Strong aftershock in Azerbaijan
Probably the second strongest aftershock so far after the M5.7 mainshock on May 7, 2012. Epicenter was also this time very close to Zagatala. The earthquake was felt as far as Tbilissi, Georgia.  We dot expect this aftershock to be very damaging, but minor damage on top of the already damaged houses is a real possibility.

Algeria earthquake
The earthquake is very shallow (if preliminary data will be confirmed). Epicenter is approx. 20 km from Brida and approx. 30 km from Aflou.  Brida has a population of 5,742 (1998 cencus) and Aflou has a population of 48,000 inhabitants. Earthquake-Report.com has no certainty at all about the faith of this 2 villages.  The epicenter location given by seismological agencies has almost always an error margin of +10 km. We do not see major problems if the epicenter will be confirmed where it is located now, but when closer to one of both villages or towns,  damage cannot be excluded.
- The earthquake happened in the Sahara Atlas at a approx. altitude of 1,400 meter.
Update 13:39 UTC : EMSC has changed its parameters from M5.1 to M4.7 and from a depth of 2 km to a depth of 5 km. These latest values are far better (less dangerous) than the initial ones.

Moderate earthquake relatively close to Kabul, Afghanistan
The epicenter of this earthquake was only at 38 km from Afghanistan. EMSC and USGS data versions are completely different in focal depth at the time of writing (13:25 UTC).  EMSC reports a depth of 80 km and USGS a depth of 10 km. This kind of difference in focal depth is almost like early morning and sunset !

Moderate earthquake shakes the interior of Honshu, Japan
We have a sudden surge in people from Japan, which indicates mostly an earthquake
We have NO earthquake data yet, but max. JMA intensity is 4 so far.
- The epicenter of this earthquake was in between Sano and Tsukuba, inland. The depth of the hypocenter makes it a far away felt earthquake. The way people felt this earthquake is another proof that similar magnitudes and similar depths are being felt completely different from one area to another.
- The earthquake has been well felt in Tokyo too (see experience reports).
- JMA 4 intensity (scale from 0 to 7) at Ibaraki-ken Nambu, Tochigi-ken Nambu, Saitama-ken Hokubu and Saitama-ken Nambu. Earthquake-report.com uses 5+ as a potentially damaging intensity. The greater Tokyo area was reported as a JMA 3 intensity

Strong (harmless) earthquake off the coast of Chile
The epicenter was located at more than 500 km out of the coast.  The Magnitude is totally harmless to generate a tsunami.  The hypocenter depth is 10 km and indicates that the earthquake was generated by tensions in a separating oceanic plate (separating Nazca and Antarctic plates area).  The satellite map below shows the dividing area very well.

  • Tbilisi - I felt it while was home, at 6 floor in a 10 years old building. No damage, just the glass shaking on the table.

  • Kawaguchi-shi, Saitama - Quite strong shaking for about 15-20 seconds, and the shaking varied in intensity in easily discernible waves.
  • Ikebukuro Tokyo Japan - Felt as strong shaking here in Ikebukuro Tokyo Japan
  • Tochigi-Ken, Oyama-Shi - Really strong shaking at first, that eased up a bit, but was still pretty strong.
  • Nihon Bashi, Tokyo - On the 5th floor quite strong shaking for 15-20 seconds in all directions.
  • Shinjuku Japan - In a hotel, on the 33rd floor, felt room move along with walls creaking. Wasn't sure if it was an earthquake, since it seem the building sways at this height.
  • Otamachi Tokyo Japan - Fluctuation shakes several times.
  • Yokohama-shi - Chair was moving around while sitting.

  • Lake Chapala area - We live southeast of Guadalajara about 10 kilometers west of Ajijic on lake Chapala. I was awakened by the rumble -- sounded like a heavy truck and the house shook for 4-5 seconds. I would not have identified it as an earthquake, but my husband had lived in Los Angeles for 20 years, so he recognized it as an earthquake.
  • Ajijic, Jalisco, Mexico - Very brief but noisy, could hear it coming. Around 10:03? p.m. Central time on 5/17/12.
  • Ajijic, Jalisco, Mexico - Just after 10 PM CDT, I was working at my computer and suddenly the whole house shook--didn't last long, but was pretty strong for a second or two.
  • Guadalajara Jalisco - I was sitting.. quietly, so I could feel it.. I also thought it was a heavy truck.. 22:05 approximately... and last 2-3 seconds
  • San Juan Cosala, Jalisco - We live between Ajijic and Jocotepec on Lake Chapala. Just after 10 pm, we heard a fairly loud reverberating sound then the whole house shook. It didn't last very long, just a few seconds, and we realized that it must be an earthquake. There wasn't any damage but it sure was scary.
  • SAN JUAN COSALÁ - I HAVE EXPERIENCED MANY EARTHQUAKES SINCE I HAVE LIVED IN MEXICO (60 YEARS), BUT NOT AS FRIGHTENING AS THE VERY NOISY ONE THAT FRIGHTENED US LAST THURSDAY, MAY 17TH AT AROUND 10 PM.
  • Ajijic, Jalisco, Mexico - Heard very loud "explosion" with 1 second very hard "jolt"..supposedly a 4.2 mag quake 6 kilom (3.5 miles) north of Jocotopec, Jalisco, Mexico (about8 miles west my location. Now many are reporting strong smell of sulfur after quake. Quake felt communities on Lake Chapala shore.Very strong Jocotopec. Concerned about sulfur smell...this is volcanic area. Please respond to me.
  • Zapopan, Jalisco - Was lying on the couch when I felt a slow rolling motion (like the Michacan quake on April 11th) which lasted about 10 seconds. When I stood up, the light fixtures began to sway and I could feel the ground movement for another 10 seconds or so. It seems I'm one of the only few people in my area who felt it.

