Moderate earthquake in Canterbury, New Zealand
Epicenter close to Mount Summers, below farming fields.  Focal depth is at a weakening 30 km.
We do not think that this can be called an aftershock of the Christchurch damaging earthquake. Location and depth are very different. GNS Science has received 477 Felt reports so far. 23 reports are mentioning a strong shaking.

Moderately dangerous earthquake in Eastern Kazakhstan
Epicenter is very close to Kokpek  and approx. 40 km from Shonzhy
The epicenter is located in a sparsely populated region. Following the theoretical calculations of USGS; nearly 1000 people will have felt a strong shaking.
The seismological agencies are reporting a Magnitude of M5.7 at a depth in between 10 and 25 km. These parameters are making this earthquake moderately dangerous.
EMSC, USGS and Geofon are more or less locating the same epicenter area (intersection in between A352 and A351 roads).

Epicenter is 148 km (91 miles) E from Almaty where our readers are indicating to have felt a moderate shaking.

Moderate earthquake very close to Sochi, Russia
Epicenter of the earthquake was approx. 20 km out of the coast and only 30 km from Sochi, a Russian Black Sea city with 327,608 inhabitants (latest cencus).  The focal depth has been reported at 10 km. We are convinced that the Sochi people will have felt this earthquake.

Epicenter near Highway 20 in Taitung County. Closest city to the epicenter : Chihshang

Moderate earthquake close to Firuzabad, Iran
Distance from the epicenter to Firuzabad, a town with 66,558 inhabitants (latest census). In Iran, earthquakes start to be dangerous and can cause minor damage from a Magnitude 5, this mainly due to the type of earthquake and the way houses have been build.

  • Almaty - Ninth floor. Damn it was scary.

  • Kazakhstan - Shaked about 15 seconds...very stronger than may 2011...scary...city is calm though...
  • Almaty - 10th floor of apartment building, the EQ woke us adults up, kid remained asleep, oblivious.

  • Almaty - 6th Fl - Started slow and built up to moderate shake. Nothing knocked off walls, ceilings or shelves. No fun.

  • Almaty - I was woken up because my legs were wobbling back and forth as I slept on my stomach, only to find out from the receptionist of the hotel where I am staying that there was an earthquake. I sleep well and to be woken not understanding why my body is being wobbled back and fo rth... it must have been pretty strong. It was 3:25 am in Almaty.
  • Almaty City - I was awake surfing on the internet listening to music when it hit. First thought was there had been an explosion and hadn't heard anything due to the music, but realized it was an earthquake within a second after i removed the headphone. It lasted around 7, 8 seconds(not sure). Have a roommate who was just going to sleep and confirmed with him about the quake. I estimated it to be about M5.

  • Almaty, Samal 2 - Like the other report said. On the 8th floor. It shook the bed hard for about 8 seconds. I knew out was an earthquake.
  • KAZAKHSTAN - I was awaken by a huge shaking and I was going to get my kids to shelter under the table but it subsided. I have never felt I big shake like this.

  • Almaty (oblast) - In less than 5 secs my wife and I had jumped by the baby beds and were ready to run away in the garden. The wooden objects (beds, tables) were shaking moderately strongly. It stopped after 20-30 secs. 3:22 am Almaty time.

  • Almaty - I live in downtown Almaty, woke up around 3:20 from my bed shaking, the cupboards in the bedroom rattling. Sprang up, confused, thinking it was an earthquake and wondering where to go. By the time I had woken up properly it was over. Birds starting chirping outside, otherwise quiet.
  • Almaty, Besagash - I woke up when everything in my room was shaking, the sound of window glass was pretty loud, as fast as I can I jumped down the bed and lay beside it. Although it was strong shaking, nothing had fallen out from its places, and house walls wasn't damaged. I'm not sure about duration of the quake but since the moment I was awaken it lasted for about 5-7 seconds. Didn't sleep for an hour afterwards, waiting for repetition of tremors. Huuugh, it was scary, though!!!
  • Almaty, Kazakhstan - My cat felt it in advance and woke up my Mom. I didn't wake up untill the house started shaking - and it was a long one since I had enough time to wake up and realize what's happening (I usually have a trouble waking up)
  • Almaty - Was awaken by ~15 seconnds of moderate shaking - scary
  • Almaty - On the 9th floor of the Holiday Inn in Almaty. Awoke in the middle of the night thinking there was someone knocking on my door. Got up and realisedthat the shaking was getting worse. The floor was moving, cups were rattling. It lasted maybe 30 seconds in total. It felt like being a bit drunk and not being able to keep your balance quite as well as normal!
  • Almaty - Have woken up two seconds before it hit, first heard the kitchen glass cupboard making noise, then it hit in two waves, first was moderate in my estimation, the second wave was stronger and it woke up my husband. The bed was shaking and the apartment was swaying. Really scary. Was the strongest earthqake I've ever experienced. We live in the 12th floor.
  • InterContinental Almaty - Was asleep at 8th floor when my bed started to shake for about 4-5 seconds

  • Almaty - I was sound asleep and I woke up at about 3:20am local time. I felt a slight vibration and pause and then my house house started shaking. I ran out of my room and with my family began running downstairs. I fell on the stairs due to the house shaking so much. It was even hard to walk. At 3am, all of the dogs in our neighborhood were going crazy. When we went back into our house all of our animals were freaked out.
  • Almaty - 24th floor of Hotel Kazachstan. Woke up around 3.20 at night. Never experienced this before, quite scary for a foreigner alone and for the first time in Almaty.

