  • Aore island Vanuatu - We haven't had a good shake like this one for a few months. We heard it coming a few seconds before it hit. Lot of up and down type pushes instead of small shakes. Went for about 40 secs.

  • Ocean city Nj - Felt like a eumble Everyone ran outside. We all noticed on our street
  • East egg harbor township, Atlantic count - 10/20/12 11:04 am edt. 7-10 second trembler. Heard and felt.
  • Cape May, NJ - Felt a rumble that shook a mobile home at our campsite... we called someone 60 miles north of us in Manahawkin NJ and they felt the same thing in the house.
  • Galloway ni - There was a very loud rumbling. The house shook.
  • egg harbor township - Doors shaking lots of rumbling. Lasted less than 15 seconds
  • Cape May Court House NJ - boom and shaking around 11 AM followed by another boom about 5 or 6 min later.....freaky
  • Dennisville,NJ - Loud rumbling and felt it, lasted about 8 seconds, 10 mins later heard another not as loud and didnt feel it.
  • Vineland N.J. - The windows rattled and we heard a loud boom.
  • Northfield new jersey - Shaking and thunderous sound

  • Folsom NJ - It sounded like someone was trying to run into the back screen door, and shook the house....
  • Wildwood, NJ - I felt the rummbling and hear a very loud noise!

  • margate, nj - my third floor shook harder than any kind of hard wind and heard rumbling from outside
  • Ocean View, DE - Felt it here twice too.
  • Galloway - A WEIRED SOUND, WANT TO KNOW WHAT HAPPEN AND WHAT WAS IT?
  • 19970 - 2 short sonic like rumbles over a half hour time. Garage doors shook.
  • Little Egg Harbor - Whole house started shaking, outside sounded like a bomb with slight shaking.
  • Galloway nj - Heard loud rumbling and open windows were shaking around 1100
  • Toms river - Felt shaking in toms river
  • Galloway, NJ - In galloway NJ i heard the sound like bomb and then my house start shacking in like 10 sec
  • Cape May, NJ - Two short events, house shook
  • EHT NJ - I & other parents at our town tennis courts & soccer field all heard a loud rumbling. We thought it could be an earthquake but attributed it to the Nat'l Air Guard Base a few miles away...sometimes we hear fighter jets starting their engines...but I understand it was an earthquake...
  • Barnegat NJ/Ocean City NJ - My mom and I were in Barnegat, her outside me inside. I heard a rumbly sound and the walls and stuff on them shook as did the ground under where I was sitting on the staris; mom outside heard what she described as a low rumble like thunder but it's a clear blue sky, almost like a big construction vehicle pounding the ground; brother in Ocean City said he heard/felt it too. He is a man of few verbal details! Was around 11:15a.m.
  • Estell Manor, NJ 08319 - First heard a boom and then a a minute later heard a louder boom and the whole house started to shake...10 minutes later another boom (about 11:00 am 10/29/11
  • Little egg harbor NJ around 1104 am - I heard something loud than I saw the curtains swaying back amd fourth and felt my building moving for about 10-15 seconds.
  • wildwood, NJ - house shook and rumbled in shawcrest in wildwood nj

  • Galloway NJ - Doors and windows rattling, very loud boom
  • Atlantic City - We were on our boat fishing in great bay when we heard and felt what sounded more like a large bomb than a sonic boom or thunder. The boat shook for between 8 and 10 seconds during the incident, WE looked towards Atlantic City to see if there was anything burning but saw nothing?
  • 08234 - I am near the ANG base in EHT, NJ and am familiar with the common air traffic sounds, this was no sonic boom. This was an earth tremor that lasted 10 seconds. In other tremors i ahve =experienced the ground swayed, with this event the ground rumbled as if a freight train was moving slowly but very close (there are no trains near me).

