Very strong earthquake along the Fethiye, Turkey coast creates panic among tourists and injures +50 people

Earthquake overview :  A very strong dangerous earthquake occurred on June 10 at 15:44 local time along the Turkey and Greece Coast and scared hundred thousands of people in tourist destinations like Dalaman, Oludeniz and Fethiye. the earthquake was also well felt in many of the Greek Islands.

Update 11/06 – 13:16 UTC  :
- 64 people were treated in the hospitals for “jumping” injuries.
- A big rock avalanche in Fethiye was a major concern but had a happy end
- Some minor damage occurred near the epicenter area

Update : The Turkish authorities told the press that 57 people were counted as injured (52 from Fethiye and 5 from neighboring villages). They said NO tourists were among the wounded …

Update 23:55 UTC : At least 51 injured so far. All of the injured have been linked to jumping from balconies and windows. No collapsed houses but cracks have appeared in some walls. The shaking was said to last 1 minute.
As said earlier, Fethiye and Oludeniz are most hurt by this earthquake. More than 30 aftershocks have been reported.

7-8 citizens have been transferred to the hospital. They jumped off their balconies in fear. Apart from that, no damage has yet been reported.

Update 14:28 UTC : At least 15 aftershocks have been noticed so far. Turkish press talks about 7 injured people who are treated in hospitals. All of them have been jumping from their balconies! The Turkish specialized earthquake forces are currently making assessments of eventual damage, but we have no reports from them so far.

Update : As can be seen on the seismic hazard map below, today’s earthquake does not come as a surprise. The hardest hit locations like Fethiye, Oludeniz and Dalaman are very close to an important fault zone (as well as Rhodos in Greece). Powerful earthquakes may occur up to several tens of km distance from the fault line.

Earthquake-Report.com is one of the advocates of MANDATORY EARTHQUAKE PREPAREDNESS info to tourists. A lot of very touristic destinations in the world are at high risks for earthquakes, but mostly tour operators and local authorities are avoiding the topic because they think it will chase tourists away. ER thinks that the risk on earthquakes in some areas is bigger than a hotel fire although Fire information is present in every hotel room. We think that a few lines on information will be enough to at least not jump from balconies or windows like in Turkey today.

Update : Based on the many reports from earthquake-report.com readers, the highest intensity (shaking) values are reported from Calis, Oludeniz and Fethiye.

Update : Awaiting further news from the epicenter area and because the epicenter looks to be closer to the coast than initially expected, we have raised the Alert status of this earthquake to RED.

Update : A reader in Oludenir reports : Standing on the beach, heard buildings rattle, people shouting then vibration that lasted around 2 seconds. Very slight rock disturbance on mountain to south of beach.

Update : Many aftershocks have been noticed so far and will continue the following hours and days. Tourists will not be sleeping well tonight, locals are more used to earthquakes but are seldom confronted with heavy earthquakes like this one.

Update : USGS has increased his Magnitude to M 5.8, but – good news – the depth was decreased to 39 km (less dangerous). USGS puts his epicenter at only 24 km Oludinez.

Update : Electricity and Mobile communications have been lost in Fethiye. Our readers are reporting heavy shaking in Damalan and Fethiye.

Update : USGS reports a M5.7 Magnitude at a depth of 20 km. 275,000 people will (according to USGS) have felt a moderate shaking. If USGS is right in his expected intensity, earthquake-report.com believes this earthquake not to generate serious damage.
The epicenter of the earthquake is only 31 km SW Fethiye, Turkey (pop 60,437)
Luckily the epicenter is below the sea floor, but the impact will still be considerable in the Turkish cities of Fethiye and Dalaman. Both cities are also Tourist destinations.

  • Sheffield UK - We had just left a restaurant after lunch and I decided to use a cash dispenser. As I was stood using the machine it started to shake. I thought it was caused by a local wind. We walked back to our hotel and found some concerned tourists in the lobby. They had been on their balconies and were quite shaken! It was only then that we realised what had happened! We have experienced a 6.5 quake before on Rhodes!

  • cheshire - In Kolymbia laying on sun bed, felt some sligth shaking, i sat up to see what it was and then the floor seemed to move from side to side, saw some worried looks from other holiday makers. After about 20 seconds it seemed to stop. my daughter who was in the pool didnt notice anything.

