Very strong  dangerous aftershock in Guatemala

Based on the number of visitors in our site at the moment, we do think that a very strong earthquake did occur in Central America
We have preliminary date showing a Magnitude of M6.2 at a depth of 31 km.
We do fear again for unstable houses and constructions in the already earlier hit areas inside the country.

Update : We do not think that this earthquake will generate a tsunami as the epicenter area was in the same area than the mainshock a couple of days ago and as the mainshock did not generate big tides neither.
Update 22:34 UTC : as could be expected, the earthquake was felt all over the country as well as in neighbouring Mexico
- Max. expected shaking by USGS : MMI VI Max. reported shaking at USGS : MMI IV (light shaking)
- These kind of aftershocks will probably continue for quite some time; will gradually become weaker with occasionally now and then a bigger bump like the one we just experienced.
Update 22:54 UTC : at least 15 million people felt the earthquake in Mexico, Nicaragua and Guatemala
- CONRED the Guatemalan relief and rescue service just held a press conference in their offices when the earthquake struck. The premises were immediately evacuated
Update 22:59 UTC : This aftershock was not so harmless as we thought.
- In zone 5 of San Marcos a wall collapsed and a woman was slightly injured.
- 3 people were found under debris, they have been transported to the hospital.
- A bus crashed (turned around) and 10 people were slightly injured, they are in a hospital now.
Update 23:07 UTC : USGS has revised the earthquake data and reports now a Magnitude of 6.5 at a depth of 30 km.  On the basis of these new numbers we can conclude that 183000 people have experienced a strong shaking and 1.42 million a moderate MMI V shaking
Update 23:13 UTC : – Power went down in some of the earlier hit areas
- The President of Guatemala has suspended his upcoming trip to Spain
ER thinks that the Guatemalan people, Conred, politicians and certainly also the President did a great job coping with this disaster. The president was at the scene coordinating actions from the very beginning. What a difference with the earthquake in Myanmar.
Update 23:59 UTC:  - 20 houses are no longer habitable
- 2 families have been evacuated
- a minor was injured by this aftershock
- Based on the new data (M6.5 at 30 km)  USGS has recalculated the intensities - 5000 people will have felt a very strong MMI VII shaking - 434000 people a  strong MMIVI shaking and  more than 2 million a moderate shaking”

  • Myanmar - much smaller and shorter duration than the one @8 15 AM
  • Pakokku, Magway, Myanmar - While I am in bed, my bedroom wall shaking. I thinks it headache, but no more and more shaking. I wakeup and go outside, it earthquake shaking. It's just 2 or 3 minutes. Then all normal.

  • Mandalay - 1-2 minutes strong shaking. People had nother experienced this strong before
  • Mandalay - Got awake on 5th floor of my hotel in the centre of Mandalay. Shaking lasted perhaps half minute to one minute. Guests were running to the stairs when shaking tapered. Some week shakings the following half hour afterwards.

  • Bangkok, Thailand - On upper floor of apartment building, blinds and curtains swinging. Lasted about 2 minutes.

  • Bangkok - I live in a high rise building on the 30th floor. The shake was very noticabe and seemed to have last longer than previous ones. My cat felt it a few seconds before it started. The windows shields moved vigorously and there were slight noises from the ceiling but nothing fell.

  • Bangkok - Bangkok, 12th floor, 08.20: Water in the glass, mobile, my head all swirled for about 30sec-2mins. I've lived here for about 8 years, experienced some light shakes, but never felt nothing like this.
  • Bangkok - In south Bangkok on the 17th floor. There was some mild vibration for 15 to 20 seconds but nothing that made anything move on shelving. Some buildings were evacuated in other parts of Bangkok.
  • Bangkok - shaked long time probably for 5 mins. long wave.
  • Bangkok - On the 14th floor south of Sathorn Road. Windows rattled and there was light shaking but no damage.
  • Bangkok - On 27th floor building swayed for about 30 seconds. Had to sit down. Swimming pool on the 4th floor was sloshing back and forth. People on 2nd flor didnt notice a thing.
  • Bangkok - Staying at Pullman King Power. I was seating on me bed when I felt dizzy. Looking at the window, I saw it swinging for 20 seconds. It is the first time I face this situation: once you have understood what is going on you realize there is nothing you can do. Calmly I went down, using the elevator...very impressive experience. Hope consequences will not be too bad for people in Myanmar.
  • Singapore - sudden shake for a few seconds
  • Chiang Mai - I had just gotten up and was walking into the kitchen and started noticing my doors to the shower, the bathroom and my bedroom swinging back and forth and then the building started swaying quite a bit and lasted for about a minute. Got a bit woozy on the 7th floor of an 8 story building.

