Mystery boom and shaking in Southern California ?
Based on some incoming reports we have opened a preliminary posting. If you have felt what felt like an earthquake, please fill in a form.
Until now we have not received a USGS earthquake notification and all values below are not to be considered as real. They have been simply entered to make this listing possible and until official data comes in.
An airplane generated sonic boom cannot be excluded at this time (we had other similar experiences in the past).
Update : Officials at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar said the sound did not come from the base.
Update : NBC San Diego reports : Sometimes, a military exercise known as chaff can cause a similar sound. Two months ago, when San Diegans heard a similar sound, there was evidence of chaff on weather radar. On Friday, however, Tina Stall with the National Weather Service said there was no visible chaff in the area at the time the noise was reported. A spokesperson from Camp Pendleton said Marines are not training with anything unusual. They often train with various military equipment and will be training with tanks both Saturday and Sunday.
Update : USGS has just reported that it was NOT an earthquake
Update :
We are now 1 hour 23 minutes after it happened and still no clue about what happened!
Update :
A scientist has good reasons that it was a “skyquake” a military generated Atmospheric tremor. It is normally exercised 50 miles in the Pacific and it is normally not felt or heard on the coast. Favorable winds can take the sound and coupled shaking however to the coast.
Final Update :
Loud Sonic Boom originated at an air show on a carrier off the coast.

  • 74868 - rolled through the house rumbling and slight lifting effct as it rolled through
  • la jolla- ucsd - one big jolt
  • Encinitas ca - Light shaking reported
  • Pacific Beach, San Diego, CA, USA - VERY short (maybe 2-3 seconds long), yet very strong and loud. It sounded and felt like a car crashed into a building, or a small bomb went off underground. It happened around 12:45 PM PST.
  • Carlsbad, CA - One massive jolt, really strong, over in a second.
  • Del Mar - Strong jolt but over quick
  • La Jolla - Rumble and rattle more than shaking, like a slow sonic boom.
  • Encinitas, ca - Short but strong. 2 shakes.
  • Carlsbad - Loud boom then light shaking. Mostly noticed windows and skylight shaking and rattling. Lasted maybe 3-5 seconds.
  • Encinitas - Short but strong. 2 big shakes
  • Point Loma - Load strong jolt, thought the french doors were blown out, lasted approx. 2 seconds.
  • Carlsbad Village - Glass patio window rattled for 1-2 seconds, but I didn't feel shaking. Neighborhood dogs barking after.
  • la mesa, ca - about 15+ minutes ago, there was 2 shakes. both my husband who is on the ground floor and I on the second floor felt a quake.
  • Carlsbad CA - Very SUdden strong shaking short lived
  • Pacific Beach - Only a few seconds, but shook kinda hard and was moderately loud.
  • 92130 - My front glass doors were shaking a lot..i thought one of the home by me blew up and caused my front doors to shake...then I realized it was an EQ
  • La Jolla-UTC - building shook for a few seconds
  • San Diego, CA (North Clairemont) - Felt like something hit the house or knocked down a wall. Strong jolt.
  • UNITED STATES - definitely felt it!
  • pacific beach - felt like i was on a bridge and a truck drove by. very quick. 1-2 seconds
  • San Pedro - Rattled windows for 2-3 seconds
  • Pacific Beach - Was really strange... only 2-3 seconds as mentioned but loud enough and enough shaking to set off a few car alarms.
  • Del Mar - Very intense, quick boom/shake. Windows and doors strongly shook.
  • Bay Ho - very short duration but loud and strong. Thought my windows were going to break.
  • 92008 - 3 second jolt, shook the windows big time
  • Encinitas - It wasn't a 2.6 that's for sure! It was a loud boom and rather strong rattle. Lasted maybe 3 seconds but it sure made the street workers stop for a few minutes too...
  • Unknown - Del Mar -- Several intense shakes that shook the ground of my 2nd level apartment and rattled the windows. However, as soon as I stood up to go under the doorway, it had stopped.
  • Encinitas - I heard and felt a loud noise that seemed to come from tje south east and grew with intensity shaking windows . It lasted about 15 to 30 seconds and ended without causing any damage. It seemed to come fto the air and not an earthquake.
  • La Jolla - One loud boom; very quick
  • Carmel Valley/San Diego - Quick jolt and then it was over.
