  • chiredzi - I was lying on my bed and l felt the bed and walls shaking for about less than a minute or just one minute
  • Chiredzi - Shaking was strong enough to wake me up
  • Mutare - Felt it whilst trying to sleep. The bed moved and windows rattled a little. Could hear the noise for many minutes after the shake.
  • Bikita, Masvingo - Just heard a rumbling noise but since rarely any transport travels at that time in my location I wondered what it was. Then I remembered some tremor experience around 2006 and I thought it might be a tremor but dismissed it since I felt no unusual movements. I was surprised to hear reports of the tremors/earthquake this morning and then I realised that I had not been mistaken. I have not noticed any damage yet and do not think there was any.
  • harare - I noticed lights (shadrelas) hanging in my bedroom shaking for about half a minute and told my wife it can only be because of an earthquake because I once experienced the same before. No damage
  • Chipinge town - No property was damaged but I felt like a big thing is walking outside since the roof was shaking the vibrating. I saw keys hanging on the door moving to and fro. The moment i picked it was an earthquake,i tried to ran out of the room but could not go outside because my neighbours dogs were going crazy barking and running all over the place. Its was 22:05 I estimated it lasted for about 5 seconds.Inotyisa!
  • Chisumbanje - No damage
  • Chikombedzi - It was like a huge truck moving close to the house causing vibrations of the roof

  • Lusaka - Scary stuff.
  • lusaka - Well, just felt it but it left no damage.everything is just as it was.it caught me awake though on the bed;it woke up my partner so we talked abt the experience.i was a bit scared though!but at the sametime felt lucky...i dont remembr well the last time i felt it,so its a wonderful experience.
  • Lusaka - Woken up by my wife in the early hours of Saturday, 9 Jan 2016. Weak vibrations. I could hear it more than feel it. Having experienced a much more significant (M7 +) and violent quake in Indonesia a few years ago, this one did not scare me one bit. More worried about the existing cracks that may be worsened on the the walls of our Lake Kariba hydro power dam!
  • Lusaka - Estavamos a dormir e acordamos, tudo tremia. Ja é o 2° que sinto, o 1° foi em Lisboa. Sao sempre momentos assustadores e longos!
  • Lusaka - I first heard some noise, thought it was just wind blowing eventually I felt vibrations that were accompanied by noise of things shaking in the house. The vibrations lasted between 2-3 minutes.
  • Lusaka - My wife and I were awake and the shaking began. She asked me what the sound was and I thought a truck was passing by our house. I literally opened the window to check if that was the case. Though, I would be surprised if a truck would pass by our house so early since we stay in a residential area. The sound remained for a while then stopped.
  • Lusaka - My wife and I were awake at the time for early morning prayers. As we heard the sound we wondered what it was. It sounded like a truck passing by and I literally drew the curtain to check though I would have been surprised if it was a truck as it is a residential area. Then when we realised that the sound was 'all-encompassing' we realised it was something else.
  • Lusaka - No property damage. Felt ground vibrations.
  • Lusaka - Vibration in the house started praying

  • Lusaka - No damage of anything that I am aware of
  • Mazabuka - It was just some strong vibrations, nothing was damaged but da vibrations were so loud. It was on 9th January at 05:05 and it lasted for 2 to 3 mins.
  • Lusaka - I thought I was dreaming woke up my hubby but he didnt feel it and concluded I probably heard a truck passing. No damage to property
  • Lusaka - My wife had to wake me up and we hurried downstairs. There was A deep grumbling sound, similar to a construction vehicle (road roller) passing. Unusual as the house is 30 metres from the road. The rumbling sound did not change pitch or volume. No damage. 'It was a giant' according to our son. The last earthquake shook the house, this one did not.
  • Lusaka - Windows started rattling around 05AM,the rumbling sound and vibrations got a bit intense that we almost jumped out of bed! It eventually subsided, nothing was damaged
  • Mazabuka. - It was such a great experience But not friendly. I felt my bed moving and like the house was gona fall on me!
  • Lusaka - I was awake when it all happened. first thought it was a truck in our neighbour's yard. Then I heard then I heard our reservoir tank shaking, the house shook as well and my bed. it took bout 2-3 minutes for the vibrations to stop. It was really horrifying moment, but at the same time wonderful experience, because I have learnt about earth quakes at school in one of my courses. when I become a geologist I will go there to carry out a research.

