Wrong earthquake data Sichuan earthquake?
EMSC Western Sichuan, China Apr 14 20:31 PM 4.9 40.0
USGS Western Sichuan, China Apr 14 20:31 PM 4.9 20.7
The above values are both listed in our today’s earthquake list.
CEN, the Chinese Seismological Agency has reported this earthquake with a Magnitude of 3.7 !
VANUATU M6.5 Earthquake
A very strong earthquake with a preliminary Magnitude of 6.6 occurred 73 km from from Isangel, Vanuatu (All data are still preliminary). We do not expect any danger for damage or injuries because of this earthquake
NOAA report just in (22:19 UTC) : …A STRONG EARTHQUAKE HAS OCCURRED BUT A TSUNAMI IS NOT EXPECTED ALONG THE CALIFORNIA/ OREGON/ WASHINGTON/ BRITISH COLUMBIA OR ALASKA COASTS… NO WARNING… NO WATCH AND NO ADVISORY IS IN EFFECT FOR THESE AREAS.
BASED ON THE EARTHQUAKE MAGNITUDE… LOCATION AND HISTORIC TSUNAMI RECORDS A DAMAGING TSUNAMI IS NOT EXPECTED ALONG THE CALIFORNIA/ OREGON/ WASHINGTON/ BRITISH COLUMBIA AND ALASKA COASTS.
Earthquake-Report.com does not expect that a tsunami has been generated by this earthquake. Local stronger waves are however always possible.
Update 22:22 UTC : – Early reports of EMSC states a Magnitude of 6.6 at a depth of 6 km. GFZ reports 6.4 at a dept of 10 km (all preliminary values).
- The earthquake may have been felt also in neighboring New Caledonia
- USGS has recalculated data and reports now a M6.5 at a depth of 9 km. The epicenter has been recalculated at 79 km from Isangel.
Update 22:36 UTC : Following the GDACS calculation there are NO people living within a radius of 20 km. In a 50 km radius the population is 5,836.
Update 22:38 UTC : USGS predicts that approx. 4,000 people will have experienced a very strong shaking. 21,000 people a strong MMI VI shaking and 59,000 people a moderate shaking. As people in this area of the world are used to very strong to even massive earthquakes, earthquake-report.com still believes that there will be NO serious damage or injuries.
Update 22:43 UTC : we have removed the tsunami data and map as the dates were wrong. The linked GDACS page went into an error afterwards.
Update 23:20 UTC : Just like in most cases of the very strong earthquakes, aftershocks are beginning to strike the area
M 5.9 2012/04/14 19:26 Depth 49.0 km SUNDA STRAIT, JAVA, INDONESIA
02:26:42 AM at epicenter – Epicenter location see below in list
Strong nightly earthquake far enough out of the coast and also deep enough to be harmless for the islands of Java and Sumatra. USGS has calculated that approx. 150,000 people will experience a moderate shaking (MMI V).
120 km (74 miles) SW of Cilegon, Java, Indonesia
M5.5-M6.0 2012/04/14 15:13 Depth 62.5 km KURIL ISLANDS
Magnitudes are varying in between the seismological agencies. Epicenter approx. 50 km from volcanic island Onekotan. Hypocenter at intermediate depth = no danger
2 very strong earthquakes in between Argentina and Antarctica (Drake Passage)
2 earthquakes with (preliminary) magnitudes of 6.1 and 6.6 just happened in the Drake passage. Preliminary distance to Ushuaia : 356 km. ER calls this earthquake NOT dangerous and the earthquake is to weak to have a tsunami potential. The 2 earthquakes occurred with an interval of 20 seconds.
Update 11:15 UTC : Both earthquakes (17 seconds interval) have been recalculated as M6.1 quakes
2 not listed earthquakes in India
2 moderate earthquakes, measuring 4.5 and 4.9 on the Richter scale, shook Gujarat and Maharashtra on Saturday, an Indian weather official said. As our earthquake database is automatic and as the main international seismological agencies have not reported the quakes yet, we have bundled the India experiences on the “Off West Coast Of Northern Sumatra Apr 14 02:04 AM” information. As soon as one of the agencies is reporting the earthquake (what normally should have been detected long time at this Magnitude) we will move the experiences below the
We have received a big number experience reports from India.
We will report with more details as soon as the official agencies will report on it.
Most of the reports are arriving from Goa, Pune and Mumbai.
The people sending in reports are talking about light short vibrations
Update with some more details (07:35 UTC) : An earthquake measuring 4.9 on Richter scale shook the western part of India around 11 am IST. Another earthquake measuring 4.5 on Ritcher scale struck Bhuj in Kutch district of Gujarat at 8.53 am. In the second tremor, which struck Maharashtra, several parts of Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Satara, Pune and surroundings were shaken. The epicenter of the second quake was felt in the Satara distrct of Western Maharashtra. Based on the experience of ER, but lacking more details like the depth of the hypocenter), we do not expect serious damage or injuries from this earthquake although Indian houses are very earthquake vulnerable (part of the information courtesy mid-day.com).
Update 08:17 UTC : EMSC and USGS have not reported what we think is the first of the 2 quakes. We have moved all India Earthquake Experience Reports to the new India input.

Earthquakes occurred yesterday (UTC time), but today local time
Still many aftershocks in the Indian Ocean West of Northern Sumatra
Useful information to read this daily earthquake list
This earthquake list covers important earthquakes in the world.
If a more detailed page is present, the earthquake line will be linked to the detailed page.
For your comfort, we will provide in most cases a Google Satellite Map to give you an idea where the earthquake struck, which terrain it happened and if villages or cities are located in the immediate vicinity. The multi-source approach has been setup to compare values as seismology is not an exact science and needs a lot of calculations. The reference for the time zone is UTC (Coordinated Universal Time, also called GMT). Color explanation if we add some details above the list :
green color = NOT dangerous for damage or injuries
orange color = MODERATE risk for damage or injuries
red color = CONSIDERABLE risk for damage or injuries
QuakeSOS+ and QuakeSOS free are iPhone applications developed by Armand Vervaeck, the founder of Earthquake Report. The Application simplifies immediate group communication to friends and family members (with your exact GPS location) and is feeding the users with Earthquake Report news. The 0.99 US$ QuakeSOS+ version will support the activities of SOS Earthquakes.