    People :
    Felt by persons at rest, on upper floors or favorably placed.
    MMI III (Weak shaking) ?
    People :
    Felt indoors; hanging objects may swing, vibration similar to passing of light trucks, duration may be estimated, may not be recognized as an earthquake.
    MMI IV (Light shaking) ?
    People :
    Generally noticed indoors but not outside. Light sleepers may be awakened. Vibration may be likened to the passing of heavy traffic, or to the jolt of a heavy object falling or striking the building.
    Fittings :
    Doors and windows rattle. Glassware and crockery rattle. Liquids in open vessels may be slightly disturbed. Standing motorcars may rock.
    Structures :
    Walls and frames of buildings, and partitions and suspended ceilings in commercial buildings, may be heard to creak.
    MMI V (Moderate shaking) ?
    People :
    Generally felt outside, and by almost everyone indoors. Most sleepers awakened. A few people alarmed.
    Fittings :
    Small unstable objects are displaced or upset. Some glassware and crockery may be broken. Hanging pictures knock against the wall. Open doors may swing. Cupboard doors secured by magnetic catches may open. Pendulum clocks stop, start, or change rate.
    Structures :
    Some large display windows cracked. A few earthenware toilet fixtures cracked.
    MMI VI (Strong shaking) ?
    People Felt by all. People and animals alarmed. Many run outside. Difficulty experienced in walking steadily.
    Fittings :
    Objects fall from shelves. Pictures fall from walls. Some furniture moved on smooth floors, some unsecured free-standing fireplaces moved. Glassware and crockery broken. Very unstable furniture overturned. Small church and school bells ring. Appliances move on bench or table tops. Filing cabinets or "easy glide" drawers may open (or shut).
    Structures :
    Slight damage to buildings with low standard. Some stucco or cement plaster falls. Large display windows broken. Damage to a few weak domestic chimneys, some may fall.
    Environment :
    Trees and bushes shake, or are heard to rustle. Loose material may be dislodged from sloping ground, e.g. existing slides, talus slopes, shingle slides.
    MMI VII (Very strong shaking) ?
    People
    General alarm. Difficulty experienced in standing. Noticed by motorcar drivers who may stop.
    Fittings :
    Large bells ring. Furniture moves on smooth floors, may move on carpeted floors. Substantial damage to fragile contents of buildings.
    Structures :
    Unreinforced stone and brick walls cracked. Low standard buildings cracked with some minor masonry falls. A few instances of damage to buildings of ordinary workmanship. Unbraced parapets, unbraced brick gables, and architectural ornaments fall. Roofing tiles, especially ridge tiles may be dislodged. Many unreinforced domestic chimneys damaged, often falling from roof-line. Water tanks Type I burst. A few instances of damage to brick veneers and plaster or cement-based linings. Unrestrained water cylinders (hot-water cylinders) may move and leak. Some common windows cracked. Suspended ceilings damaged.
    Environment :
    Water made turbid by stirred up mud. Small slides such as falls of sand and gravel banks, and small rock-falls from steep slopes and cuttings. Instances of settlement of unconsolidated or wet, or weak soils. Some fine cracks appear in sloping ground. A few instances of liquefaction (i.e. small water and sand ejections).
    MMI VIII (Severe shaking) ?
    People Alarm may approach panic. Steering of motorcars greatly affected. Structures : Low standard buildings heavily damaged, some collapse. ordinary workmanship buildings damaged, some with partial collapse. Reinforced masonry or concrete buildings damaged in some cases. A few instances of damage to buildings and bridges designed and built to resist earthquakes. Monuments and pre-1976 elevated tanks and factory stacks twisted or brought down. Some pre-1965 infill masonry panels damaged. A few post-1980 brick veneers damaged. Decayed timber piles of houses damaged. Houses not secured to foundations may move. Most unreinforced domestic chimneys damaged, some below roof-line, many brought down. Environment : Cracks appear on steep slopes and in wet ground. Small to moderate slides in roadside cuttings and unsupported excavations. Small water and sand ejections and localized lateral spreading adjacent to streams, canals, lakes, etc.
    MMI IX (Violent shaking) ?
    Structures Many low standard buildings destroyed. Ordinary workmanship buildings heavily damaged, some collapse. Reinforced masonry or concrete buildings damaged, some with partial collapse. Buildings and bridges designed and built to resist earthquakes damaged in some cases, some with flexible frames seriously damaged. Damage or permanent distortion to some buildings and bridges, designed and built to normal use standards. Houses not secured to foundations shifted off. Brick veneers fall and expose frames. Environment : Cracking of ground conspicuous. Landsliding general on steep slopes. Liquefaction effects intensified and more widespread, with large lateral spreading and flow sliding adjacent to streams, canals, lakes, etc.
