I have never experienced an earthquake before as I live in England.Personally, it was the most horrible experience. I was even cuddling up to my sister and couldn't stop shaking. I may seem to be exaggerating but it was simply horrible.

USGS Saint Helier, Jersey Jul 23 16:26 4.0 2 MAP I Felt It INFO
  • St Helier - no shaking; just heard a constant low rumble sound which sounded distant for around 5 seconds
  • St Brelades - I was sitting on the balcony of the hotel on the fourth floor admiring the view across the bay. Suddenly the balcony shook and the railings moved, I sat there riveted to the spot unable to make sense of what I had just experienced. My brain said "earth quake" but my mind couldn't quite accept that it was. There was no other sign at all that anyone else had noticed it so I began to think my mind was playing tricks on me and I had imagined it until I heard the news confirm that there had been an e
  • St Brelades Bay - I noticed it, family didn't, like a truck passing nearby
  • St Mary - Sounded like a big truck going past but lasted too long. Very noisy and sound of squealing animal outside. Husband shouted "Get out, it's an earthquake!" No damage noted.
  • Grouville - sunbathing in garden and felt the sunlounger shake for a couple of seconds, felt like a huge truck going past
  • St Peter Port - Thought was either tremor or truck. Now know it was tremor!
  • St Clement - Rumbling & shaking increasing in intensity for approximately 3-5 seconds. No evidence of damage to property or local area.
  • Trinity - I was sitting on a desk. No damage, not even books tumbling. Loud roar approaching, like a low flying plane or very loud lorry. Then one jolt with a loud crack. The end but it was cool.
  • EMSC France Jul 23 16:26 4.0 10 MAP I Felt It INFO
  • St. Helier - No Damage, slight wobble felt like about 2.2 compared to the last quake of 3.9 / 4.0
  • St. Martins - Felt it but as strong as it was few weeks ago
  • St Ouen - Strongest of the recent quakes that I have felt, though I did not feel the large quake earlier this month to compare.
  • St. Martins - Felt shaking but not as strong as it was last time. No damage
  • St Helier - St Helier Jersey :-Loud rumble with moderate jarring wobble to the building didn't last long at all.
  • St Helier - Not sure about the rest of the island but certainly a nice loud rumble with slight shaking - pictures not quite straight on the wall anymore!
  • St Peter Port - House shaked a couple of times, but not that strong.
  • St Ouen - Loud rumbling and windows shook. It felt like the one on 12 July
  • St. Andrew - Heard noise and felt vibration coming through floor (bare feet). Lasted a couple of seconds. Cannot compare with the 11th July as was driving at the time.
  • St John - Loud rumble, house shook..pheasants squawked loudly as they did last time.
  • St. Ouen - house shook, birds freaked out, i freaked out.
  • St. Sampson - Not as strong as 11 July. Long rumble and minor movement. No loud bang this time
  • St. Brelade - Four floors up the building shook.Sounded like the deep rumbling of a train going past, ending with a heavy impact. Not as severe and prolonged as the last on 11th july,14
  • St Martins - Similar vibrations as though an underground train was coming towards the house followed by a thud which made some doors rattle, all lasted 10 seconds or so.
  • St Brelade - No Damage, Felt shaking but not as strong as it was last time.
  • St Saviour - I didn't feel the 11th July earthquake, but I felt this one. I live by the airport, and at first thought it was the rumble of a plane taking off, but it lasted a bit too long and the rumble felt a bit too deep. If it hadn't been for the first earthquake so recently, I probably wouldn't have thought too much of it.
  • St Peter - Thought a huge truck was going past, except I live down a tiny lane.
  • Bliss - My wife said she felt nothing
  • St. John - Load rumbling and I thought it was worse than the quake a week or two ago. Quite startling actually
  • St Saviour - Vibrating banister.Made the toilet flush!
  • St Peter Port - Very light shudder and vibrating, but no damage to the property
  • GEOFON France Jul 23 16:26 3.6 10 MAP I Felt It INFO
  • St Helier - I did not feel July 11th earthquake but felt this one! Heard and could feel the rumble and shake beneath my feet for 5 seconds or so. It was as if a plane was taking off close by, or as if I was in an underground train station. I was relaxing watching TV and immediately hit pause as it happened, my mind was definitely saying earthquake! No damage. Could hear dogs barking and birds going a little mad!

MMI II (Very weak shaking) ?
    People :
Felt by persons at rest, on upper floors or favorably placed.
    MMI III (Weak shaking) ?
