the experience.
  • Puebla city - Light, but everybody woke up at my apartment.
  • Metepec, México - I also felt it... I woke up!
  • Cd de México - El temblor fue a las 3:20, movimientos circulares, bastante intenso a mi parecer, tardo aprox 30 seg o más
  • DF - Tomando segunda botella de vino, y hablando sobre la,inmortalidad del cangrejo, se movió todo el departamento. Ascensor con llave, puerta de emergencia con candado. Sentadas en el suelo esperando que termine. Duro más de un minuto.
  • Malinalco, Estado de mexico - The shaking woke us up, lasted about 10-15 seconds
  • Mexico City - Aquí en plaza Carso se sintio en el 5o Piso, y si duro más de un minuto.
  • Toluca Mexico - Me despertó el ruido de los muebles y un sonido que venia de abajo de la tierra, el mareo fue bastante y se sintió mas fuerte que 6.0
  • Mexico City - Woke me up from a deep sleep.
  • Toluca Mexico - Woke me out of a dead sleep at 3:30am ish...I was on the 3rd flr of my hotel. 1st earthquake exp. for me it was a little scary
  • Toluca - It woke me up at around 3:23 a.m. My bed was shaking and you could hear everything shifting.
  • Cuernavaca Mexico - Woke me from a dead sleep and i felt very strong shaking for about 10-15 seconds. Rattled windows and doors in the house. Very strong!
  • Mexico City - Ik lag te slapen en werd wakker door het schudden van mijn bed. Het duurde denk ik ongeveer 10/15 seconden. Daarna niks meer, gelukkig.
  • Mexico City - The shaking started soft but then it got stronger. The monitor of my computer started to sway back and forth and also the house started to creak.
  • Mexico City - I was asleep in a Mexico City hotel and woke up suddenly, I heard squeaking, the bed was moving and drapes well. I got up, not wearing pajamas and put on pants and went out into the hall to take the stairs and down ... in that calmed down, talked to the front desk and they said everything was fine ...
  • Tepoztlan Morelos - The shaking woke me up at 3.21am from a deep sleep.The windows were rattling, house was shaking, bed was moving for about 20-25 secs.No damage but the shaking was pretty strong. The strongest earthquake felt that I felt here for over 7-8 years.
  • Mexico City - was woken at 3.20am, felt like the room was moving and my bed was shaking
  • Taxco Guerrero - Woke our family out of a deep sleep. The windows were loudly rattling and the floor shaking.
  • DF - Woke up to bed vibrating around 3:20. Lasted just briefly.
  • Mexico City - It was enough to wake me from a sound sleep last night...by the time I awoke the shaking was pretty intense, but let up about 20 seconds later.
  • Acapulco - Woke my wife daughter and i up.Rumble noise about 10 secs after awakening
  • Mexico City - Short but strong jolt
  • Mexico City,Tlatelolco - I live in Mexico City,Tlatelolco. Fisrt I felt as if the building had "jumped" a little bit and then the movement began. Because of the time when it happened most of the people were already sleeping but the quake awoke many neighbours. Power and services remained working but many people was very frightened. Most part of the quake alarms did not work!
  • Mexico City - Thought hubby was shaking the bed just to annoy me!
  • Toluca - I woke up in the bed, I thought my kids are making jokes and shaking the bed, it was shaking strong

    MMI II (Very weak shaking) ?
    People :
    Felt by persons at rest, on upper floors or favorably placed.
    MMI III (Weak shaking) ?
    People :
    Felt indoors; hanging objects may swing, vibration similar to passing of light trucks, duration may be estimated, may not be recognized as an earthquake.
    MMI IV (Light shaking) ?
    People :
    Generally noticed indoors but not outside. Light sleepers may be awakened. Vibration may be likened to the passing of heavy traffic, or to the jolt of a heavy object falling or striking the building.
    Fittings :
    Doors and windows rattle. Glassware and crockery rattle. Liquids in open vessels may be slightly disturbed. Standing motorcars may rock.
    Structures :
    Walls and frames of buildings, and partitions and suspended ceilings in commercial buildings, may be heard to creak.
