  • Punta Banco - Very short but strong jolt
  • Ojochal de Osa - Sufficient shaking to wake me! Have experienced stronger tremors in various parts of Canada so not concerned.
  • Osa Peninsula, Costa Rica - we have a cabinet mounted on the wall and when the earth shakes the cabinet rattles. Last evening around 9PM costa rica time all five shelves rattled for no more than 30 seconds. We don't see a report of it online

  • Caizon, Chiriqui - Chair I was sitting in started shaking...dishes were rattling...pots and pans were swinging wildly on their hangers. Dogs started barking--one was howling. Did not last long--less than 30 seconds, but it made itself known!
  • OVSICORI Panama Mar 12 13:41 PM 4.4 5 MAP I Felt It INFO
  • Caldera, Chiriqui, Republic de Panama - It passed through the house like a wave. All the windows shook for about 10 seconds.
  • Chiriqui, Panama - Quick but violent...may be around a 4.8 to 5.1.
  • Boquete, Panama - Shook the house pretty good .....
  • Boquete, Panama - There was a deep rumbling and the room started to shake...the walls, the light and the floor were all moving and this lasted for about 8 seconds, at a guess!
  • David, Panama - Sitting on couch and felt a big jolt.
  • Boquete - Very loud, lasted only 3-4 seconds. No damage to house.
  • Alto Boquete - No shaking just a rumble and then a boom. Rumble just micro-seconds before boom then same after the boom.
  • Jaramillo Arriba, Boquete, Chiriqui, Pan - Deep rumbling like thunder, felt nauseated. Dog threw up at 7:15 a.m., before the quake.
  • Palmira Del Banco - Short but moderate shaking of house as wave passed.
  • Boquete - Boquete area basically we get shake often, but this one have been so far the strong one ever...
  • Potrerillos Arriba - Quick boom. Shaking light-moderate but also very fast.
  • Jaramillo Abajo - Good quick thump, felt like a moderate hit. Pets certainly responded.
  • Potrerillos Arriba - Quick boom. Light to moderate shaking throughout the house.
  • Boquete, Alto Lino - Loud boom, can hear
  • Brisas de Boquetena - Very quick boom gust of wind gone.
  • Alto Lino, Boquete - Large boom....then strong shacking for a short duration.
  • Boquete - Heavy shaking for about 8 seconds, loud boom - sounded and felt as if a very large tree had fallen on the house. Dog started barking and running through house. Surprised by the loud booming noise.
  • Boquete central - Rumble BOOM rumble...whole lot of shaking going one and one freaked out dog!
  • Caldera Chiriqui Panama - Loud boom, felt like air shock wave hit house followed by 2 to 3 seconds of nothing then 3 seconds of strong shaking. No apparent damage to structures. No visible waves in swimming pool. Strongest quake I've ever felt.
  • El Salto, Boquete - Two strong jolts with loud boom. Birds went quiet. Walls buckled slightly.
  • Boquete - It was not an earthquake, it was an explosion. I have much experience in both. I don't expect to hear the truth.
  • David, colinas de Santa Isabel - Heard rumble then went through the house like a huge gust of wind that shook the whole CONCRETE house. All the dogs and chickens in the neighborhood went crazy afterwards. My first earthquake experience.
  • Quepos, Costa Rica - On third floor, a quick strong shake building noises.
  • Volcancito - We have had two today. There was an extremely loud boom (like a sonic boom) and then the whole house shook moderately no damage). It didn't last very long. The first was around 8:15 and the second at around 4:40. The second one was quicker.
  • Caldera, Chiriqui - Loud rumbles and strong shaking, but for only 4 - 6 seconds. Clearly the epicenter was much closer than usual b/c this 4.4 was much stronger than what we normally feel here when there's a 5.8 - 6.2 earthquake off the coast of Costa Rica. A much smaller aftershock this afternoon, around 4:45 PM.
  • Volcancito Panama - Light rumble increasing in intensity to moderate shaking then tapered off. Ran outside and cats ran downstairs.
  • Alto Boquete - Short shaking. Heard no noise.
  • Coquito - Very strong quick jolt. It sounded like a deep explosion.
  • Alto Jaramillo - Felt like my clay roof tiles were blowing up and off. Never experienced the thunder like blast before!
  • Jaramillo Abajo - Loud noise followed by very quick but strong shake - only about 1 or 2 secs. Sounded and felt more like an explosion than a quake.
  • Boquete - We are traveling and staying in Bouquete. We felt this about 10 am the shaking following a loud bang like thunder or an explosion. We felt it again on a coffee tour. Both were similar lasting about 15 seconds. All guests on the tour shared the similar experience.
  • Palo Alto, Boquete - Two earthquakes today.....morning was slightly stronger....moderate rumble, boom, the moderate rumble.....whole thing lasted 5-6 seconds.
  • Boquete - Some people said it was strong shaking and it did knock a stand off of a nearby table. I was outside and felt a slight shaking.
  • Palmira Abajo - PALMIRA ABAJO on Rio Colga, Moderate shaking lasting about ten seconds.