  • Escondido, CA - About 12:45 pm, strong but quick.
  • UNITED STATES - Loud, fast violent window shaking and rumble. More like a bomb
  • Encinitas, CA - I did not feel any jolt, BUT the walls shook. I am here at my office and the walls were the only thing that shook. The floor did not shake. I do not believe it was an earthquake. I have been thrhough many EQ's to know what they feel like.
  • 92037 - very loud boom, not sure about shaking
  • La Jolla - Quick strong jolt (2-3 seconds) Windows rattled
  • del mar - more of a jolt. windows and doors rattled.
  • Del Mar California - Loud boom, waited for shake but didn't feel any
  • 92109 - No shaking but a big bang.
  • 92037 La Jolla Village Dr - Quick, more like an explosion or sonic boom in the distance. 1-2 second rattle of the windows.
  • Carlsbad, CA 92008 - At 12:45 pm today, Friday, June 29, 2012, the ground was rumbling and my home shaking. My first thoughts were -- there must have an explosion of some kind somewhere -- or it was an earthquake -- but then it lasted too long to be an explosive episode. I started looking on the internet to see if I could find out what happened, and I found your website. None of your categories describes what I felt. Every quake in my experience has a unique feel - and this was unlike others in the past.
  • Encinitas, CA - No way that was a 2.6! My house felt like it was going to come down! It was very brief but very violent shaking here in Encinitas. Anyone know the actual strength of the earthquake? I am not buying 2.6.
  • Kearny Mesa - Felt and sounded like sonic boom, not earthquake.
  • 92129 - Strong jolt but lasted for a second or 2
  • Vista - It was a strong shaking which shook the glasses in our cabnet. Lasted about 30 seconds, longer then the normal short ones.
  • Encinitas, CA - Felt just like...a quick earthquake! The dog went running and barking in all directions. She was terrified. Windows shook. Didn't feel the ground shake. The dog is still wigged.
  • carlsbad - no shaking, just felt like a truck hit something
  • Carlsbad, CA - I was sitting on the couch and I heard a rumbling sound and windows were shaking for 3 - 7 seconds.
  • Encinitas - Strong shaking, lasted about 10-15 seconds. oddly it felt primarily as if the house and walls were shaking more so than any ground shaking. when I looked at our hanging lamps they were not swinging so I am leaning towards either a sonic boom or bomb blast wave - although the former is more likely than the later. USGS websites are coming up empty in terms of seismographic evidence but this felt like an earthquake to me as it was happening. I am in Cardiff and my friend ont he phone in Leucadia
  • Carlsbad,CA - moderate shaking, over in about 5 seconds
  • Mission Hills - I felt It shook windows and my house for a few seconds. It made a booming noise. I read it was only about seven miles below the surface of the earth online.
  • Pacific Beach - It was about 2-3 seconds long, and my sliding glass door and blinds started to shake and there was a loud noise as well.
  • San Diego, Ca - Rattled my windows and doors. Woke and alarmed my sleeping cats. Event was short and quick, but strong like a sudden gust of very heavy wind or a snapping cable.
  • just east of Del Mar - Seemed like a very long time, but realistically speaking probably only lasted 2 seconds (approx). More of a prolonged epicenter-type jolt than the rolling sensation of a quake some distance away..
  • San Marcos - San Elijo Hills - sounded like a big boom.
  • Solana Beach - Strong shaking but was over very fast. Maybe 2-3 seconds long.
  • Encinitas - No shaking, just a loud Sonic Boom that rattled the walls and windows. Did not feel like an earthquake.
  • Point Loma - Brief but powerful jolt, felt like the wall in the store was going to come down.
  • La Jolla - Strong Jolt. Under building car park - compressed air - set off car alarms - 8980 Villa La Jolla Drive
  • San Diego California - Sligh shaking windows shook i rose up amd it was over a fairly quick but kind of intense quake
  • La Jolla - Pretty big initial shake (made a large building on UCSD campus shake and sway) and sound. Felt several smaller swaying aftershocks. Seemed bigger than 2.6 unless it was right here.
  • linda vista - I say high altitude sonic boom from military aircraft
  • San Diego - at first i thought someone was trying to open my back door but until i felt the whole house shake i suddenly realized it was an EARTHQUAKE!i also realize it was an earthquake because my back door wasn't even locked!!!
