  • St Helier - Sitting at my PC and it felt like someone was at the other end shaking my desk back and forth. I looked up over my monitor to see no one and that's when I thought something was odd.

  • St Peter - moderate maybe 8 second shake enough to move entire building making the building rattle and rumble. Sounded like a large lorry at first. Enough to shake office computers etc. A little scary.

  • St Helier - Sleeping due to night shift work. I was woken up!
  • St. Saviour - I'm at school at the moment and I could hear all the books and stuff on the wall shaking and then all the computers starting rattling and wobbling and we all felt a huge vibration sweep across us!
  • St mary - No damage.... 2 definite movements... Thought something had crashed in my roof... Scary stuff
  • St Peter Port - Very short tremour only lasting a second or two. Inside the office I mistook it for someone falling off their chair... At first I refused to believe it was an earthquake!
  • Vale - have never felt an earthquake before so have nothing to compare it to.
  • St. Sampson - There was a rumble and then the house shook moderately. The dog barked with the rumbling. We did not know whether it was an explosion or not.
  • St. Andrews - We were in ICT listening to some sick tunes wen we herd a boom like and all the computers fell of the desks like and everyone was screaming and Eurgh it was horrible. Jk nothing happened

  • St Peter Prot - I was on the phone and the office just rumbled and shook for about 2 seconds. Like a bomb had exploded. Lady who I was on the phone to in the Rohais experienced the same thing and we immediately knew it was something big!
  • St Peter Port - Rubling sound for a few seconds, and the building (multi-storey office block) shook, it ended with a single loud bang/rumble.

  • guernsey - Very odd. Thought someone had slammed a door but the the windows and doors were shaking for a few seconds.

  • St Brelade - Rattling windows and floors, didn't know what it was at first. Looked outside to see no obvious signs of a cause and realised it was an earthquake. Only earthquake I've actually felt in my 18 years of living.

  • St Helier - Stepped outside of seedee jons when a big lorry went past, felt a rumble. Heard about earthquake after, checked my receipt and time matched up. Earthquake has reached 'that's a big lorry' levels.

  • Guernsey - I was on 3rd floor office building which I felt move on two occasions. There was a load noise. It carried on for around 30 seconds. Everyone from offices on street came out to see what happened.

  • St Andrews - Was sitting in car by model yacht pond when car suddenly started to rock and move up and down just before 1pm. Thought it was a gust of wind but too violent and it wasnt windy at the time. Thought it was strange until others reported the same to Island FM.
  • St. Helier - I was at office, heard a sound and chair shook for at least 3 second.
  • Channel Islands - 4.6 on the Richter Scale... first one in 100 years apparently
  • Vale - Felt like a lorry had hit the house at first. Lots of crockery shaking, lasted a few seconds.
  • St.Andrews - Some of my friends didn't feel it as they were in a different class standing up. But our class were sitting on tables on the top floor of our school so we felt the full force. I was quite scared as there was 1, maybe 2 big bangs then a constant vibration for 30 seconds. Nothing was damaged which was lucky because we were in a Science Room.
  • St Peter Port - Sky dish fell off can not watch the Tour!
  • St Sampson - The only explanation I could think of was that an enormous heavy vehicle was right outside the house, causing the rumbling and vibrations. That was followed by a loud explosion and definite shaking. I ran out of the house believing the roof had collapsed!

  • Forest - I thought it was a lorry hitting something. I was upstairs in the bathroom at the time and there was a loud rumbling noise and the whole floor shook. Can't see any damage but haven't done a proper check yet.

  • St. Peter Port - I was just about to play a couple out of their wedding at St. James concert hall! when I felt a light rumble (thought it was a big lorry outside) - then there was a loud boom and the while room shook for a few seconds - was probably scary than it was because it's an old building so the balcony felt like it might come down! - couldn't see any damage... Although I swear the piano moved a little bit!
  • Vale - There was a loud bang & then whole cottage shook for a few seconds. Thought attached cottage next door had collapsed so ran outside!
  • St Helier - Sitting at my desk working away and shake city !!! Lasted all of 3 seconds - the earth moved for me hehe !