  • Megalo Chorio Village, Tilos Island, Gre - Sat on a sunbed outside at 15.45 local time. Moderate shaking for about 15 seconds. Then at 15.50 light shaking for about 5 seconds.
  • Kolymba - Strong shaking for about 10 seconds! everything fallen off shelves in my room and pictures swaying! Loud rumble noise as well. Was my first earthquake! wasnt nice!
  • KalKan - Felt like someone was shaking my sun cot for about 10 seconds. Thought it was my husband so I ignored it!

  • Alanya - Felt like a washing machine shaked too much in our block house at a upper floor:/ Never felt before!!!
  • Kas - I thought my girlfriend was strongly shaking the bed as I was resting. Then I realised it was the whole building.
  • calis turkey - Lasted 5 - 8 seconds. Building shook and ran outside but no damage. Very scary. Sleep tonight?
  • Bitez, Bodrum, Turkey - Wondered which practical joker was shaking my seat until I remembered I was sitting on solid concrete with my back against a 40 year old eucalyptus tree! About 15:50 local time.
  • Gocek Turkey - Water in the swimming pool had enough movement to make waves for some water to exist the pool. There was a small aftershock about 7 minutes later.
  • Bitez, Bodrum, Turkey - Wondered who was shaking my seat, until I remembered my "seat" was a solid block of concrete with my back against a eucalyptus tree!
  • Pefkos, Rhodes - Thought some kid was shaking my sun lounger but in fact everyone was shaking!
  • Kabak - Shook the restaurant and knocked some dishes off shelves. Also felt an aftershock about 10 minutes later.
  • Kos, Greece - Sitting on the pool, I saw the windows of the bar moving... only 10 seconds, but I felt it!
  • Calis, Turkey - Ground shook. Some things fell off shelves or tipped over
  • calıs beach - floor shook people shaken up but all ok
  • Gocek/Fethiye - The strongest one I ever experienced for 7 years here
  • Palmin Hotel Kusadasi - I was taking a dump and de building started to wave slightly. i thought i was sick or sonething and i was imagining it.