  • San Marcos - felt like a strong gust of wind came thru my back door very loud
  • Earthquake Report - All values in the listing including depth and Magnitude are NOT true. They have been entered to make this listing possible so that people were able to enter what they have experienced (and it worked :) ).
  • San Pedro - A bizarre isolated shaking. The interior door that leads to our garage (from our foyer) shook 2 to 3 times as if someone was trying to get in (it was locked). It freaked me out so much I actually had the police come out (I thought someone was in our garage). Later found out that two neighbors experienced the exact same thing at the exact same time including all of our animals reacting as well. Didn't sound like a sonic boom and didn't "feel" like an earthquake. Just weird!
  • Chula Vista, Ca - Did not feel the ground move nor saw any of my hanging lights swaying. Loud rattling and shaking for about 5 seconds from all my windows.
  • UNITED STATES - Encinitas - Boom followed by 2-3 second strong shaking of house and patio
  • Clairemont - Doors and windows were rattling for a few seconds
  • Encinitas, ca - I was outside and it scared me so bad! Loud boom, I thought an atomic bomb went off in the distance! Then the ground shook! I was shaking a little after from adrenaline!
  • Chula Vista 91910 - Strong shake, windows and doors all shook luckily none of my kids woke up
  • Vista, CA - There was one felt here at 12:45 very strong jolt, and again around 1:45, this was longer and more rolling.
  • Del Mar - Loud boom shook the doors and windows. Ground shook once and then it was over.
  • del mar - We felt a firm shaking and the dog was spooked.
  • vista - There was a sudden strong shaking. It was almost more of a jolting sensation.only lasted a couuple seconds with a loud rumble. What could this be if not an earthquake?
  • chula vista ca. - Short one but very loud, like an explosion o.O
  • Ocean Beach - I work on Newport Ave in Ocean Beach and I heard and felt it I dont know what that was but it moved the peir I work in front of it it did and didnt seem like and earth quake it felt more like a bomb dropping close by than an earthquake, I have experienced many earthquakes and usually the floor shakes back and forth in a swaying motion moving everything on top this shook the building very hard like a boom instead of a rattle? any ideas?
  • Downtown San Diego, next to Lindberg fie - Windows rattled and door shook for just 2 or 3 seconds, for a second it sounded like the beginning of the Easter earthquake a few years a go. But I didn't feel anything. I live right under the landing path of airport so I thought maybe that but that's not normal.
  • Carmel valley - It sounded like someone was upstairs knocking on the walls and the noise that the shaking windows made was moderately loud. It also sounded like a bunch of stuff was falling down out of closets or off shelves but nothing did fall. We didn't feel the ground shake at all.
  • Point Loma - loud rumble noise hard thump that shook ground and rattled doors thump felt like it was coming from underground. it felt hard lasted 3 secs
  • La Jolla - A loud noise was heard then all car alarms on my street went off. Slight shaking of the house.
  • 92054 - Sudden shaking and rattling. Long enough to almost get up and grab my animals lol
  • Oceanside, CA - windows rattled loudly, felt for about 10 seconds at 12:45/12:50 PM today. I was certain it was an earthquake
  • RSF/Escondido border, CA - I was on the ground floor. Suddenly heard all the windows and skylights rattling very violently, as if they would smash if they rattled at that intensity much longer. Short but STRONG. Didn't feel the ground move, but the windows made it "sound" like an earthquake. Husband was upstairs and did feel shaking. By the time I yelled, "Earthquake!" it was over. I grew up in SD and have experienced many earthquakes, but for some reason, this one scared the heck out of me - adrenalin
  • La Jolla - At around 12:45 PM there was a very short rumble for like 1/2 a second with one strong boom/jolt right after! I was laying on my floor coincidentally, after my workout, so felt it very good.
  • Carlsbad, ca - 4:36 pm slight shake
  • Carlsbad - Quick shaking 4 seconds.
  • San Pedro, CA - We also felt this mysterious shaking boom at 12:45 today. It didn't really feel like a normal earthquake. Very strange!
  • Bird Rock - Was walking from the office/den into the hallway when a very loud and relatively long boom hit. It was so much like the start to strong deeper earthquakes I felt in the desert that I instinctively braced myself in the door frame waiting for the shaking to start...never did, just car alarms and I had to "jaw-pop" my eardrums.