  • St Lawrence - I was just making a cuppa for my lunch break when i heard what sounded like a massive convoy of heavy trucks passing the window outside, very strange though as it lasted for a good few seconds
  • Portelet - Two loud bangs which sounded like explosions, whole house shook and flocks of birds flew out of trees. No visible damage.
  • St Andrews - I was sat in my lounge when I heard a rumbling noise. Because I live near a main road I assumed at first it was a large lorry passing but it got louder and louder and it was a very 'deep' sound.. Then there was a very loud thud and the whole house shook. I thought that the so called lorry must have crashed into my house so I went to investigate but of course there was nothing there. I then realised that this must have been an earthquake.

  • St.Helier - Near an open window, I heard something like a sonic boom with some shaking for a few seconds while the door rattled and some furniture wobbled. First thought was that a lorry had hit the building, never felt a quake that strong before.
  • Sark - Distinctly two large thumps seconds apart. House shook, open windows moved and office chair was sat on moved.

  • st peter port - Waiting on top of flat open roof of ferry harbour building for rapide from france when I felt the building move, slightly unbalancing, I like others with me presumed it was due to the docking of the newly arrived ferry from the Uk.
  • St Helier - Only lasted roughly 3-4 seconds but it was quite a large rumble and the building I was sitting in was moving quite a lot, almost felt as though it was swaying.

  • St Peter Port - Felt it on 2nd floor of my home. Whole house rumbled and shook. I ran outside as I knew it was something significant. Scary!
  • St.Saviour - - Was typing on my keyboard, heard loud rumble/bang and simultaneously the computer screen was shaking. Lasted 3-4 seconds. I won't forget that in a hurry!

  • St Peter Port - I was in a 400yr old building halfway up the hill out of St Peter Port (sitting on 2Ba Icart gneiss!) We heard a loud bang like something really heavy being dropped and all the walls and wooden floors shook for a couple of seconds.
  • St helier - No damage, I live in a block of flats, and the whole block shook quite strongly!
  • Castel - We heard a very loud, prolonged boom (much louder and longer than the Concorde sonic booms we heard every afternoon for many years) followed by some light shaking of the building. We thought either a large aircraft had crashed nearby or that Flamanville had blown its top. Last time I heard something like that, I was about 5 miles from a gasworks that blew up. Fortunately nothing so dramatic this time and no damage found so far.
  • St Sampson - Heard a bang then the house started to shake and the cups in the cupboard were rattling.scary experience.
  • Grouville - Heard a rumble and the TV and other thing shock. made the dog jump up.
  • St helier - Felt like a tank was going by ... Shook my shop!!

  • St Peter Port - Felt like the floor was dropping, a rumble and rattling. Felt the building shake, sounded like a truck had hit the building. It made my stomach lurch, like on a boat in rough weather. I'm not aware of any damage.

  • St Peter Port - The whole house shook twice, I thought a car had crashed in our wall or something fell on our roof, so checked and nothing, no damage and then thought must be earthquake.
  • gorey - loud boom and whole house shook steadily like it was loose,floors vibrated. Didnt associate a boom noise with an earthquake so thought maybe an explosion at first then I realised. It was all over in a few seconds but what an experience!

  • St Martin - Here it sounded like a BIG motor and a distant explosion. My house got the wobblies. And a few cracks in old plaster got longer, otherwise no damage at all.
  • Bailiffs Cross - Very loud bang followed by felling of pressure wave and visual disturbance seen in distance rumbling sound with moderate vibration growing in strength until ground and granite cottage shaking. Book case fell over cups and plates moved on worktop
  • St ouens - I was outdoors by the beach and heard a loud rumble and the ground shook.
  • St Helier - Scary! Im seated on the top (4th) floor surrounded by wobbling glass walls!!!
  • St Helier - Top floor of three storey Victorian building and felt for about five seconds. Strong shake of the building. Fixtures and building rattled. Stronger than the normal sensation of a truck passing felt in previous earthquakes. Office staff alarmed as very unusual. People on raised ground floor did not feel it.
  • St Peter Port - I was at the harbour at the time in my office when the room and desk shook - I thought a ship had crashed into the jetty
  • London - I was sleeping and i actually thought there was a train coming but it was much stronger.
  • St helier - We were in class and I heard this dull vibrating sound, well a deep sound anyway. Then the room started to weakly shake, but the shaking gradually kept getting worse until it abruptly stopped after about 25 seconds. We were worried it would continue to get stronger!
  • Plouguiel - Fort bruit sourd et la charpente de la maison(ancienne) a fortement craqué (coté nord - maison aspectée au sud -) comme sous l'effet d'une forte bourrasque de vent mais la cime des arbres n'était pas plus agitée qu'avant (force 1). Pas de dégâts repérés.