  • Dalyan, Turkey - Like others, I thought it was one of my children shaking my sun lounger.
  • Dalaman - was on the balcony having afternoon coffee, had to leave as everything swaying, poolwater was,swaying so violently came over the edge,electric pylons swaying, never felt it like this before also 2 small after shocks
  • Kalkan, Turkey - Sat on the floor in the baby pool and felt the whole pool wobbling for about 5 seconds! Kids were oblivious!!
  • Turgutreis, Turkey - Strong side to side shaking.
  • Calis - Swimming pool made waves, kitchen shook a bit... But all ok.... More wine needed...
  • Oludeniz - Standing on the beeach, heard buildings rattle, people shouting then vibration that lasted around 2 seconds. Very slight rock disturbance on mountain to south of beach.
  • Ovacik Turkey - Earthquake at 3.50pm, at waterpark, lots of crashing and breaking if glass, very scary, many holidaymakers are scared and in shock.
  • Kos island - We were sat on tigaki beach when we felt slight shaking.turkey seemed to be shaking too it felt wierd as it was our first earthquake! It just felt like we were on a moving boat x
  • Ovacik - Was in hotel so ran out to see Elvis the bar tender trying to save his spirits from falling very surreal !!
  • Calis Beach Turkey - Pictures off the walls and shelves lasted about five seconds.
  • Fethiye - I felt like I went light headed, then heard people screaming and I finally realise it was the earth shaking and not my head!
  • Belek, Antalya, Turkey - Ground and building shaking,light fittings shaking too. Unpleasant felt like I was going to pass out.
  • Marmarus - Club Palm hotel. 3rd floor building moderate woble
  • Fethiye - On the beach which shoke from side to side for 10 seconds glasses on table shaking and falling felt like solid ground had turned to a trampoline scary
  • Fethiye - Loud rumbling before the shaking came, lasting several seconds. Brought everyone out of buildings and onto the street.
  • Marmaris - 4th floor of hotel on beach rocked considerably. People in hotel somewhat disturbed
  • Gocek, near Fethie, Turkey - Sitting by swimming pool, felt like a freight train was passing underneat. Pool lapped over pool edge like shore waves. Very scary.
  • Kalkan - Mycar a jeep was shaking strong. The floor of the house was shaking hard. The water clutcht out of te pool Herman Bode Hbode@live.nl
  • Dalaman, Turkey - Sitting quietly enjoying sunshine, when villa started moving and heard rumbling sounds, lasted approx 3/4 secs. Inspected building inside and out, happy to report no cracking or damage. Glad I renewed my DASK and Home Insurance last week though...
  • Icmeler Turkey - Was sitting haveing a coffee and felt everything move. Lasted about 15 seconds, stopped and then a stronger one started and lasted much longer. Could feel movement outside as well.
  • fethiye - Very strong in Karagözler unusual to feel it like that on side of the mountain.. The whole house swayed. Baba Dağ has lost its tip and now has two small peaks instead of one!
  • Hisaronou - Lay on sun lounger when it struck tthough someone was coming up stairs loudly score realizing it was quake. Lasted about ten secs saw a landslide over road and hotel generator kicked in too.felt small aftershock ten mins later. No structural damage to report
  • ovacik - we were sitting around the table and we felt a tremor and a rumbling noise, it got stronger and louder and the walls were shaking and the pictures started falling off the cupboard above us. my dad said get outside so we ran. the pool was sloshing about like it was the sea with moderate waves. this is the strongest one ive ever felt in turkey and ive felt many.
  • Tigaki, Kos - I thought someone was moving the settee and then I saw the lights swaying. I felt very dizzy and then sick after that.
  • Yaniklar - Scary shaking. All animals around go frantic. Felt helpless.
  • Icemeler - Sat in nice quiet village restaurant enjoying lunch, the ground moved for a good few seconds, me and my wife both shot up from our seats very quickly...! No aftershocks so far, the bar owner said it was the largest quake he could remember around here.....
  • Fethiye - Lots of noise, rumbling and several aftershocks. The kids said it was exciting! All went outside the building.
  • Hisoranu turkey - Lasted approx 10-15 seconds...lots of crashing glass and windows and doors shaking...electricity,water off for approx 30 mins....no injuries......cool
  • Hisanario - Laid on sunned round pool sounded like we were on top of a underground station and heard plates smashing inrestaurant and people running everywhere all the while the ground was shaking we just laid there cos we were knackered from our night flight if we had been in the bedroom with my old man it would of been the first time the earth. Moved in 23 yrs
  • Fethiye - We were in the basement haman in our hotel by the Marina. Sat with mud on faces in robes wondering why someone was shaking our chairs so much then realised with the noise that it was an earthquake. Receptionist shouted "out"! But it stopped after a few seconds. Whole marble jacuzzi looked like it was moving across floor, loud shaking noises. Felt definite tremor after and possibly a few others but not sure if just dizzy.

  • ovacik - quite frightening shock. we live on the slopes of Babadağ, and we could see parts of the mountain brake off.... The whole house shook, walls cracked and plasterwork covings broke... This was our first real earthquake we felt here, and we don't like it at all!
  • Linda's-Rhodes island,Greece - I was indoors sitting. No sound with this earthquake. Shaking was noted by all those not sleeping. It did not wake up those sleeping. No objects fell down. No damages reported. No panic also.
  • Rhodes - It was quite scarey, the whole building was moving, first thoughts were to get out.

  • Fethiye - Sitting at computer 1545 local time. First, short building tremble then very strong shaking unable to stand. Period probably 10-15 seconds. Vacated 3 story apartment, all assembled in garden. Women and young children very frightened. Call by official to harbour office - reply - 6.01 richter scale. No local damage, no aftershocks felt yet- 2031 local time.

