Very strong earthquake just south of the Mentawai Islands, Indonesia
The Mentawai Islands are located to the west of Sumatra and have been hit many times in the recent past by violent earthquakes and tsunamis.
But again … what a difference in hypocenter depth in between international agencies like EMSC and BMKG and on the other hand local BMKG. BMKG is highly specialized, so we trust the local agency as (probably) most accurate.
The depth of BMKG is 83 km at a magnitude of M6.1 (see image at right).
NO tsunami was expected, but at the same time BMKG warned the people living in the Karimata strait to be aware of waves of 2 to 2,5 meter !
The combination of the Magnitude and focal depth led to an expected shaking of IV MMI only (light shaking).
So after all, worrisome at the start, but downplayed locally to a fairly normal earthquake.
The epicenter was located on the (dangerous) subduction slope.
We know from our experience while reporting about other Mentawai earthquakes, that the people are auto-evacuating to higher grounds after every serious earthquake, which certainly will have been the case today too.
The Mentawai islands are a surfers paradise which results often in video footage from foreigners who are not used to earthquakes (if they are not at sea of course).
A new damaging earthquake has occurred in Xinjiang in China. Over 1600 rooms and 1800 people have been affected.

Useful information to read this daily earthquake list
This earthquake list covers important earthquakes in the world.
If a more detailed page is present, the earthquake line will be linked to the detailed page.
For your comfort, we will provide in most cases a Google Satellite Map to give you an idea where the earthquake struck, which terrain it happened and if villages or cities are located in the immediate vicinity. The multi-source approach has been setup to compare values as seismology is not an exact science and needs a lot of calculations. The reference for the time zone is UTC (Coordinated Universal Time, also called GMT). Color explanation if we add some details above the list :
green color = NOT dangerous for damage or injuries
orange color = MODERATE risk for damage or injuries
red color = CONSIDERABLE risk for damage or injuries
QuakeSOS+ and QuakeSOS free are iPhone applications developed by Armand Vervaeck, the founder of Earthquake Report. The Application simplifies immediate group communication to friends and family members (with your exact GPS location) and is feeding the users with Earthquake Report news. The 0.99 US$ QuakeSOS+ version will support the activities of SOS Earthquakes.