  • Volcancito, Panama - All doors and windows rattled floor in waves , no damage, duration about 6 seconds. Cats still scared.
  • Palo Alto, Boquete - Loud noise and house shook. Short, a few seconds. It felt like a big truck hit the house. There was a small weak aftershock in the afternoon. I agree exactly with the other entry from Palo Alto, Boquete.

City/Village where you felt the earthquake
MMI II (Very weak shaking) ?
    People :
Felt by persons at rest, on upper floors or favorably placed.
    MMI III (Weak shaking) ?
    People :
Felt indoors; hanging objects may swing, vibration similar to passing of light trucks, duration may be estimated, may not be recognized as an earthquake.
    MMI IV (Light shaking) ?
    People :
Generally noticed indoors but not outside. Light sleepers may be awakened. Vibration may be likened to the passing of heavy traffic, or to the jolt of a heavy object falling or striking the building.
    Fittings :
Doors and windows rattle. Glassware and crockery rattle. Liquids in open vessels may be slightly disturbed. Standing motorcars may rock.
    Structures :
Walls and frames of buildings, and partitions and suspended ceilings in commercial buildings, may be heard to creak.
    MMI V (Moderate shaking) ?
    People :
Generally felt outside, and by almost everyone indoors. Most sleepers awakened. A few people alarmed.
    Fittings :
Small unstable objects are displaced or upset. Some glassware and crockery may be broken. Hanging pictures knock against the wall. Open doors may swing. Cupboard doors secured by magnetic catches may open. Pendulum clocks stop, start, or change rate.
    Structures :
Some large display windows cracked. A few earthenware toilet fixtures cracked.
    MMI VI (Strong shaking) ?
People Felt by all. People and animals alarmed. Many run outside. Difficulty experienced in walking steadily.
    Fittings :
Objects fall from shelves. Pictures fall from walls. Some furniture moved on smooth floors, some unsecured free-standing fireplaces moved. Glassware and crockery broken. Very unstable furniture overturned. Small church and school bells ring. Appliances move on bench or table tops. Filing cabinets or "easy glide" drawers may open (or shut).
    Structures :
Slight damage to buildings with low standard. Some stucco or cement plaster falls. Large display windows broken. Damage to a few weak domestic chimneys, some may fall.
    Environment :
Trees and bushes shake, or are heard to rustle. Loose material may be dislodged from sloping ground, e.g. existing slides, talus slopes, shingle slides.
MMI VII (Very strong shaking) ?
    People
General alarm. Difficulty experienced in standing. Noticed by motorcar drivers who may stop.
    Fittings :
Large bells ring. Furniture moves on smooth floors, may move on carpeted floors. Substantial damage to fragile contents of buildings.
    Structures :
Unreinforced stone and brick walls cracked. Low standard buildings cracked with some minor masonry falls. A few instances of damage to buildings of ordinary workmanship. Unbraced parapets, unbraced brick gables, and architectural ornaments fall. Roofing tiles, especially ridge tiles may be dislodged. Many unreinforced domestic chimneys damaged, often falling from roof-line. Water tanks Type I burst. A few instances of damage to brick veneers and plaster or cement-based linings. Unrestrained water cylinders (hot-water cylinders) may move and leak. Some common windows cracked. Suspended ceilings damaged.
    Environment :
Water made turbid by stirred up mud. Small slides such as falls of sand and gravel banks, and small rock-falls from steep slopes and cuttings. Instances of settlement of unconsolidated or wet, or weak soils. Some fine cracks appear in sloping ground. A few instances of liquefaction (i.e. small water and sand ejections).
    MMI VIII (Severe shaking) ?
People Alarm may approach panic. Steering of motorcars greatly affected. Structures : Low standard buildings heavily damaged, some collapse. ordinary workmanship buildings damaged, some with partial collapse. Reinforced masonry or concrete buildings damaged in some cases. A few instances of damage to buildings and bridges designed and built to resist earthquakes. Monuments and pre-1976 elevated tanks and factory stacks twisted or brought down. Some pre-1965 infill masonry panels damaged. A few post-1980 brick veneers damaged. Decayed timber piles of houses damaged. Houses not secured to foundations may move. Most unreinforced domestic chimneys damaged, some below roof-line, many brought down. Environment : Cracks appear on steep slopes and in wet ground. Small to moderate slides in roadside cuttings and unsupported excavations. Small water and sand ejections and localized lateral spreading adjacent to streams, canals, lakes, etc.
    MMI IX (Violent shaking) ?
Structures Many low standard buildings destroyed. Ordinary workmanship buildings heavily damaged, some collapse. Reinforced masonry or concrete buildings damaged, some with partial collapse. Buildings and bridges designed and built to resist earthquakes damaged in some cases, some with flexible frames seriously damaged. Damage or permanent distortion to some buildings and bridges, designed and built to normal use standards. Houses not secured to foundations shifted off. Brick veneers fall and expose frames. Environment : Cracking of ground conspicuous. Landsliding general on steep slopes. Liquefaction effects intensified and more widespread, with large lateral spreading and flow sliding adjacent to streams, canals, lakes, etc.
