Strong earthquake close to Tonga
The earthquake measured M5.6, but due to its epicenter in the ocean, the weakening effect has resulted in a maximum light shaking for 96000 people. Nothing exceptional in this area of the world where earthquakes are a weekly phenomena.

Indian Ocean earthquake - Epicenter and Ridge faulting zone
Very strong earthquake in the Indian Ocean (greater Mauritius area)
A very powerful earthquake struck the ocean bed at approx. 400 km from Ile Rodrigues, both belonging to Mauritius and approx. 1000 km from the main Island of Mauritius and Reunion.
The earthquake is triggered by an irregular ridge zone (spreading plates) (Marie Celeste Fracture Zone), a typical ocean earthquake scenario. Fresh magma comes up in these ridges and pushes both plates (both sides of the ridge) in opposite directions. The movement of these plates is generating earthquakes and even powerful earthquakes as the moving plates sometimes are hanging due to the irregular shape.
The Magnitude was not strong enough to generate a tsunami. Because of the distance it must have surely been felt in Port Mathurin, the main city on Ile Rodrigues.

Useful information to read this daily earthquake list
This earthquake list covers important earthquakes in the world.
If a more detailed page is present, the earthquake line will be linked to the detailed page.
For your comfort, we will provide in most cases a Google Satellite Map to give you an idea where the earthquake struck, which terrain it happened and if villages or cities are located in the immediate vicinity. The multi-source approach has been setup to compare values as seismology is not an exact science and needs a lot of calculations. The reference for the time zone is UTC (Coordinated Universal Time, also called GMT). Color explanation if we add some details above the list :
green color = NOT dangerous for damage or injuries
orange color = MODERATE risk for damage or injuries
red color = CONSIDERABLE risk for damage or injuries
QuakeSOS+ and QuakeSOS free are iPhone applications developed by Armand Vervaeck, the founder of Earthquake Report. The Application simplifies immediate group communication to friends and family members (with your exact GPS location) and is feeding the users with Earthquake Report news. The 0.99 US$ QuakeSOS+ version will support the activities of SOS Earthquakes.
