3.9 Magnitude earthquake 9km from Beloeil, Canada.
The shallow depth of this earthquake, 9.9km, and the soil of this area made this earthquake felt a little stronger than usual and felt in a wider area. This earthquake, as people tell us, was felt for over 2 to 5 seconds and was followed by a huge noise. We are sure this earthquake although scary for the people living around, should not make damage or injuries.
Update: Both USGS and EMSC are giving a magnitude of 3.9 but Natural Resources Canada is giving a magnitude of 4.5… a big difference!
Update: The earthquake happened at 12:20a.m so a lot of people woke up, this “unusual” earthquake was also felt in the state of New York and Vermont, U.S.A.
-USGS shakemap shows a big area covered as a weak to light shaking (MMI III-IV), the earthquake could only cause light damage like cracked walls or chimneys around the epicenter.
Update: USGS tectonic summary shows: “earthquakes cause damage in the zone about once a decade. Smaller earthquakes are felt three or four times a year”.

M4.8 earthquake near Shiraz, Iran.

An earthquake has occurred at shallow depth around 30km away from the city of Shiraz. The local agencies have given it a M4.8, whereas USGS has measured M5.2. No damage has been reported. However, some panic did ensue.

  • 7432 N. E. 97 Terrace - Our animals were startled, jumped down and looked around. My husband and I felt it and heard it. The glassware rattled and my body felt the vibrations. It was both a boom sound and vibrations.

  • Saint Leonard QC. - I woke up to what sounded like a huge muffled explosion, looked outside but could see nothing, just heard voices, went to bathroon before going outside, checked the time it was 12:28am I put on my coat on and went downstairs to see if there was an explosion, heard a fire truck in the distance. There was nothing evident

  • Pont-viau, laval, Quebec. - I felt really strong shaking in my bed room, ran to check my television fell off the wall mount or what,I really got scared and went outside to check what was the sound which I heard which shaking, I had first thought in my mind that it is earthquake but when I went out side nothing was shaking so came in and started surfing for recent earthquake in Montreal and found out it was really an earthquake. I am scared and can't sleep now.
  • Pincourt, QC - Heard it first - sounded like heavy trucks going by. Then the chair started to shake and roll - almost like it was on a boat. Must have lasted at least 5 seconds - maybe 10. Wouldn't want to go through anything stronger!
  • Montreal north - I was in bed watching tv &i started feeling shaking and rumbling, heard a huge bang, my electricity went off ... I looked outside to see if it was a bomb plane crash or earthquake . It was for a good 10-15seconds. Crazy!!!! never felt one in my life..

I was woken up by a loud bang, the lights went out, my cat jumped, and the floor and the walls were shaking. My very first thought: a plane crashed nearby/flew insanely low. I didn't move, unable to process what I was hearing and feeling. When the lights came on, my boyfriend text me that it was an earthquake and my family ran downstairs slightly panicked. Not a great way to wake up!

  • Rawdon - We were on 2nd floor, didn't really feel it so much as hear it. Sounded like a UFO was hovering over our roof. Extremely loud vibrating, gurgley, rumbly sound. We thought of pipes exploding, a water fall or a series of logging trucks tearing down the highway. It took us a while, and many theories before we thought of earthquake. This is the first one I've ever felt. Not my husband's first but it wasn't recognizable right away to him. It was weird We even considered paranormal/supernatural force.

I thought it was odd to hear it, cause I never hear the train go by. That's when I researched the internet and found out it was an earthquake.

  • Trois-Rivières - Thought it was a huge truck at first, shook 2-3 times but pretty alarmingly, stronger than a truck would. Then it stopped for a few seconds, and started shaking more strongly. Nothing fell down, but the walls and the house was trembling more than ever before. It had already happened a few seconds/minutes before in Montreal according to the facebook comments I saw. I experienced an earthquake once before and it felt like a low rumble deep in the ground, this one felt superficial in comparison.

  • Rockland Ontario - My house shook for a little while, approx. 10 seconds and my brother came down to the ground level floor from upstairs because he felt it as well.

  • St Sauvueur - I was in bed on my computer :) 12.20a.m. when I felt these tremors and a slight shaking and realized that this is an earthquake. My dog was asleep and woke up and looked at me to say what's happening otherwise he stayed calm

  • West Island, Montreal - It sounded like a freight train was running past the house! I don't like next to a train at all. Shaking and rumbling for what felt like 5-10 seconds! Flat screen TV is still on the wall :), no one was hurt.
  • Unknown - 2 seconds of mild vibration followed by one large explosion sound. Really thought something had exploded. Did not feel like the previous earthquakes that have occured over the last 12 months.
  • Rockland - Was in bed doing crosswords and heard a rumble and the bed was swaying side to side - lasted between 5 and 10 seconds - looked at the clock 12:19a.m.