  • Fethiye - We were swimming in the pool when we heard a rattling sound which was the windows of the apartment blocks around us rattling, then there was a loud roaring noise, like a big wind, but no wind to go with it. The water in the pool started rattling around and slopping out, then it was all over.
  • Turkey, ovacik - Just a small tremor once again.
  • Ovacik, Mugla, Turkey - Earlier today at approx. 12:44 PM sitting downstairs felt a booming in the ears. The walls shook and the tiled floor was moving. The pool outside was splashing like a wave machine. It was a horrific experience. Tonight at approx 21:40 just felt an after shock which was no where near as bad but nevertheless very scary. Took the family outside and waited a while. As yet all OK.
  • Oludeniz, Turkey - By the pool at Mosaik apartments, sunbed shook as if being rocked hard by someone very strong for about 30 seconds, all bottles and glasses in bar rattled. Thunderous roar similar to large juggernaut rumbling out of control. Small aftershock about 20 minutes later. Main occurrence at 3.45pm
  • Marmaris - Fourth floor apartment shook severely, all evening have felt small aftershocks
  • colakli - laying on the beach an felt like someone shaking with my chair
  • Calis Beach - In my third floor hotel room. Violent shaking of the whole building! An experience to say the least!!
  • Antalya - Sat in the sherwood breeze hotel Antalya when I felt the shock in the reception area Paul Marlborough England
  • Norway - Out eating at Ixia (Rhodos) at the time, and it felt as if the restaurant was sliding and bumping along the ground. It was the strangest feeling, very comparable to the passing of heavy traffic.
  • Olu Deniz - We were on the beach
  • Dalyan - Sat out in garden of Villa in Dalyan felt movement like never experienced before. Watched water in pool about to exit. Light fittings swaying. Fruit falling from trees in garden.
  • Uzumlu near Fethiye - Very heavy sofa shifting backwards and forwards, crystal light fitting swinging wildly, china ornament thrown from top shelf, smashing, heavy table top lamp thrown over. Dog water bowl swished empty and patio shaking. Threat of another today oh!
  • Uzumlu, FEthiye - It onlyllasted seconds,seemed much longer. The whole house shook, everything in cupboards rattled. but nothing broken. The cats slept undisturbed but the dog barked furiously for quite a long time. I ran into the garden and could feel the earth still shaking under my feet. There was a second light shock some ten minutes later. It was actually very scary. The mobile network was down but the telephone, ADSL and electricity were uninterrupted.
  • Bodrum - I was indoor and the room was clearly shacking for few seconds
  • Hisaronu Turkey - Was asleep and woke up to the bed shaking, the light swinging and my wardrobe moving from side to side. Was very scary. Lasted about 10 seconds. No damage took place around here but there has been some in Fethiye.
  • Fethiye - We were in the centre of Fethiye walking back from the town beach and didn't notice anything!
  • fethiye - the apartment was like jelly. I grabbed my daughter and ran outside to the road where i felt it was safer. The shaking lasted for about 30 seconds. Photos fell and we have cracks in the balcony posts. Very frightening its the worst i have encountered to date. We are still getting aftershocks a day later
  • Calis - was on the calis high street when the floor started to shake, didnt know what happened until someone shouted EARTHQUAKE (ft labrinth)
  • Hisaronu - we where holidaying in hisaronu, in a villa , we where all getting ready to go out when the villa shook like a fairground fun house for about 30 seconds , we all ran outside where one of our group was still in pool who said the water came up in a mini wave . scary , but to our suprise no damage apart from the electric was out till 21.30 .
  • Oludeniz - We were on holiday in Olu Deniz. We heard a loud rumble and then the earth starting to shake for about 30 seconds,we saw some rocks coming down the mountains but no damage to the resort (as far as I know), some people panicked and left the swimmingpool area, but Turkish staff at Lykia Village were quite calm and the DJ even played 'a whole lotta shaking going on' afterwards! We felt a aftershock at about 20.30
  • Ova Resort - If this lasted any longer it could have been very bad. Girlfriend was in shock. Pool and solid concreate swayed and dipped like it was a sheet of cotton. Q
  • fethiye - terrified!
  • Thirsk - We were laying on Dalckeziz Beach when earth started to shake, followed by very heavy movement. Some people panicked. Lifeguards were blowing whistles yelling "get off the beach!" My intial thought was "Tsunami - get the hell off the beach" (yes I bricked it). A couple of women and children crying and everyone outside shops on mobile phones. Tremors still occuring as we left on Monday afternoon.
  • Oludeniz - Couldn't get over the noise it makes. It starts like a small lawnmower going on and builds from that!! Thought the earth was exploding under my feet. Kept wondering how much louder it would get. I ran down from my balcony out to the reception of my hotel. Maids were running and crying trying to phone family along the coast. I'm glad I stay in Britain, that's a frightening thing with no control buttons!!
  • Kayakoy - Felt the earthquake begin as the ground around the pool shook considerably, screamed at the kids to get out of the villa but couldn't hear my voice above the noise of the quake. Some of the ruins in Kayakoy began to fall and clouds of dust billowed up in the distance. Our villa stood strong & the kids were shaken but OK, the villagers were disturbed by the quake as it was the strongest they had ever experienced. It would be wise for tour operators to give some earthquake info to tourists.
  • Ovacik - Sitting down having a cup of tea on the last day of our holiday in Ovacik and the appartment started to shake violently.Was thrown to the floor as i was trying to get out of the appartment.A very frightening experience indeed and a lovely big bruise on my leg to show for it!!
  • Ovacik, Mugla - bed started to shake strongly. Friends haven't felt anything downstairs...
  • Kabak - Firstloud noise like jet engine I felt like aircraft will crush next to our restourant, didn't expect earthquake in this are. Soon after aftershoc.. When we got the official news that it happens under sea it mekes us worried - now tsunami time? Mountine roads not safafter some rcks start to fooling down and public transport canceled.. Still days after small shakes can be feel..
  • ovacik turkey - sitting inside our villa heard a loud rumbling then the whole floor shook shouted to my wife to get out of the villa swimming pool was like a very rough sea lasted about 30 seconds brought down a power line near villa we have experienced many tremors since the main quake
  • Marmaris Beach - we were Sitting on the beach at the edge of the water when all of a sudden there was a huge rumble and the ground shook badly. My daughter looked at me i thought i was going ill or seeing things as the groung moved. People panicked and jumped up to run. Later everyone very subdued waiting for something else to happen. but all ok in the end.
  • icmeler - sittingby the swimming pool, moving side to side very little. But the guests in our hotel who were on the fourth floor said that things were shaking in their rooms. Wasn't to scary wasn't to sure what was going on at first until someone shouted earthquake.
  • Lindos, Rhodos - Lindos, Rhodes. Lying on a sun bed on the beach. Suddenly I felt the bed shaking - I thought my husband was mucking about, then realised he wasn't touching it. Everyone sat up looking around, wondering what had happened. The sea, which had been flat calm, became choppy.