  • 92103 11th floor - a slight jolt
  • 4079 Governor Drive San Diego CA 92122 - Lasted a few seconds, was pretty loud and strong shaking. I'm located near La Jolla
  • La Jolla/Pacific Beach - At 11:45 I felt a very strong boom that seemed to come from the earth. Shaking lasted a few seconds. At 12:45 I heard a rumbling in the distance that got louder and more intense but always seemed to be at a distance. Lasted about 20 seconds. I've noticed that this experience seems to be shared from San Pedro to Chula Vista and as east as Vista. That a huge area to not show as an earthquake. It felt more below then above to me.
  • Cardiff by the Sea - We were eating lunch on the patio of Cardiff By the Sea - Beach House, when the windows started shaking violently, lights started swinging crazily, silverware jumping on table. This lasted around 8 seconds. Scary!
  • San Pedro, CA - It was a quick, loud boom that shook the windows.
  • san diego, ca - I was in bathroom w door closed & I heard a vry sudden, strong, & Sharp shaking of the closed door. It was vry loud & noticable, tho I didn't feel much ground shaking or even notice things shaking on wall but it was vry brief tho strong lasting only a matter of seconds. May sound weird but aside from the doors movement, I don't know whether I felt it or heard it but there was a definate kinda "boom" & grumbling noise either felt or heard or both when it occurred.
  • Carlsbad - Strong shaking throughout entire house ~ 2 - 3 seconds maybe longer between noon and 1 pm today
  • Ocean Beach - Loud thunderous rolling boom from the sky, followed by a strong jolt from the ground. It shook my house and set off a car alarm. I ran outside, expecting to see smoke or fire because it sounded like an explosion. It resembled an earthquake a few years ago, quick and very loud.
  • SAN PEDRO - I WAS UPSTAIRS ON MY LAPTOP SITTING ON MY BED (CAL-KING WOOD FRAME)SHOOK MY BED AND PICTURES ON WALL.HEARD SOUND OF ITEMS IN HOUSE MOVING. LASTED ABOUT 2-3 SECONDS.
  • Vista, CA - My four-story office building shook and vibrated for about 2 seconds and windows rattled, but no damage.
  • Pacific Beach - Riding my bike down the street in PB, just as I came to a stop I heard and instatly felt a quick 'boom' like a shockwave or something, felt like there was a medium to small explosion very close by but there was no explosion, not sure how else to describe it. Noone else seemed to be looking around like me but some car alarms were going off. It was very windy riding down the street perpendicular to the ocean afterward.
  • malibu, CA - Felt rumbling, was sure it was a mild earthquake but could find no USGS report.
  • Coronado, CA 92118 - The windows rattled, and we heard a boom that was soft and very low in pitch. The boom was not frightening because it sounded so far away and weak.
  • Point Loma - I was on the second floor. I initially thought a car had run into the building. The sound was loud! I'm very curious about what this actually was.
  • 90732 - a hard shake as I was sitting down, got up and felt the house moving and then a loud boom. i felt earthquakes in the past but this was different
  • Carlsbad - Shook widly. The windows and doors rattled, but there was no shaking of the floor.
  • El Cajon, ca - EL CAJON,/ MT. HELIX: LASTED ABOUT 10 SECONDS. NO SHAKING OF STRUCTURE BUT THE SOUND - SOUND BUILT UP AND THEN DIMINISHED AT SAME RATE: SOUNDED LIKE A GIANT STREET SWEEPER WAS GOING RIGHT OVER MY HOUSE. HAVE HEARD SONIC BOOMS BEFORE - NEVER HEARD ONE LIKE THIS. IF THIS WAS IN FACT CAUSED BY TWO JETS ABOUT 30 TO 40 MILES OFFSHORE I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW HOW THEY CREATED THIS SOUND.
  • Dededo, Guam - Heard a distant boom, then shaking. Caused typhoon shutters to rattle and hard enough to cause my drink to splash out of the glass.

MMI II (Very weak shaking) ?
    People :
Felt by persons at rest, on upper floors or favorably placed.
    MMI III (Weak shaking) ?
    People :
Felt indoors; hanging objects may swing, vibration similar to passing of light trucks, duration may be estimated, may not be recognized as an earthquake.
    MMI IV (Light shaking) ?
    People :
Generally noticed indoors but not outside. Light sleepers may be awakened. Vibration may be likened to the passing of heavy traffic, or to the jolt of a heavy object falling or striking the building.
