Moderate 4.5M earthquake 117km from Canberra, Australia.
A 4.5M earthquake struck 13km from Moe, Australia at a depth of 10km (USGS). This could be felt as a V (moderate shaking) around this area and as weak to light far away. We at earthquake report think this earthquake will not cause injuries or heavy damage and only light damage like fallen objects.

There have been a number of felt reports from Melbourne coming in.

The Geoscience Australia website was down momentarily.

The quake will be felt around V intensity. Seismologist at the Seismology Research Centre, Gary Gibson, has confirmed that the latest shake has been a magnitude 4 earthquake east of Thorpdale.

13km (8mi) SW of Moe, Australia 21km (13mi) W of Morwell, Australia 34km (21mi) W of Traralgon, Australia 77km (48mi) ESE of Cranbourne, Australia 114km (71mi) ESE of Melbourne, Australia

Double strong but safe earthquakes in the Kuril islands.
A 6.1M  earthquake at a depth of  17km and a 6.3M at a depth of 10km (USGS) struck 137-147km away from Severo-Kuril’sk, Russia. The earthquakes moderate depth and the location of both epicenters, on the ocean, should had reduced the intensity making both of them “harmless” with a max felt intensity of V (moderate shaking)  for 1000 people . A tsunami is not possible because the magnitudes are not big enough to create one.

  • Melbourne - About 19:10 20th July. Felt the house shaking. Lasted about 40-50 seconds .
  • Drouin, Australia - Drouin Victoria Australia. Lasted about 10 seconds. 1 month and a day after the last one felt in this area. Near Morwell Gippsland.

  • Drouin - Very slight shock, creaking sounds, lasted about 10 seconds
  • Emerald, Victoria, Australia - Not as severe or as long as the earthquake in June
  • Yinnar, Victoria, Australia - 10 seconds
  • Sunbury Victoria Australia - I was lounging on my bed with my head leaning against the wall when at 7.12pm the quake hit. My cats jumped up looking confused. The insides of the walls creaked. Last around 15 seconds
  • Ringwood East, Melbourne - Sitting watching TV. Felt floor shake and heard window rattle.
  • Millgrove Victoria - House trembled then rocked...approx 15 secs
  • Garfield - Didn't last long 10 secs or so
  • Glen Waverley, VIC 3152 - Windows rattling for 10secs more or less. Less strong than last month (19/06/2012)
  • Melbourne - 1st floor old building. Gentle rocking back and forth. Not as noticeable as june quake.
  • Trafalgar East - Another decent tremmor, lasted for about 5 seconds.
  • Richmond, victoria - Not as strong as last one but certainly noticeable only lasted 5-10 secs
  • Warragul, Victoria - Lasted for 20 to 30 seconds. No damage
  • Kalorama - House rattled and lights shook for about 10 seconds
  • Reservoir - Couch shook, not as bad as june
  • Trafalgar - Poor birds don't like the rattling of the house and the cage, then again neither does the wife hahaha.
  • Berwick, Victoria - Approx 7.12 pm, 20 July 2012 felt the dinner table slightly shaking and watched the glass of water shaking. Continued for approx 30 secs.
  • Trafalgar - Shook the Mrs and the birds up.
  • Australia - 10 secs, noticeable but as much as June quake
  • Balnarring Vic 3926 - About eight seconds of rocking movements. Nothing fell.
  • Frankston - Approx 7.06 pm tonight in Frankston area. Furniture rattling etc.
  • Warragul, Victoria - It sounded like a truck coming up to the house then the house shook.
  • Balnarring Vic - 7.13 pm. Went for 10 seconds
  • Berwick - House shook and glass rattled for maybe 5 seconds.
  • Melbourne - A good 'wobble'. Didn't hear this one (unlike 3 weeks ago from the same location). P & S arrivals both very clear.
  • Sunbury - Windows creaked then I felt the shaking. There were four of us in the room and only two of us felt it. Wasn't anywhere near as strong as last months one.
  • Phillip Island - House shook slightly 19:10 Phillip Island
  • Beaconsfield VIC 3807 - Hi was sitting in study on our computer, didnt know at first? big tremmor
  • Phillip Island - House moved quite well noticed by all
  • Beaconsfield VIC 3807 - At about 8pm Friday 20/07/2012
  • Pakenham Upper - House shook a little bit and there was also and wind sound with it, about 7.13 pm

  • Frankston - House wobbly, not as long as last tme
  • Berwick - Berwick light shaking lasted about 10secs
  • Rhyll, Phillip Island - Rhyll, Phillip Island. The house shook and trembled as though someone was running all over the roof.
  • Yinnar - Fire flue rattled first then the house shook for about 10 seconds - wasn't as terrifying as the June 19th one.
  • Inverloch - Sitting in my longe room on my recliner felt shaking for 5 seconds
  • Cranbourne,victora - Not a lot of shaking sounded lie a really big gust of wind, no one else in the family noticed anything.
  • Dandenong north - Was sitting on the couch approx 7.10pm and the couch started shaking. Lasted for Approx 10-15 seconds
  • Churchill - Wasn't as bad as the bigger one in June but still enough to make me get up and stand in doorway. Was just starting to think bout running downstairs and go outside when it stopped.
  • carrum downs vic - My lounge shook for about 5 seconds. It scared me a bit.
  • Moe - A strong shake that lasted two seconds or less. There were mild rumblings for the past two days prior to this new earthquake, and on the day. I can also still feel rumblings from time to time 11 hours later though they are small. I will get pretty annoyed if anyone calls the 4+ earthquake we have just had "an aftershock" from the one we had around a month ago.