    MMI V (Moderate shaking) ?
    People :
    Generally felt outside, and by almost everyone indoors. Most sleepers awakened. A few people alarmed.
    Fittings :
    Small unstable objects are displaced or upset. Some glassware and crockery may be broken. Hanging pictures knock against the wall. Open doors may swing. Cupboard doors secured by magnetic catches may open. Pendulum clocks stop, start, or change rate.
    Structures :
    Some large display windows cracked. A few earthenware toilet fixtures cracked.
    MMI VI (Strong shaking) ?
    People Felt by all. People and animals alarmed. Many run outside. Difficulty experienced in walking steadily.
    Fittings :
    Objects fall from shelves. Pictures fall from walls. Some furniture moved on smooth floors, some unsecured free-standing fireplaces moved. Glassware and crockery broken. Very unstable furniture overturned. Small church and school bells ring. Appliances move on bench or table tops. Filing cabinets or "easy glide" drawers may open (or shut).
    Structures :
    Slight damage to buildings with low standard. Some stucco or cement plaster falls. Large display windows broken. Damage to a few weak domestic chimneys, some may fall.
    Environment :
    Trees and bushes shake, or are heard to rustle. Loose material may be dislodged from sloping ground, e.g. existing slides, talus slopes, shingle slides.
    MMI VII (Very strong shaking) ?
    People
    General alarm. Difficulty experienced in standing. Noticed by motorcar drivers who may stop.
    Fittings :
    Large bells ring. Furniture moves on smooth floors, may move on carpeted floors. Substantial damage to fragile contents of buildings.
    Structures :
    Unreinforced stone and brick walls cracked. Low standard buildings cracked with some minor masonry falls. A few instances of damage to buildings of ordinary workmanship. Unbraced parapets, unbraced brick gables, and architectural ornaments fall. Roofing tiles, especially ridge tiles may be dislodged. Many unreinforced domestic chimneys damaged, often falling from roof-line. Water tanks Type I burst. A few instances of damage to brick veneers and plaster or cement-based linings. Unrestrained water cylinders (hot-water cylinders) may move and leak. Some common windows cracked. Suspended ceilings damaged.
    Environment :
    Water made turbid by stirred up mud. Small slides such as falls of sand and gravel banks, and small rock-falls from steep slopes and cuttings. Instances of settlement of unconsolidated or wet, or weak soils. Some fine cracks appear in sloping ground. A few instances of liquefaction (i.e. small water and sand ejections).
    MMI VIII (Severe shaking) ?
    People Alarm may approach panic. Steering of motorcars greatly affected. Structures : Low standard buildings heavily damaged, some collapse. ordinary workmanship buildings damaged, some with partial collapse. Reinforced masonry or concrete buildings damaged in some cases. A few instances of damage to buildings and bridges designed and built to resist earthquakes. Monuments and pre-1976 elevated tanks and factory stacks twisted or brought down. Some pre-1965 infill masonry panels damaged. A few post-1980 brick veneers damaged. Decayed timber piles of houses damaged. Houses not secured to foundations may move. Most unreinforced domestic chimneys damaged, some below roof-line, many brought down. Environment : Cracks appear on steep slopes and in wet ground. Small to moderate slides in roadside cuttings and unsupported excavations. Small water and sand ejections and localized lateral spreading adjacent to streams, canals, lakes, etc.
    MMI IX (Violent shaking) ?
    Structures Many low standard buildings destroyed. Ordinary workmanship buildings heavily damaged, some collapse. Reinforced masonry or concrete buildings damaged, some with partial collapse. Buildings and bridges designed and built to resist earthquakes damaged in some cases, some with flexible frames seriously damaged. Damage or permanent distortion to some buildings and bridges, designed and built to normal use standards. Houses not secured to foundations shifted off. Brick veneers fall and expose frames. Environment : Cracking of ground conspicuous. Landsliding general on steep slopes. Liquefaction effects intensified and more widespread, with large lateral spreading and flow sliding adjacent to streams, canals, lakes, etc.