MMI II (Very weak shaking) ?
    People :
Felt by persons at rest, on upper floors or favorably placed.
    MMI III (Weak shaking) ?
    People :
Felt indoors; hanging objects may swing, vibration similar to passing of light trucks, duration may be estimated, may not be recognized as an earthquake.
    MMI IV (Light shaking) ?
    People :
Generally noticed indoors but not outside. Light sleepers may be awakened. Vibration may be likened to the passing of heavy traffic, or to the jolt of a heavy object falling or striking the building.
    Fittings :
Doors and windows rattle. Glassware and crockery rattle. Liquids in open vessels may be slightly disturbed. Standing motorcars may rock.
    Structures :
Walls and frames of buildings, and partitions and suspended ceilings in commercial buildings, may be heard to creak.
    MMI V (Moderate shaking) ?
    People :
Generally felt outside, and by almost everyone indoors. Most sleepers awakened. A few people alarmed.
    Fittings :
Small unstable objects are displaced or upset. Some glassware and crockery may be broken. Hanging pictures knock against the wall. Open doors may swing. Cupboard doors secured by magnetic catches may open. Pendulum clocks stop, start, or change rate.
    Structures :
Some large display windows cracked. A few earthenware toilet fixtures cracked.
    MMI VI (Strong shaking) ?
People Felt by all. People and animals alarmed. Many run outside. Difficulty experienced in walking steadily.
    Fittings :
Objects fall from shelves. Pictures fall from walls. Some furniture moved on smooth floors, some unsecured free-standing fireplaces moved. Glassware and crockery broken. Very unstable furniture overturned. Small church and school bells ring. Appliances move on bench or table tops. Filing cabinets or "easy glide" drawers may open (or shut).
    Structures :
Slight damage to buildings with low standard. Some stucco or cement plaster falls. Large display windows broken. Damage to a few weak domestic chimneys, some may fall.
    Environment :
Trees and bushes shake, or are heard to rustle. Loose material may be dislodged from sloping ground, e.g. existing slides, talus slopes, shingle slides.
MMI VII (Very strong shaking) ?
General alarm. Difficulty experienced in standing. Noticed by motorcar drivers who may stop.
    Fittings :
Large bells ring. Furniture moves on smooth floors, may move on carpeted floors. Substantial damage to fragile contents of buildings.
    Structures :
Unreinforced stone and brick walls cracked. Low standard buildings cracked with some minor masonry falls. A few instances of damage to buildings of ordinary workmanship. Unbraced parapets, unbraced brick gables, and architectural ornaments fall. Roofing tiles, especially ridge tiles may be dislodged. Many unreinforced domestic chimneys damaged, often falling from roof-line. Water tanks Type I burst. A few instances of damage to brick veneers and plaster or cement-based linings. Unrestrained water cylinders (hot-water cylinders) may move and leak. Some common windows cracked. Suspended ceilings damaged.
    Environment :
Water made turbid by stirred up mud. Small slides such as falls of sand and gravel banks, and small rock-falls from steep slopes and cuttings. Instances of settlement of unconsolidated or wet, or weak soils. Some fine cracks appear in sloping ground. A few instances of liquefaction (i.e. small water and sand ejections).

Structures : Low standard buildings heavily damaged, some collapse. ordinary workmanship buildings damaged, some with partial collapse. Reinforced masonry or concrete buildings damaged in some cases. A few instances of damage to buildings and bridges designed and built to resist earthquakes. Monuments and pre-1976 elevated tanks and factory stacks twisted or brought down. Some pre-1965 infill masonry panels damaged. A few post-1980 brick veneers damaged. Decayed timber piles of houses damaged. Houses not secured to foundations may move. Most unreinforced domestic chimneys damaged, some below roof-line, many brought down. Environment : Cracks appear on steep slopes and in wet ground. Small to moderate slides in roadside cuttings and unsupported excavations. Small water and sand ejections and localized lateral spreading adjacent to streams, canals, lakes, etc.
    MMI IX (Violent shaking) ?