  • St Kilda - Around four, two or three second tremours, over one or two minutes
  • Moe - I have experienced the "Big" earthquake in Japan. For 11 years my husband and I lived in Japan. I would have to say, that 5+ magnitude felt in Moe would be the 3rd worst earthquake! Utterly horrible. The house got pounded back and forth like a matchbox! The noise of the maddening rumble of the quake was very scary. Since then, there have been over 200 tremors in Moe and we have had a 4.4 magnitude as well. We came back to Moe hoping for a bit of peace from earthquakes...
  • Boronia - I regularly feel a shaking in Boronia, Melbourne. I hear it more than feel it when I'm sitting on my couch and all is quiet. Sometimes it will happens several times in a night. Sometimes I might not hear it for days. I'm sure it is not an earthquake. Can anyone offer me any suggestions as to what it may be? It almost sounds like someone is dropping something the size of a house several kilometers away. Baffled.

    People :
    Felt indoors; hanging objects may swing, vibration similar to passing of light trucks, duration may be estimated, may not be recognized as an earthquake.
    MMI IV (Light shaking) ?
    People :
    Generally noticed indoors but not outside. Light sleepers may be awakened. Vibration may be likened to the passing of heavy traffic, or to the jolt of a heavy object falling or striking the building.
    Fittings :
    Doors and windows rattle. Glassware and crockery rattle. Liquids in open vessels may be slightly disturbed. Standing motorcars may rock.
    Structures :
    Walls and frames of buildings, and partitions and suspended ceilings in commercial buildings, may be heard to creak.
    MMI V (Moderate shaking) ?
    People :
    Generally felt outside, and by almost everyone indoors. Most sleepers awakened. A few people alarmed.
    Fittings :
    Small unstable objects are displaced or upset. Some glassware and crockery may be broken. Hanging pictures knock against the wall. Open doors may swing. Cupboard doors secured by magnetic catches may open. Pendulum clocks stop, start, or change rate.
    Structures :
    Some large display windows cracked. A few earthenware toilet fixtures cracked.
    MMI VI (Strong shaking) ?
    People Felt by all. People and animals alarmed. Many run outside. Difficulty experienced in walking steadily.
    Fittings :
    Objects fall from shelves. Pictures fall from walls. Some furniture moved on smooth floors, some unsecured free-standing fireplaces moved. Glassware and crockery broken. Very unstable furniture overturned. Small church and school bells ring. Appliances move on bench or table tops. Filing cabinets or "easy glide" drawers may open (or shut).
    Structures :
    Slight damage to buildings with low standard. Some stucco or cement plaster falls. Large display windows broken. Damage to a few weak domestic chimneys, some may fall.
    Environment :
    Trees and bushes shake, or are heard to rustle. Loose material may be dislodged from sloping ground, e.g. existing slides, talus slopes, shingle slides.
    MMI VII (Very strong shaking) ?
    People
    General alarm. Difficulty experienced in standing. Noticed by motorcar drivers who may stop.
    Fittings :
    Large bells ring. Furniture moves on smooth floors, may move on carpeted floors. Substantial damage to fragile contents of buildings.
    Structures :
    Unreinforced stone and brick walls cracked. Low standard buildings cracked with some minor masonry falls. A few instances of damage to buildings of ordinary workmanship. Unbraced parapets, unbraced brick gables, and architectural ornaments fall. Roofing tiles, especially ridge tiles may be dislodged. Many unreinforced domestic chimneys damaged, often falling from roof-line. Water tanks Type I burst. A few instances of damage to brick veneers and plaster or cement-based linings. Unrestrained water cylinders (hot-water cylinders) may move and leak. Some common windows cracked. Suspended ceilings damaged.
    Environment :
    Water made turbid by stirred up mud. Small slides such as falls of sand and gravel banks, and small rock-falls from steep slopes and cuttings. Instances of settlement of unconsolidated or wet, or weak soils. Some fine cracks appear in sloping ground. A few instances of liquefaction (i.e. small water and sand ejections).
    MMI VIII (Severe shaking) ?
    People Alarm may approach panic. Steering of motorcars greatly affected. Structures : Low standard buildings heavily damaged, some collapse. ordinary workmanship buildings damaged, some with partial collapse. Reinforced masonry or concrete buildings damaged in some cases. A few instances of damage to buildings and bridges designed and built to resist earthquakes. Monuments and pre-1976 elevated tanks and factory stacks twisted or brought down. Some pre-1965 infill masonry panels damaged. A few post-1980 brick veneers damaged. Decayed timber piles of houses damaged. Houses not secured to foundations may move. Most unreinforced domestic chimneys damaged, some below roof-line, many brought down. Environment : Cracks appear on steep slopes and in wet ground. Small to moderate slides in roadside cuttings and unsupported excavations. Small water and sand ejections and localized lateral spreading adjacent to streams, canals, lakes, etc.
    MMI IX (Violent shaking) ?
    Structures Many low standard buildings destroyed. Ordinary workmanship buildings heavily damaged, some collapse. Reinforced masonry or concrete buildings damaged, some with partial collapse. Buildings and bridges designed and built to resist earthquakes damaged in some cases, some with flexible frames seriously damaged. Damage or permanent distortion to some buildings and bridges, designed and built to normal use standards. Houses not secured to foundations shifted off. Brick veneers fall and expose frames. Environment : Cracking of ground conspicuous. Landsliding general on steep slopes. Liquefaction effects intensified and more widespread, with large lateral spreading and flow sliding adjacent to streams, canals, lakes, etc.