  • Bodelwyddan , north Wales - Iv never experienced an earthquake before so when the shaking woke me I thought there was a poltergeist in my bedroom , I posted on Facebook and two other friends also experienced it in Rhyl , it was just before 4.30 am my whole bedroom shook , my bed , my tv , my wardrobes and me ! It was for a matter of seconds

  • Llanfairfechan North Wales, Uk - Woken by a loud sound at approx 4.20am.Strange humming and ornaments vibrating.Dogs barking.

  • Llandudno - Pooed my pants and dropped my jam on toast , may need months off work .
  • Penygroes - Rumbling and shaking woke me up
  • rhosgadfan - the dogs and cats sensed something was coming as they're behavior started to get strange maybe a minute before it happened and then i heard a big rumble and the house was moving. scary.
  • Llandudno, N Wales - It felt like the house was hit with a large thud and shook for about 5 seconds, impressive given this is a three story very strong mid terrace house.
  • Penygroes - Was woken up by bedroom wall shaking and followed by loud thud as if chimney had fallen !!!!!1 very scary
  • Dublin - It was enough to wake me up, but not much else. No window rattling or wall creaking here, just a quick shake.

  • Denbigh - I woke to hear a bang that sounded very similar to someone closing a car door in the street outside. This was immediately followed by the sound of the house vibrating for a period of less than half a second. The vibrations were very gentle. I did not feel any vibration - I only heard it.
  • Dublin - On night duty (on third floor in hospital). Felt floor and chair move. Presses and table shook.

  • Llanbedrog - The house shook at around 4.15 Strongly enough to wake me up. The birds were tweeting like mad!

  • Aughrim, Wicklow, Ireland - Woke up from my sleep, felt shaking, I knew it was an earthquake. There was also a low sound that accompanied it.

  • llanfairpwll - I thought wylfa had had an explosion it was really loud and really shaking. Ive experienced an earthquake before of magnitude 5.8. Was really surprised it was magnitude 3.8 felt more like a high 4. Hmm

The dog has been very weird for 3 days-- today she has been normal! Odd!! Was quite scary!

  • Llanbedrog LL53 7UR - Woken by bang or thud, then felt shaking, and heard lots of rattling for about 15 seconds. Wardrobe doors opened. Thought it was earthquake, as had felt the midlands one in 2007/8 which went on longer. Got up & looked out. Very very calm. Livestock in fields untroubled. Sea calm. Nothing! But at least knew it wasn't an explosion or similar. Was reading a book about New Zealand quakes and eruptions just the day before! Even so, was sure at time of waking this was a real experience, not a dream.
  • Ballymoney, Gorey, Co. Wexford - Awoke just before, for no apparent reason, that is until I heard a loud noise and my bed started shaking. I was going to check outside for a big truck passing, but I just knew it was an earthquake. Took note of the time to check today.

  • llanbedrog - Awoke in Hotel bedroom (Tremfan Hall) at 04:17. Could feel whole room shaking laterally, noise of objects 'gingling' and sound like a very large vehicle passing by. Lasted for about 10 seconds after waking.
  • Navan Co Meath - Around 3.00pm in afternoon (28th May)I felt a low unusual rumbling in the kitchen - thought it must be very large machinery passing by & looked out the window to check but nothing - then presumed it was low flying aircraft. Not sure if this is related to the Wales earthquake that occured 12 hours later?

  • Nottingham - Woke me up. Noticeable rumble and an obvious shake. Live on the 4th floor. Was definitely a tremor as I have experienced tremors in Chile, South America.