    Felt by persons at rest, on upper floors or favorably placed.
    MMI III (Weak shaking) ?
    People :
    Felt indoors; hanging objects may swing, vibration similar to passing of light trucks, duration may be estimated, may not be recognized as an earthquake.
    MMI IV (Light shaking) ?
    People :
    Generally noticed indoors but not outside. Light sleepers may be awakened. Vibration may be likened to the passing of heavy traffic, or to the jolt of a heavy object falling or striking the building.
    Fittings :
    Doors and windows rattle. Glassware and crockery rattle. Liquids in open vessels may be slightly disturbed. Standing motorcars may rock.
    Structures :
    Walls and frames of buildings, and partitions and suspended ceilings in commercial buildings, may be heard to creak.
    MMI V (Moderate shaking) ?
    People :
    Generally felt outside, and by almost everyone indoors. Most sleepers awakened. A few people alarmed.
    Fittings :
    Small unstable objects are displaced or upset. Some glassware and crockery may be broken. Hanging pictures knock against the wall. Open doors may swing. Cupboard doors secured by magnetic catches may open. Pendulum clocks stop, start, or change rate.
    Structures :
    Some large display windows cracked. A few earthenware toilet fixtures cracked.
    MMI VI (Strong shaking) ?
    People Felt by all. People and animals alarmed. Many run outside. Difficulty experienced in walking steadily.
    Fittings :
    Objects fall from shelves. Pictures fall from walls. Some furniture moved on smooth floors, some unsecured free-standing fireplaces moved. Glassware and crockery broken. Very unstable furniture overturned. Small church and school bells ring. Appliances move on bench or table tops. Filing cabinets or "easy glide" drawers may open (or shut).
    Structures :
    Slight damage to buildings with low standard. Some stucco or cement plaster falls. Large display windows broken. Damage to a few weak domestic chimneys, some may fall.
    Environment :
    Trees and bushes shake, or are heard to rustle. Loose material may be dislodged from sloping ground, e.g. existing slides, talus slopes, shingle slides.
    MMI VII (Very strong shaking) ?
    People
    General alarm. Difficulty experienced in standing. Noticed by motorcar drivers who may stop.
    Fittings :
    Large bells ring. Furniture moves on smooth floors, may move on carpeted floors. Substantial damage to fragile contents of buildings.
    Structures :
    Unreinforced stone and brick walls cracked. Low standard buildings cracked with some minor masonry falls. A few instances of damage to buildings of ordinary workmanship. Unbraced parapets, unbraced brick gables, and architectural ornaments fall. Roofing tiles, especially ridge tiles may be dislodged. Many unreinforced domestic chimneys damaged, often falling from roof-line. Water tanks Type I burst. A few instances of damage to brick veneers and plaster or cement-based linings. Unrestrained water cylinders (hot-water cylinders) may move and leak. Some common windows cracked. Suspended ceilings damaged.
    Environment :
    Water made turbid by stirred up mud. Small slides such as falls of sand and gravel banks, and small rock-falls from steep slopes and cuttings. Instances of settlement of unconsolidated or wet, or weak soils. Some fine cracks appear in sloping ground. A few instances of liquefaction (i.e. small water and sand ejections).
    MMI VIII (Severe shaking) ?
    People Alarm may approach panic. Steering of motorcars greatly affected. Some pre-1965 infill masonry panels damaged. A few post-1980 brick veneers damaged. Decayed timber piles of houses damaged. Houses not secured to foundations may move. Most unreinforced domestic chimneys damaged, some below roof-line, many brought down. Environment : Cracks appear on steep slopes and in wet ground. Small to moderate slides in roadside cuttings and unsupported excavations. Small water and sand ejections and localized lateral spreading adjacent to streams, canals, lakes, etc.
