Many thanks to all the people (among them a lot of volcano lovers) who have send us donations. May we ask the people of El Hierro, reading this page, to use our I HAVE FELT IT form when they feel the current earthquakes. The way you feel it will give us some additional information on what is going on (written on December 22 at 19:46 UTC). Click on this I HAVE FELT IT link. You can write in your own language.

Only 2 El Hierro earthquakes since our last update, but that does not mean anything of course :)

Seems to be something going on again at the CTABand CTAN station, waiking up again?

  2. Henk Koning says:

Everything is up and running again.

  3. Henk Koning says:

On 12 February IGN has put a notification on their website mentioning the project on the Canaries. My Spanish is not good enough to understand exactly what is said. Meanwhile all information from the gps stations on El Hierro are no longer available on the internet as per 13 th February.
Can someone give a brief description and eleborate about what is currently the situation.

    Regards,
    Henk

    • Armand Vervaeck says:

Hi Henk, except for the earthquake notification data everything seems to be down. No trace of any message however. Also strange is that CHIE has stopped functioning as CHIE is the normal seismograph for El Hierro, just like there is one for every other island. Armand

  4. Leona says:

In past 48 hours, on El Hierro, there has been several small quakes, all just about the same depth, magnitude, and location. Perhaps another quake swarm is starting.

  5. Henk Koning says:

On CTAB and even on CORC some activity can be seen including HT. Sleeping with a burp I would say. A small quake but very shallow.

  6. Be informed says:

One other thing about kinetic energy. It would take about 650 million mega tons of force to create a 300 foot tsunami at 3500 miles away. This would be a small moon hitting the ocean. The velocity of a Canary Island collapse would be lucky to reach 220 mph. A typical asteroid is moving at least 38000 mph. This is 170 times as fast. An asteroid would have to at least 15 miles wide to cause such a 300 footer at 3500 miles away. The mass of a total Canary Islands collapse would be tops 5 miles total in size, width, heighth, length. In comparison to the volume of the Atlantic Ocean, the a total Canary Island collapse would like dropping a pea size pebble into a standard size bathtub filled all the way to thr rim. 340,000 to 1 ratio.

It is very frustrating to see even The Weather Channel taken in by this utter nonsense of a mega tsunami created. Lanslides like this produce a big splaah, but upon reaching open water turn into ripples. Just like the same type of event that occurred up in Alaska decades ago. 1700 foot wave that did nothing in the open ocean. Irritating to see such science manure out there like this.

  7. Be informed says:

ANYONE that would believing the utter rubbish about a mega tsunami created from a Canary Islands collapse needs to read these two links, as this science fraud about this is still floating around the internet like crap that won’t flush:

    http://www.lapalma-tsunami.com/tsunami.html

    http://www.drgeorgepc.com/TsunamiMegaEvaluation.html

These fear mongering fools that write these articles about a mega tsunami would have people believe that such a collapse 3500 miles away would create a tsunami 25 times higher than what the 9.1 mega quake in Indonesia could not do to Madagascar which is 3500 miles and was only 12 feet high. An earthquake that caused hundreds of miles of sea floor to be uplifting at a higher rate of speed. Kinetic energy = 1/2 mass (velocity)2. This is what these characters that write this fear porn are totally failing to see, velocity. They only see mass, which is tiny in comparison to massive earthquakes and asteroids that don;t even create such doomsday sized tsunamis.