  • Oludeniz - We were sat at the top terrace at Harry's bar when There was a loud roaring sound like thunder. At first thought it was a fuel tanker coming down the mountain until the top terrace of the bar started swinging side to side and glasses crashed to the floor. Felt very strong and was certain the terrace was going to collapse but the intensity subsided and the whole enounter lasted about 45 seconds.
  • Faliraki, greece - we were stayin in Greece, and was lying on the sun loungers by the pool when they started shaking. we didnt know what was going on, everyone was just looking around trying to figure out what was happening. it was only a few hours later after speaking to locals when we found out about the eathquake in turkey
  • Oladaniz - Lying on beach approximately 4k from centre of quake. Heavy beach sun bed moved down beach for about 1 meter. Very loud deep rumbling noise, looking towards Oladaniz Mountain a very big dust cloud was seen, rocks had fallen from the mountain. Local super markets had most of their stock fall off of the shelves.
  • Dalaman - At the Main shock the Ground seemed to become like jelly - very un-nerving & disorientating.
  • UNITED KINGDOM - Luckily only lasted 40 seconds or so!
  • Turkey - I will be honest never felt so scared in my life,I was sat at a cafe and when the shaking started (before the shaking there was a bang which I think was the electricity tripping)everyone got up and ran to the open road, I just ran with everyone else, not an experience I would ever like to repeat and I really hope it does not effect tourism in Turkey this season. Turkey is such a wonderful country what a shame it is on an earthquake fault line :
  • Hisaronu - (Was in the pool at apartments in Hisaronu, buildings shaking, everyone got out of the pool, surreal and scary experience. Felt lots of aftershocks during the following days.

  • Greece - at first i could only hear a loud rumbling noise but gradually the ground began to shake getting stronger and stronger. i followed everyone else and it turned out ok but i never ever want togo through that experience again.