    MMI III (Weak shaking) ?
    People :
    Felt indoors; hanging objects may swing, vibration similar to passing of light trucks, duration may be estimated, may not be recognized as an earthquake.
    MMI IV (Light shaking) ?
    People :
    Generally noticed indoors but not outside. Light sleepers may be awakened. Vibration may be likened to the passing of heavy traffic, or to the jolt of a heavy object falling or striking the building.
    Fittings :
    Doors and windows rattle. Glassware and crockery rattle. Liquids in open vessels may be slightly disturbed. Standing motorcars may rock.
    Structures :
    Walls and frames of buildings, and partitions and suspended ceilings in commercial buildings, may be heard to creak.
    MMI V (Moderate shaking) ?
    People :
    Generally felt outside, and by almost everyone indoors. Most sleepers awakened. A few people alarmed.
    Fittings :
    Small unstable objects are displaced or upset. Some glassware and crockery may be broken. Hanging pictures knock against the wall. Open doors may swing. Cupboard doors secured by magnetic catches may open. Pendulum clocks stop, start, or change rate.
    Structures :
    Some large display windows cracked. A few earthenware toilet fixtures cracked.
    MMI VI (Strong shaking) ?
    People Felt by all. People and animals alarmed. Many run outside. Difficulty experienced in walking steadily.
    Fittings :
    Objects fall from shelves. Pictures fall from walls. Some furniture moved on smooth floors, some unsecured free-standing fireplaces moved. Glassware and crockery broken. Very unstable furniture overturned. Small church and school bells ring. Appliances move on bench or table tops. Filing cabinets or "easy glide" drawers may open (or shut).
    Structures :
    Slight damage to buildings with low standard. Some stucco or cement plaster falls. Large display windows broken. Damage to a few weak domestic chimneys, some may fall.
    Environment :
    Trees and bushes shake, or are heard to rustle. Loose material may be dislodged from sloping ground, e.g. existing slides, talus slopes, shingle slides.
    MMI VII (Very strong shaking) ?
    People
    General alarm. Difficulty experienced in standing. Noticed by motorcar drivers who may stop.
    Fittings :
    Large bells ring. Furniture moves on smooth floors, may move on carpeted floors. Substantial damage to fragile contents of buildings.
    Structures :
    Unreinforced stone and brick walls cracked. Low standard buildings cracked with some minor masonry falls. A few instances of damage to buildings of ordinary workmanship. Unbraced parapets, unbraced brick gables, and architectural ornaments fall. Roofing tiles, especially ridge tiles may be dislodged. Many unreinforced domestic chimneys damaged, often falling from roof-line. Water tanks Type I burst. A few instances of damage to brick veneers and plaster or cement-based linings. Unrestrained water cylinders (hot-water cylinders) may move and leak. Some common windows cracked. Suspended ceilings damaged.
    Environment :
    Water made turbid by stirred up mud. Small slides such as falls of sand and gravel banks, and small rock-falls from steep slopes and cuttings. Instances of settlement of unconsolidated or wet, or weak soils. Some fine cracks appear in sloping ground. A few instances of liquefaction (i.e. small water and sand ejections).
    MMI VIII (Severe shaking) ?
    People Alarm may approach panic. Steering of motorcars greatly affected. Structures : Low standard buildings heavily damaged, some collapse. ordinary workmanship buildings damaged, some with partial collapse. Reinforced masonry or concrete buildings damaged in some cases. A few instances of damage to buildings and bridges designed and built to resist earthquakes. Monuments and pre-1976 elevated tanks and factory stacks twisted or brought down. Some pre-1965 infill masonry panels damaged. A few post-1980 brick veneers damaged. Decayed timber piles of houses damaged. Houses not secured to foundations may move. Most unreinforced domestic chimneys damaged, some below roof-line, many brought down. Environment : Cracks appear on steep slopes and in wet ground. Small to moderate slides in roadside cuttings and unsupported excavations. Small water and sand ejections and localized lateral spreading adjacent to streams, canals, lakes, etc.
    MMI IX (Violent shaking) ?
    Structures Many low standard buildings destroyed. Ordinary workmanship buildings heavily damaged, some collapse. Reinforced masonry or concrete buildings damaged, some with partial collapse. Buildings and bridges designed and built to resist earthquakes damaged in some cases, some with flexible frames seriously damaged. Damage or permanent distortion to some buildings and bridges, designed and built to normal use standards. Houses not secured to foundations shifted off. Brick veneers fall and expose frames. Environment : Cracking of ground conspicuous. Landsliding general on steep slopes. Liquefaction effects intensified and more widespread, with large lateral spreading and flow sliding adjacent to streams, canals, lakes, etc.