    Fittings :
Doors and windows rattle. Glassware and crockery rattle. Liquids in open vessels may be slightly disturbed. Standing motorcars may rock.
    Structures :
Walls and frames of buildings, and partitions and suspended ceilings in commercial buildings, may be heard to creak.
    MMI V (Moderate shaking) ?
    People :
Generally felt outside, and by almost everyone indoors. Most sleepers awakened. A few people alarmed.
    Fittings :
Small unstable objects are displaced or upset. Some glassware and crockery may be broken. Hanging pictures knock against the wall. Open doors may swing. Cupboard doors secured by magnetic catches may open. Pendulum clocks stop, start, or change rate.
    Structures :
Some large display windows cracked. A few earthenware toilet fixtures cracked.
    MMI VI (Strong shaking) ?
People Felt by all. People and animals alarmed. Many run outside. Difficulty experienced in walking steadily.
    Fittings :
Objects fall from shelves. Pictures fall from walls. Some furniture moved on smooth floors, some unsecured free-standing fireplaces moved. Glassware and crockery broken. Very unstable furniture overturned. Small church and school bells ring. Appliances move on bench or table tops. Filing cabinets or "easy glide" drawers may open (or shut).
    Structures :
Slight damage to buildings with low standard. Some stucco or cement plaster falls. Large display windows broken. Damage to a few weak domestic chimneys, some may fall.
    Environment :
Trees and bushes shake, or are heard to rustle. Loose material may be dislodged from sloping ground, e.g. existing slides, talus slopes, shingle slides.
MMI VII (Very strong shaking) ?
    People
General alarm. Difficulty experienced in standing. Noticed by motorcar drivers who may stop.
    Fittings :
Large bells ring. Furniture moves on smooth floors, may move on carpeted floors. Substantial damage to fragile contents of buildings.
    Structures :
Unreinforced stone and brick walls cracked. Low standard buildings cracked with some minor masonry falls. A few instances of damage to buildings of ordinary workmanship. Unbraced parapets, unbraced brick gables, and architectural ornaments fall. Roofing tiles, especially ridge tiles may be dislodged. Many unreinforced domestic chimneys damaged, often falling from roof-line. Water tanks Type I burst. A few instances of damage to brick veneers and plaster or cement-based linings. Unrestrained water cylinders (hot-water cylinders) may move and leak. Some common windows cracked. Suspended ceilings damaged.
    Environment :
Water made turbid by stirred up mud. Small slides such as falls of sand and gravel banks, and small rock-falls from steep slopes and cuttings. Instances of settlement of unconsolidated or wet, or weak soils. Some fine cracks appear in sloping ground. A few instances of liquefaction (i.e. small water and sand ejections).
    MMI VIII (Severe shaking) ?
People Alarm may approach panic. Steering of motorcars greatly affected. Structures : Low standard buildings heavily damaged, some collapse. ordinary workmanship buildings damaged, some with partial collapse. Reinforced masonry or concrete buildings damaged in some cases. A few instances of damage to buildings and bridges designed and built to resist earthquakes. Monuments and pre-1976 elevated tanks and factory stacks twisted or brought down. Some pre-1965 infill masonry panels damaged. A few post-1980 brick veneers damaged. Decayed timber piles of houses damaged. Houses not secured to foundations may move. Most unreinforced domestic chimneys damaged, some below roof-line, many brought down. Environment : Cracks appear on steep slopes and in wet ground. Small to moderate slides in roadside cuttings and unsupported excavations. Small water and sand ejections and localized lateral spreading adjacent to streams, canals, lakes, etc.
    MMI IX (Violent shaking) ?
Structures Many low standard buildings destroyed. Ordinary workmanship buildings heavily damaged, some collapse. Reinforced masonry or concrete buildings damaged, some with partial collapse. Buildings and bridges designed and built to resist earthquakes damaged in some cases, some with flexible frames seriously damaged. Damage or permanent distortion to some buildings and bridges, designed and built to normal use standards. Houses not secured to foundations shifted off. Brick veneers fall and expose frames. Environment : Cracking of ground conspicuous. Landsliding general on steep slopes. Liquefaction effects intensified and more widespread, with large lateral spreading and flow sliding adjacent to streams, canals, lakes, etc.
