M 6.7 2012/03/21 22:15 Depth 144.8 km NEW GUINEA, PAPUA NEW GUINEA
Local time : Thursday, March 22, 2012 at 08:15:05 AM at epicenter
Not dangerous if the depth remains at +100 km
Preliminary values are mentioning a Magnitude of 6.7
Update 22:51 UTC : USGS has updated the above depth to 105.9 km, still acceptable for PNG (acceptable in this case is that Earthquake-Report does not expect that this earthquake would generate serious damage except for the risk on landslides).
The greatest danger for Papua New Guinea is landslides as the mountainous country in combination with rain-forest can create serious landslides
Update 22:51 UTC : USGS has calculated that 147,000 people will experience a strong shaking and that more than 1 million people will have felt a moderate shaking.
Update 22:57 UTC : The locations above the epicenter are not that important for deep earthquakes which occur in the hot solid mantle of the island. The radius that the shaking will be felt the same is far greater than with shallower earthquakes. NO tsunami risk as the epicenter is below land.
The epicenter area is just below one of the (only) reasonable roads of the island. Lae and Madang are the main cities but the shaking will not be strong enough to damage houses and buildings in both sities.
The closest village to the epicenter is Kainantu (8,509 inhabitants). The biggest city close to the epicenter is Goroka (18,503 people). Goroka is the capital of the Eastern Highlands Province and is situated at an altitude of 1,600 meter. The epicenter is (following USGS) right below the Highlands Highway
Update 23:17 UTC : I Have Felt it reports received by Earthquake-Report.com are mentioning the same MMI values than predicted by USGS.
Update 23:33 UTC : Close to the epicenter is the Yonki Dam. Yonki Dam is an earth-fill embankment dam over the Ramu River that supports the Ramu 1 hydroelectric power plant and the (under construction) Yonki Toe of Dam power plant Yonki Dam is located in the Eastern Highlands Province of Papua New Guinea.

Useful information to read this daily earthquake list
This earthquake list covers important earthquakes in the world.
If a more detailed page is present, the earthquake line will be linked to the detailed page.
For your comfort, we will provide in most cases a Google Satellite Map to give you an idea where the earthquake struck, which terrain it happened and if villages or cities are located in the immediate vicinity. The multi-source approach has been setup to compare values as seismology is not an exact science and needs a lot of calculations. The reference for the time zone is UTC (Coordinated Universal Time, also called GMT). Color explanation if we add some details above the list :
green color = NOT dangerous for damage or injuries
orange color = MODERATE risk for damage or injuries
red color = CONSIDERABLE risk for damage or injuries
QuakeSOS+ and QuakeSOS free are iPhone applications developed by Armand Vervaeck, the founder of Earthquake Report. The Application simplifies immediate group communication to friends and family members (with your exact GPS location) and is feeding the users with Earthquake Report news. The 0.99 US$ QuakeSOS+ version will support the activities of SOS Earthquakes.