    People :
    Felt indoors; hanging objects may swing, vibration similar to passing of light trucks, duration may be estimated, may not be recognized as an earthquake.
    MMI IV (Light shaking) ?
    People :
    Generally noticed indoors but not outside. Light sleepers may be awakened. Vibration may be likened to the passing of heavy traffic, or to the jolt of a heavy object falling or striking the building.
    Fittings :
    Doors and windows rattle. Glassware and crockery rattle. Liquids in open vessels may be slightly disturbed. Standing motorcars may rock.
    Structures :
    Walls and frames of buildings, and partitions and suspended ceilings in commercial buildings, may be heard to creak.
    MMI V (Moderate shaking) ?
    People :
    Generally felt outside, and by almost everyone indoors. Most sleepers awakened. A few people alarmed.
    Fittings :
    Small unstable objects are displaced or upset. Some glassware and crockery may be broken. Hanging pictures knock against the wall. Open doors may swing. Cupboard doors secured by magnetic catches may open. Pendulum clocks stop, start, or change rate.
    Structures :
    Some large display windows cracked. A few earthenware toilet fixtures cracked.
    MMI VI (Strong shaking) ?
    People Felt by all. People and animals alarmed. Many run outside. Difficulty experienced in walking steadily.
    Fittings :
    Objects fall from shelves. Pictures fall from walls. Some furniture moved on smooth floors, some unsecured free-standing fireplaces moved. Glassware and crockery broken. Very unstable furniture overturned. Small church and school bells ring. Appliances move on bench or table tops. Filing cabinets or "easy glide" drawers may open (or shut).
    Structures :
    Slight damage to buildings with low standard. Some stucco or cement plaster falls. Large display windows broken. Damage to a few weak domestic chimneys, some may fall.
    Environment :
    Trees and bushes shake, or are heard to rustle. Loose material may be dislodged from sloping ground, e.g. existing slides, talus slopes, shingle slides.
    MMI VII (Very strong shaking) ?
    People
    General alarm. Difficulty experienced in standing. Noticed by motorcar drivers who may stop.
    Fittings :
    Large bells ring. Furniture moves on smooth floors, may move on carpeted floors. Substantial damage to fragile contents of buildings.
    Structures :
    Unreinforced stone and brick walls cracked. Low standard buildings cracked with some minor masonry falls. A few instances of damage to buildings of ordinary workmanship. Unbraced parapets, unbraced brick gables, and architectural ornaments fall. Roofing tiles, especially ridge tiles may be dislodged. Many unreinforced domestic chimneys damaged, often falling from roof-line. Water tanks Type I burst. A few instances of damage to brick veneers and plaster or cement-based linings. Unrestrained water cylinders (hot-water cylinders) may move and leak. Some common windows cracked. Suspended ceilings damaged.
    Environment :
    Water made turbid by stirred up mud. Small slides such as falls of sand and gravel banks, and small rock-falls from steep slopes and cuttings. Instances of settlement of unconsolidated or wet, or weak soils. Some fine cracks appear in sloping ground. A few instances of liquefaction (i.e. small water and sand ejections).
    MMI VIII (Severe shaking) ?
    People Alarm may approach panic. Steering of motorcars greatly affected. Structures : Low standard buildings heavily damaged, some collapse. ordinary workmanship buildings damaged, some with partial collapse. Reinforced masonry or concrete buildings damaged in some cases. A few instances of damage to buildings and bridges designed and built to resist earthquakes. Monuments and pre-1976 elevated tanks and factory stacks twisted or brought down. Some pre-1965 infill masonry panels damaged. A few post-1980 brick veneers damaged. Decayed timber piles of houses damaged. Houses not secured to foundations may move. Most unreinforced domestic chimneys damaged, some below roof-line, many brought down. Environment : Cracks appear on steep slopes and in wet ground. Small to moderate slides in roadside cuttings and unsupported excavations. Small water and sand ejections and localized lateral spreading adjacent to streams, canals, lakes, etc.
    MMI IX (Violent shaking) ?
    Structures Many low standard buildings destroyed. Ordinary workmanship buildings heavily damaged, some collapse. Reinforced masonry or concrete buildings damaged, some with partial collapse. Buildings and bridges designed and built to resist earthquakes damaged in some cases, some with flexible frames seriously damaged. Damage or permanent distortion to some buildings and bridges, designed and built to normal use standards. Houses not secured to foundations shifted off. Brick veneers fall and expose frames. Environment : Cracking of ground conspicuous. Landsliding general on steep slopes. Liquefaction effects intensified and more widespread, with large lateral spreading and flow sliding adjacent to streams, canals, lakes, etc.
