  • Kigali - Felt the sound and vibration like a passing train, loud outcry of wild birds on the trees, at 3:25am local time and a weaker one 2-3 minutes after.
  • Lake Kivu - Scary but we are in an isolated place by the lake and there's little around us. Two earthquakes, the first strong and longer and the second lighter
  • Huye - 7/8/015 around 03:30 am. It was amazing to feel my bed"dancing". If wake up and realized that it was the whole building that was shaking. It happened 2 times.I was caught by fear! It lasted around 10 to 20sec. I didn't find time to run away!
  • Kigali - strong shaking, no damage here.

  • Huye - At first it was so strong and took about 2', after 3' it came back weak and took about 10 seconds. My first ever terrifying earthquake coz am 28.

  • Karongi - I felt the first tremor (MMI IV) at 3.27am local time. It lasted for about 45-seconds. The second tremor (MMI IV), of almost the same strength, hit at 3.30am and lasted 30-seconds. The third (MMI II) hit at 3.52am and lasted about 10-seconds.

  • Kigali - Woke up to slight shaking. Other people in the house said they felt three tremors
  • Kigali - Felt the first one at exactly 03:26 then a second one shortly after 2 mins and a Third onewhic was a weak. The first was stronger and lasted longer. No damages.
  • Kicukiro- Kigali - Was a very serious earthquake I felt 3 times this night in kicukiro area, Kigali, Rwanda.
  • Gacuriro - I woke up cause my bed was shaking and the doors were rattling.
  • Ruhango - I felt it 2 times, the first time was at 3:28am and it was strong but the second was not strong around 3:32
  • Kigali - First one Strong shaking almost running from the house,2nd minor and wasn't sure there will be no third one.

  • Kigali - we woke up from the noise the roof was making and our bed shaking. felt three shocks in total.
  • Butare - I was awakened by my bed movements, and the house shaking in the ceiling. I quickly understood it was an earthquake. I woke up, looked through the window, and found everything in the village was calm. Suddenly, there was a power cut, but the electricity was back five minutes later. There were about three aftershocks, before everything was normal again. Media report three children died in DR Congo (2 children died when their house fell on them in their sleep, et one police officer Bukavu Airport)
  • Kigali - First shaking at 3:25 or so. Roof was rattling and walls too. Felt like something big had landed on roof or something was pushing the house. Neighborhood dogs barking. Having lived in SF, I suspected earthquake, so went outside, but it was over already (maybe 30 sec). Dog was running around and it birds were chirping. I must have animal on the roof because it kept moving up there. 4 minutes later, second one, felt very similar, but probably shorter. Was a bit scary actually.
  • Kibuye - About 3:30 in the morning here, I woke to a slight shaking of my bed and building on the edge of Lake Kivu. It was The first earthquake I have experienced so I wasn't sure what it was, I was like is this a massage in my bed, but when I finally woke up clearly to find out it was an earthquake, it was over. Woke my family and neighbors as well. Very strange, no damage

  • Bihanga district of ibanda - i was in my bedroom.at 19:24(7:24 pm),i felt the desk under my pc start to shake very strong,and outside i listened the sound of the hearth quake spread around the hills!
  • Wakiso, Uganda - Sitting at my desk. My chair began shaking. I heard my wooden bookcase creak and saw movement in normally stationary objects.
  • Byumba, Rwanda - Moderate shaking here
  • Kampala, Uganda - at around 1930 this evening i felt the chair i was sitting on moving slightly and the door banged for about 10 seconds.
  • Byumba, Rwanda - I was sitting on the couch and my door started shaking, like someone was knocking really hard and then I notices everything shaking...it lasted for about 5 seconds maybe.
  • Kampala Uganda - Felt shaking and heard foundation cracking in large hotel downtown Nakasero (Central Kampala). Shaking lasted about one minute

