Strong deep earthquake in the greater Tonga area
A strong Magnitude, but at a depth of 200 km it will only be felt as a weak shaking at maximum
Moderate earthquake near the Malaysia coast
Unusual location for this moderate earthquake.
EMSC locates the epicenter at 31 km S Lahad datu (pop 105,622). The epicenter of the earthquake was located in the sea following EMSC. MET Malaysia however is putting the earthquake location 11 km West of Kunak.
The tremors were felt in Kunak, Tawau and Sandakan. MET Malaysia is reporting a M4.4 Magnitude .
Moderate earthquake at intermediate depth in Japan
JMA Japan reports a max. intensity of 4 (ER considers 5+ as a potentially dangerous earthquake) (Scale 0 to 7).
Epicenter close to Kashiwa and Narita and also fairly close to Tokyo. The earthquake has been well felt in a wide radius because of the depth of 80 km.
the earthquake occurred at 01:36 AM Tokyo time!
Update 17:07 UTC : JMA 4 intensity shaking at Tokyo Taito-ku Senzoku*, Tokyo Sumida-ku Higashi-mukojima*, Tokyo Koto-ku Shiohama* and Tokyo Shibuya-ku Hommachi*
Harmless very strong earthquake in Argentina
A very strong earthquake occurred in the Santiago del Estero region in Argentina. What looks as a spectacular magnitude has been weakened tremendously by the depth of the is earthquake (close to 600 km). Because of this hypocenter (depth in the hot solid mantle of the earth), the shaking will have been extremely weak. People in this Argentine province are used to earthquakes and a lot of them will have hardly noticed it.
Moderate earthquake close to Tangshan, China
USGS reports M 4.7 earthquake in the bordering area between a Tangshan City district and Luanxian County in Hebei. Based on the earthquake parameters the earthquake must have been felt as far as Beijing. See epicenter map below.
Update 05:43 UTC : epicenter of the earthquake was less than 10 km from Luanxian. As can be read in the Experience reports below, the earthquake was also felt in Tianjin and Beijing, 2 megacities in Chine. This is the second earthquake being felt in Beijing in only a couple of months!
Update 05:56 UTC : According to the first reports from the Hebei Seismological Bureau, who went to the epicenter area asap, there are no reports of damage or injuries so far.
Update 14:50 UTC : After inspecting the epicenter and surrounding areas (Chinese seismological services are very specialized in earthquake response) no injured have been reported and 2 houses have been found with cracks in the walls. Chinese seismological services have told the local press that today’s earthquake is an aftershock of the M7.8 1976 Tangshan earthquake. This earthquake was believed to be the the largest earthquake of the 20th century by death toll. 240,000 to 255,000 people have lost their life during this earthquake!

Useful information to read this daily earthquake list
This earthquake list covers important earthquakes in the world.
If a more detailed page is present, the earthquake line will be linked to the detailed page.
For your comfort, we will provide in most cases a Google Satellite Map to give you an idea where the earthquake struck, which terrain it happened and if villages or cities are located in the immediate vicinity. The multi-source approach has been setup to compare values as seismology is not an exact science and needs a lot of calculations. The reference for the time zone is UTC (Coordinated Universal Time, also called GMT). Color explanation if we add some details above the list :
green color = NOT dangerous for damage or injuries
orange color = MODERATE risk for damage or injuries
red color = CONSIDERABLE risk for damage or injuries
QuakeSOS+ and QuakeSOS free are iPhone applications developed by Armand Vervaeck, the founder of Earthquake Report. The Application simplifies immediate group communication to friends and family members (with your exact GPS location) and is feeding the users with Earthquake Report news. The 0.99 US$ QuakeSOS+ version will support the activities of SOS Earthquakes.