    MMI II (Very weak shaking) ?
    People :
    Felt by persons at rest, on upper floors or favorably placed.
    MMI III (Weak shaking) ?
    People :
    Felt indoors; hanging objects may swing, vibration similar to passing of light trucks, duration may be estimated, may not be recognized as an earthquake.
    MMI IV (Light shaking) ?
    People :
    Generally noticed indoors but not outside. Light sleepers may be awakened. Vibration may be likened to the passing of heavy traffic, or to the jolt of a heavy object falling or striking the building.
    Fittings :
    Doors and windows rattle. Glassware and crockery rattle. Liquids in open vessels may be slightly disturbed. Standing motorcars may rock.
    Structures :
    Walls and frames of buildings, and partitions and suspended ceilings in commercial buildings, may be heard to creak.
    MMI V (Moderate shaking) ?
    People :
    Generally felt outside, and by almost everyone indoors. Most sleepers awakened. A few people alarmed.
    Fittings :
    Small unstable objects are displaced or upset. Some glassware and crockery may be broken. Hanging pictures knock against the wall. Open doors may swing. Cupboard doors secured by magnetic catches may open. Pendulum clocks stop, start, or change rate.
    Structures :
    Some large display windows cracked. A few earthenware toilet fixtures cracked.
    MMI VI (Strong shaking) ?
    People Felt by all. People and animals alarmed. Many run outside. Difficulty experienced in walking steadily.
    Fittings :
    Objects fall from shelves. Pictures fall from walls. Some furniture moved on smooth floors, some unsecured free-standing fireplaces moved. Glassware and crockery broken. Very unstable furniture overturned. Small church and school bells ring. Appliances move on bench or table tops. Filing cabinets or "easy glide" drawers may open (or shut).
    Structures :
    Slight damage to buildings with low standard. Some stucco or cement plaster falls. Large display windows broken. Damage to a few weak domestic chimneys, some may fall.
    Environment :
    Trees and bushes shake, or are heard to rustle. Loose material may be dislodged from sloping ground, e.g. existing slides, talus slopes, shingle slides.
    MMI VII (Very strong shaking) ?
    People
    General alarm. Difficulty experienced in standing. Noticed by motorcar drivers who may stop.
    Fittings :
    Large bells ring. Furniture moves on smooth floors, may move on carpeted floors. Substantial damage to fragile contents of buildings.
    Structures :
    Unreinforced stone and brick walls cracked. Low standard buildings cracked with some minor masonry falls. A few instances of damage to buildings of ordinary workmanship. Unbraced parapets, unbraced brick gables, and architectural ornaments fall. Roofing tiles, especially ridge tiles may be dislodged. Many unreinforced domestic chimneys damaged, often falling from roof-line. Water tanks Type I burst. A few instances of damage to brick veneers and plaster or cement-based linings. Unrestrained water cylinders (hot-water cylinders) may move and leak. Some common windows cracked. Suspended ceilings damaged.
    Environment :
    Water made turbid by stirred up mud. Small slides such as falls of sand and gravel banks, and small rock-falls from steep slopes and cuttings. Instances of settlement of unconsolidated or wet, or weak soils. Some fine cracks appear in sloping ground. A few instances of liquefaction (i.e. small water and sand ejections).
    MMI VIII (Severe shaking) ?
    People Alarm may approach panic. Steering of motorcars greatly affected. Structures : Low standard buildings heavily damaged, some collapse. ordinary workmanship buildings damaged, some with partial collapse. Reinforced masonry or concrete buildings damaged in some cases. A few instances of damage to buildings and bridges designed and built to resist earthquakes. Monuments and pre-1976 elevated tanks and factory stacks twisted or brought down. Some pre-1965 infill masonry panels damaged. A few post-1980 brick veneers damaged. Decayed timber piles of houses damaged. Houses not secured to foundations may move. Most unreinforced domestic chimneys damaged, some below roof-line, many brought down. Environment : Cracks appear on steep slopes and in wet ground. Small to moderate slides in roadside cuttings and unsupported excavations. Small water and sand ejections and localized lateral spreading adjacent to streams, canals, lakes, etc.
    MMI IX (Violent shaking) ?
    Structures Many low standard buildings destroyed. Ordinary workmanship buildings heavily damaged, some collapse. Reinforced masonry or concrete buildings damaged, some with partial collapse. Buildings and bridges designed and built to resist earthquakes damaged in some cases, some with flexible frames seriously damaged. Damage or permanent distortion to some buildings and bridges, designed and built to normal use standards. Houses not secured to foundations shifted off. Brick veneers fall and expose frames. Environment : Cracking of ground conspicuous. Landsliding general on steep slopes. Liquefaction effects intensified and more widespread, with large lateral spreading and flow sliding adjacent to streams, canals, lakes, etc.

      I was watching tv and i hear this loud sound, like a plane flying low over me. The sound then became bigger and closer. I was sure a plane was crashing over me. Then i heard this loud BOOM and thats when it shaked for about 3-4 seconds. I panicked. It’s not fun to feel so vulnerable.

      There was a loud BOOM followed by a back and forth type shaking,the electricity went off, emergency lighting etc. went on..then the electricity kicked back on..it was all quite fast. My cats were acting strangely earlier this evening and were noticeably shaken during and afterwards. At ffirst I thought something had hit the earth..that’s how loud that boom hit was. A lot of folks were outside in their pj’s checking things out.

      Old Montreal. Small shake followed by what felt like a large nearby explosion along with a longer and stronger shake that lasted about 12 seconds.. Total duration about 35 seconds. No aftershocks in almost an hour now..i can’t believe it’s just M3.9

      felt the building moving, seemed like side to side more than up and down.. lasted maybe 10 seconds.. pictures bouncing but remained on wall.. kinda felt like being on somewhat bumpy road ; )