  • Putnam, Ct. - was sitting at the computer when it started shaking from side to side and I held it so it wouldn't fall on the floor. First thought it was a helicopter getting ready to land in my back yard the sound was so loud. Moments later when I went downstairs to ask my husband if he felt any shaking or heard any noise when it then came on the tv news about an earth quake that happened moments ago in Maine. My husband never felt and shaking or heard the noise I did. He was downstairs and I was up.
  • Manchester, NJ - House shook for a few seconds... No activity at Lakehurst Naval Base at the time...
  • Hawthorne New Jersey - I was sitting on the couch near the basement door. The door started shaking as if someone was trying to open it from the other side.. Lasted about 10- 15 seconds. That was it though. I didn't hear a noise. I'm in northern NJ.
  • Fenwick Island, DE - 1mi from Ocean City, MD. The contained porch shook as if it was hurricane-force winds hitting it for a few secs (and I thought I imagined it cuz there was no wind).
  • Margate, NJ - While standing in kitchen this morning, heard loud explosion like sound... and floor started shaking. Felt like an earthquake right under my feet!
  • Morganville, nj 07751 - at approximately 11:10 a.m. 10/20/12 doors and floor in house started shaking lightly. i asked my spouse if he was doing something in the house, but he was cleaning dishes. saw something on msn so i decided to provide info to you about my experience today.
  • Berlin, Maryland - heard crash / boom sound earlier then about 5 or 10 minutes later heards second and this one came with shaking of house and objects
  • Wildwood Crest NJ - Audible rumble and vibrations at beach. Quick thunderous sound but too loud to be waves crashing
  • Cape May Court House - Sounded like small explosion at first, then house rumbled and window shook. A few seconds later, the same thing happened. Can't find any info about there being an earthquake
  • Dennisville, NJ - Rumbling/shaking lasted few seconds. My yr old daughter was nursing and stopped, sat up and looked around also wondering about the sound.
  • madera ca - felt the shake while watching tv.
  • Williamstown, NJ - I was lying in bed, heard a low rumble/vibration sound. Thought the dog jumped off the couch, but sound became louder & stronger, then the bed started shaking. Dog stopped & looked at me then jumped in bed next to me. About 45 min later, heard a small vibration sound & mirrors were shaking. Didn't feel anything that time. Started around 11ish.Cousin in Cape May & sister in Bethany, DE both felt it, but NOTHING ON NEWS THOUGH!!!
  • middletown, NJ - 11:00 AM 10/21/12
  • Ocean City, MD - We heard the boom and then felt the ground shaking in Ocean City around 11am on 20 October.
  • Northfield, NJ - 2 distinct shakes at about 11:05am, about 10 seconds and 5 respectively. House only shakes like this when wind gusts are well above 35mph. Winds were less than 10mph today. This was NOT a sonic boom from aircraft.
  • Galloway, NJ - I was sitting in my bed and felt/heard a loud rumbling sound and my apartment building was shaking
  • Northfield, NJ - There are apparently police authorities in the story http://nj1015.com/sonic-boom-shakes-south-jersey/ who claim this was a military activity over the ocean. I learned it affected residents in NJ, PA, DE, and PA. After some research I discovered that the same event occurred slightly after ours in the UK (they are about 4 hours ahead of us).     People :
    Felt by persons at rest, on upper floors or favorably placed.
    MMI III (Weak shaking) ?
    People :
    Felt indoors; hanging objects may swing, vibration similar to passing of light trucks, duration may be estimated, may not be recognized as an earthquake.
    MMI IV (Light shaking) ?
    People :
    Generally noticed indoors but not outside. Light sleepers may be awakened. Vibration may be likened to the passing of heavy traffic, or to the jolt of a heavy object falling or striking the building.
    Fittings :
    Doors and windows rattle. Glassware and crockery rattle. Liquids in open vessels may be slightly disturbed. Standing motorcars may rock.
    Structures :
    Walls and frames of buildings, and partitions and suspended ceilings in commercial buildings, may be heard to creak.
    MMI V (Moderate shaking) ?
    People :
    Generally felt outside, and by almost everyone indoors. Most sleepers awakened. A few people alarmed.
    Fittings :
    Small unstable objects are displaced or upset. Some glassware and crockery may be broken. Hanging pictures knock against the wall. Open doors may swing. Cupboard doors secured by magnetic catches may open. Pendulum clocks stop, start, or change rate.
    Structures :
    Some large display windows cracked. A few earthenware toilet fixtures cracked.
    MMI VI (Strong shaking) ?