  • Bukoto, Kampala - 10 seconds of shaking. Was on my bed and felt it moving, then noticed items hanging on the door moving around, and as I stood up could feel the floor shaking!
  • Lubowa - While sitting on the couch I felt a light shaking for about a minute. I thought my husband was shaking the couch and he thought I was shaking the couch. Then we noticed that the chain on a lamp was swinging slightly.
  • Kigali, Rwanda - Lasted about 45 seconds and shook the bed enough to notice. Just some light shaking though.
  • Kigali, Rwanda - My table and chairs were shaking, felt like a set of massive trucks drove by, lasted for about 5-7 seconds.
  • Kigali - On bus during afternoon quake but felt aftershock around 630pm

  • Luwero, Kampala - At 19:15, while seated in a heavy sofa chair, I felt it shaking and saw near by stationary objects including a T.V stand shake for about 20 sec. It was weaker than the one I last felt in 2007.

  • Kisasi, Kampala - I was watching tv an suddenly sofa moved or started shaking, I can't explain that feeling, curtains moved too like there was a breeze...Scary!

  • Unknown - I was in on the fifth floor of an apartment building in Kigali, Rwanda and felt strong shaking for about 30-45 seconds around 6:30 pm on Nov 20, 2012
  • Musanze, Rwanda - Last night around dinner time (approx.) 19:00 local time, we heard rumbling like a strong wind and felt light shaking that lasted about 10 seconds.
  • Lubowa, Kampala - Nov 20th, about 19h30, felt building moving, furniture and windows shaking for about 30 seconds.
  • Kampala, Uganda - Felt shaking in SE Kampala on 3rd floor of small apartment building.
  • Kigali, Rwanda - the shaking occurred around 18:30 p.m. on November 20. I was in the center of town, in the Chadel Building. My family in Nyatutarama reported two tremors.
  • Kampala - While in my apartment in Kampala the building shook and a heavy Wall unit starting rocking with the building windows vibrating.
  • Kampala, Kabira - 20 November 19H30 during 15 secondes
  • Kigali - It started slowly (very lightly) and went strong for about 5seconds. The whole lenghth of the earthquake may be from 30seconds to 1 minute. We could see walls shaking for like 2seconds!
  • Kigali, Rwanda - Was in the hotel room and the bed began shaking (in fact all the building). May be for 15 sec. Then I went to the terrace and doors kept shaking a little bit more. Felt completely impotent and vulnerable. Next time I'll remember you'd better get under furniture. Even if useless, it can keep your mind busy instead of paniquing.
  • Ntinda - Funny thing. This is the second one I have felt. Was sitting in the same exact position I was in when I felt one even more powerful but much shorter (about 3 secs). Been wondering what it was until yesterday at 19.23. This time with 2 people present and this lasted longer. Worrysome that no one felt the one from about 2-3 months ago that felt like a canon but lasted a scary 3 seconds or less.
  • KAMPALA - Was on 3rd floor of office block around 7:30pm. Could feel shaking for around 1 minute, and hearing partitions of building shifting relative to floors