    MMI III (Weak shaking) ?
    People :
    Felt indoors; hanging objects may swing, vibration similar to passing of light trucks, duration may be estimated, may not be recognized as an earthquake.
    MMI IV (Light shaking) ?
    People :
    Generally noticed indoors but not outside. Light sleepers may be awakened. Vibration may be likened to the passing of heavy traffic, or to the jolt of a heavy object falling or striking the building.
    Fittings :
    Doors and windows rattle. Glassware and crockery rattle. Liquids in open vessels may be slightly disturbed. Standing motorcars may rock.
    Structures :
    Walls and frames of buildings, and partitions and suspended ceilings in commercial buildings, may be heard to creak.
    MMI V (Moderate shaking) ?
    People :
    Generally felt outside, and by almost everyone indoors. Most sleepers awakened. A few people alarmed.
    Fittings :
    Small unstable objects are displaced or upset. Some glassware and crockery may be broken. Hanging pictures knock against the wall. Open doors may swing. Cupboard doors secured by magnetic catches may open. Pendulum clocks stop, start, or change rate.
    Structures :
    Some large display windows cracked. A few earthenware toilet fixtures cracked.
    MMI VI (Strong shaking) ?
    People Felt by all. People and animals alarmed. Many run outside. Difficulty experienced in walking steadily.
    Fittings :
    Objects fall from shelves. Pictures fall from walls. Some furniture moved on smooth floors, some unsecured free-standing fireplaces moved. Glassware and crockery broken. Very unstable furniture overturned. Small church and school bells ring. Appliances move on bench or table tops. Filing cabinets or "easy glide" drawers may open (or shut).
    Structures :
    Slight damage to buildings with low standard. Some stucco or cement plaster falls. Large display windows broken. Damage to a few weak domestic chimneys, some may fall.
    Environment :
    Trees and bushes shake, or are heard to rustle. Loose material may be dislodged from sloping ground, e.g. existing slides, talus slopes, shingle slides.
    MMI VII (Very strong shaking) ?
    People
    General alarm. Difficulty experienced in standing. Noticed by motorcar drivers who may stop.
    Fittings :
    Large bells ring. Furniture moves on smooth floors, may move on carpeted floors. Substantial damage to fragile contents of buildings.
    Structures :
    Unreinforced stone and brick walls cracked. Low standard buildings cracked with some minor masonry falls. A few instances of damage to buildings of ordinary workmanship. Unbraced parapets, unbraced brick gables, and architectural ornaments fall. Roofing tiles, especially ridge tiles may be dislodged. Many unreinforced domestic chimneys damaged, often falling from roof-line. Water tanks Type I burst. A few instances of damage to brick veneers and plaster or cement-based linings. Unrestrained water cylinders (hot-water cylinders) may move and leak. Some common windows cracked. Suspended ceilings damaged.
    Environment :
    Water made turbid by stirred up mud. Small slides such as falls of sand and gravel banks, and small rock-falls from steep slopes and cuttings. Instances of settlement of unconsolidated or wet, or weak soils. Some fine cracks appear in sloping ground. A few instances of liquefaction (i.e. small water and sand ejections).
    MMI VIII (Severe shaking) ?
    People Alarm may approach panic. Steering of motorcars greatly affected. Structures : Low standard buildings heavily damaged, some collapse. ordinary workmanship buildings damaged, some with partial collapse. Reinforced masonry or concrete buildings damaged in some cases. A few instances of damage to buildings and bridges designed and built to resist earthquakes. Monuments and pre-1976 elevated tanks and factory stacks twisted or brought down. Some pre-1965 infill masonry panels damaged. A few post-1980 brick veneers damaged. Decayed timber piles of houses damaged. Houses not secured to foundations may move. Most unreinforced domestic chimneys damaged, some below roof-line, many brought down. Environment : Cracks appear on steep slopes and in wet ground. Small to moderate slides in roadside cuttings and unsupported excavations. Small water and sand ejections and localized lateral spreading adjacent to streams, canals, lakes, etc.
    MMI IX (Violent shaking) ?
    Structures Many low standard buildings destroyed. Ordinary workmanship buildings heavily damaged, some collapse. Reinforced masonry or concrete buildings damaged, some with partial collapse. Buildings and bridges designed and built to resist earthquakes damaged in some cases, some with flexible frames seriously damaged. Damage or permanent distortion to some buildings and bridges, designed and built to normal use standards. Houses not secured to foundations shifted off. Brick veneers fall and expose frames. Environment : Cracking of ground conspicuous. Landsliding general on steep slopes. Liquefaction effects intensified and more widespread, with large lateral spreading and flow sliding adjacent to streams, canals, lakes, etc.