    People Felt by all. People and animals alarmed. Many run outside. Difficulty experienced in walking steadily.
    Fittings :
    Objects fall from shelves. Pictures fall from walls. Some furniture moved on smooth floors, some unsecured free-standing fireplaces moved. Glassware and crockery broken. Very unstable furniture overturned. Small church and school bells ring. Appliances move on bench or table tops. Filing cabinets or "easy glide" drawers may open (or shut).
    Structures :
    Slight damage to buildings with low standard. Some stucco or cement plaster falls. Large display windows broken. Damage to a few weak domestic chimneys, some may fall.
    Environment :
    Trees and bushes shake, or are heard to rustle. Loose material may be dislodged from sloping ground, e.g. existing slides, talus slopes, shingle slides.
    MMI VII (Very strong shaking) ?
    People
    General alarm. Difficulty experienced in standing. Noticed by motorcar drivers who may stop.
    Fittings :
    Large bells ring. Furniture moves on smooth floors, may move on carpeted floors. Substantial damage to fragile contents of buildings.
    Structures :
    Unreinforced stone and brick walls cracked. Low standard buildings cracked with some minor masonry falls. A few instances of damage to buildings of ordinary workmanship. Unbraced parapets, unbraced brick gables, and architectural ornaments fall. Roofing tiles, especially ridge tiles may be dislodged. Many unreinforced domestic chimneys damaged, often falling from roof-line. Water tanks Type I burst. A few instances of damage to brick veneers and plaster or cement-based linings. Unrestrained water cylinders (hot-water cylinders) may move and leak. Some common windows cracked. Suspended ceilings damaged.
    Environment :
    Water made turbid by stirred up mud. Small slides such as falls of sand and gravel banks, and small rock-falls from steep slopes and cuttings. Instances of settlement of unconsolidated or wet, or weak soils. Some fine cracks appear in sloping ground. A few instances of liquefaction (i.e. small water and sand ejections).
    MMI VIII (Severe shaking) ?
    People Alarm may approach panic. Steering of motorcars greatly affected. Structures : Low standard buildings heavily damaged, some collapse. ordinary workmanship buildings damaged, some with partial collapse. Reinforced masonry or concrete buildings damaged in some cases. A few instances of damage to buildings and bridges designed and built to resist earthquakes. Monuments and pre-1976 elevated tanks and factory stacks twisted or brought down. Some pre-1965 infill masonry panels damaged. A few post-1980 brick veneers damaged. Decayed timber piles of houses damaged. Houses not secured to foundations may move. Most unreinforced domestic chimneys damaged, some below roof-line, many brought down. Environment : Cracks appear on steep slopes and in wet ground. Small to moderate slides in roadside cuttings and unsupported excavations. Small water and sand ejections and localized lateral spreading adjacent to streams, canals, lakes, etc.
    MMI IX (Violent shaking) ?
    Structures Many low standard buildings destroyed. Ordinary workmanship buildings heavily damaged, some collapse. Reinforced masonry or concrete buildings damaged, some with partial collapse. Buildings and bridges designed and built to resist earthquakes damaged in some cases, some with flexible frames seriously damaged. Damage or permanent distortion to some buildings and bridges, designed and built to normal use standards. Houses not secured to foundations shifted off. Brick veneers fall and expose frames. Environment : Cracking of ground conspicuous. Landsliding general on steep slopes. Liquefaction effects intensified and more widespread, with large lateral spreading and flow sliding adjacent to streams, canals, lakes, etc.

      10-20-12 Saturday morning while sleeping several times I heard a low frequency humming noise that lasted 10 to 15 seconds, and a few seconds after hearing it and then feeling it my house made settling noises. I heard this several times just this morning, but I’ve noticed this humming sound sometimes twice in the night, and almost always around I’m guessing 4am. It’s probably the heating and cooling of the earth. I live near Phoenix in Arizona.

      Thursday before bed the metal supports in my walls were chimming like a grand father clock 15 times or so. I video taped it. I have felt many quakes that didn’t show on the USGS map. just because their sensors didn’t pick it up doesn’t mean there wasn’t a quake. What is wrong with people that they completely ignore these severe quakes, fissures, sink holes and earth groaning noises?

      I LIVE IN DORCHESTER NJ, ABOUT 40 MILES OUTSIDE OF WILDWOOD,ATLANTIC CITY, AND PHILADELPHIA PA. BEING A FORMER PILOT AND EXPLOSIVES TECH. I WOULD SAY IT WAS NOT A SONIC BOOM, SOUNDED MORE LIKE AN EXPLOSION.