    MMI II (Very weak shaking) ?
    People :
    Felt by persons at rest, on upper floors or favorably placed.
    MMI III (Weak shaking) ?
    People :
    Felt indoors; hanging objects may swing, vibration similar to passing of light trucks, duration may be estimated, may not be recognized as an earthquake.
    MMI IV (Light shaking) ?
    People :
    Generally noticed indoors but not outside. Light sleepers may be awakened. Vibration may be likened to the passing of heavy traffic, or to the jolt of a heavy object falling or striking the building.
    Fittings :
    Doors and windows rattle. Glassware and crockery rattle. Liquids in open vessels may be slightly disturbed. Standing motorcars may rock.
    Structures :
    Walls and frames of buildings, and partitions and suspended ceilings in commercial buildings, may be heard to creak.
    MMI V (Moderate shaking) ?
    People :
    Generally felt outside, and by almost everyone indoors. Most sleepers awakened. A few people alarmed.
    Fittings :
    Small unstable objects are displaced or upset. Some glassware and crockery may be broken. Hanging pictures knock against the wall. Open doors may swing. Cupboard doors secured by magnetic catches may open. Pendulum clocks stop, start, or change rate.
    Structures :
    Some large display windows cracked. A few earthenware toilet fixtures cracked.
    MMI VI (Strong shaking) ?
    People Felt by all. People and animals alarmed. Many run outside. Difficulty experienced in walking steadily.
    Fittings :
    Objects fall from shelves. Pictures fall from walls. Some furniture moved on smooth floors, some unsecured free-standing fireplaces moved. Glassware and crockery broken. Very unstable furniture overturned. Small church and school bells ring. Appliances move on bench or table tops. Filing cabinets or "easy glide" drawers may open (or shut).
    Structures :
    Slight damage to buildings with low standard. Some stucco or cement plaster falls. Large display windows broken. Damage to a few weak domestic chimneys, some may fall.
    Environment :
    Trees and bushes shake, or are heard to rustle. Loose material may be dislodged from sloping ground, e.g. existing slides, talus slopes, shingle slides.
    MMI VII (Very strong shaking) ?
    People
    General alarm. Difficulty experienced in standing. Noticed by motorcar drivers who may stop.
    Fittings :
    Large bells ring. Furniture moves on smooth floors, may move on carpeted floors. Substantial damage to fragile contents of buildings.
    Structures :
    Unreinforced stone and brick walls cracked. Low standard buildings cracked with some minor masonry falls. A few instances of damage to buildings of ordinary workmanship. Unbraced parapets, unbraced brick gables, and architectural ornaments fall. Roofing tiles, especially ridge tiles may be dislodged. Many unreinforced domestic chimneys damaged, often falling from roof-line. Water tanks Type I burst. A few instances of damage to brick veneers and plaster or cement-based linings. Unrestrained water cylinders (hot-water cylinders) may move and leak. Some common windows cracked. Suspended ceilings damaged.
    Environment :
    Water made turbid by stirred up mud. Small slides such as falls of sand and gravel banks, and small rock-falls from steep slopes and cuttings. Instances of settlement of unconsolidated or wet, or weak soils. Some fine cracks appear in sloping ground. A few instances of liquefaction (i.e. small water and sand ejections).
    MMI VIII (Severe shaking) ?
    People Alarm may approach panic. Steering of motorcars greatly affected. Structures : Low standard buildings heavily damaged, some collapse. ordinary workmanship buildings damaged, some with partial collapse. Reinforced masonry or concrete buildings damaged in some cases. A few instances of damage to buildings and bridges designed and built to resist earthquakes. Monuments and pre-1976 elevated tanks and factory stacks twisted or brought down. Some pre-1965 infill masonry panels damaged. A few post-1980 brick veneers damaged. Decayed timber piles of houses damaged. Houses not secured to foundations may move. Most unreinforced domestic chimneys damaged, some below roof-line, many brought down. Environment : Cracks appear on steep slopes and in wet ground. Small to moderate slides in roadside cuttings and unsupported excavations. Small water and sand ejections and localized lateral spreading adjacent to streams, canals, lakes, etc.
    MMI IX (Violent shaking) ?
    Structures Many low standard buildings destroyed. Ordinary workmanship buildings heavily damaged, some collapse. Reinforced masonry or concrete buildings damaged, some with partial collapse. Buildings and bridges designed and built to resist earthquakes damaged in some cases, some with flexible frames seriously damaged. Damage or permanent distortion to some buildings and bridges, designed and built to normal use standards. Houses not secured to foundations shifted off. Brick veneers fall and expose frames. Environment : Cracking of ground conspicuous. Landsliding general on steep slopes. Liquefaction effects intensified and more widespread, with large lateral spreading and flow sliding adjacent to streams, canals, lakes, etc.