    People :
Felt indoors; hanging objects may swing, vibration similar to passing of light trucks, duration may be estimated, may not be recognized as an earthquake.
    MMI IV (Light shaking) ?
    People :
Generally noticed indoors but not outside. Light sleepers may be awakened. Vibration may be likened to the passing of heavy traffic, or to the jolt of a heavy object falling or striking the building.
    Fittings :
Doors and windows rattle. Glassware and crockery rattle. Liquids in open vessels may be slightly disturbed. Standing motorcars may rock.
    Structures :
Walls and frames of buildings, and partitions and suspended ceilings in commercial buildings, may be heard to creak.
    MMI V (Moderate shaking) ?
    People :
Generally felt outside, and by almost everyone indoors. Most sleepers awakened. A few people alarmed.
    Fittings :
Small unstable objects are displaced or upset. Some glassware and crockery may be broken. Hanging pictures knock against the wall. Open doors may swing. Cupboard doors secured by magnetic catches may open. Pendulum clocks stop, start, or change rate.
    Structures :
Some large display windows cracked. A few earthenware toilet fixtures cracked.
    MMI VI (Strong shaking) ?
People Felt by all. People and animals alarmed. Many run outside. Difficulty experienced in walking steadily.
    Fittings :
Objects fall from shelves. Pictures fall from walls. Some furniture moved on smooth floors, some unsecured free-standing fireplaces moved. Glassware and crockery broken. Very unstable furniture overturned. Small church and school bells ring. Appliances move on bench or table tops. Filing cabinets or "easy glide" drawers may open (or shut).
    Structures :
Slight damage to buildings with low standard. Some stucco or cement plaster falls. Large display windows broken. Damage to a few weak domestic chimneys, some may fall.
    Environment :
Trees and bushes shake, or are heard to rustle. Loose material may be dislodged from sloping ground, e.g. existing slides, talus slopes, shingle slides.
MMI VII (Very strong shaking) ?
    People
General alarm. Difficulty experienced in standing. Noticed by motorcar drivers who may stop.
    Fittings :
Large bells ring. Furniture moves on smooth floors, may move on carpeted floors. Substantial damage to fragile contents of buildings.
    Structures :
Unreinforced stone and brick walls cracked. Low standard buildings cracked with some minor masonry falls. A few instances of damage to buildings of ordinary workmanship. Unbraced parapets, unbraced brick gables, and architectural ornaments fall. Roofing tiles, especially ridge tiles may be dislodged. Many unreinforced domestic chimneys damaged, often falling from roof-line. Water tanks Type I burst. A few instances of damage to brick veneers and plaster or cement-based linings. Unrestrained water cylinders (hot-water cylinders) may move and leak. Some common windows cracked. Suspended ceilings damaged.
    Environment :
Water made turbid by stirred up mud. Small slides such as falls of sand and gravel banks, and small rock-falls from steep slopes and cuttings. Instances of settlement of unconsolidated or wet, or weak soils. Some fine cracks appear in sloping ground. A few instances of liquefaction (i.e. small water and sand ejections).
    MMI VIII (Severe shaking) ?
People Alarm may approach panic. Steering of motorcars greatly affected. Structures : Low standard buildings heavily damaged, some collapse. ordinary workmanship buildings damaged, some with partial collapse. Reinforced masonry or concrete buildings damaged in some cases. A few instances of damage to buildings and bridges designed and built to resist earthquakes. Monuments and pre-1976 elevated tanks and factory stacks twisted or brought down. Some pre-1965 infill masonry panels damaged. A few post-1980 brick veneers damaged. Decayed timber piles of houses damaged. Houses not secured to foundations may move. Most unreinforced domestic chimneys damaged, some below roof-line, many brought down. Environment : Cracks appear on steep slopes and in wet ground. Small to moderate slides in roadside cuttings and unsupported excavations. Small water and sand ejections and localized lateral spreading adjacent to streams, canals, lakes, etc.
    MMI IX (Violent shaking) ?
Structures Many low standard buildings destroyed. Ordinary workmanship buildings heavily damaged, some collapse. Reinforced masonry or concrete buildings damaged, some with partial collapse. Buildings and bridges designed and built to resist earthquakes damaged in some cases, some with flexible frames seriously damaged. Damage or permanent distortion to some buildings and bridges, designed and built to normal use standards. Houses not secured to foundations shifted off. Brick veneers fall and expose frames. Environment : Cracking of ground conspicuous. Landsliding general on steep slopes. Liquefaction effects intensified and more widespread, with large lateral spreading and flow sliding adjacent to streams, canals, lakes, etc.
