Many thanks to all the people (among them a lot of volcano lovers) who have send us donations. May we ask the people of El Hierro, reading this page, to use our I HAVE FELT IT form when they feel the current earthquakes. The way you feel it will give us some additional information on what is going on (written on December 22 at 19:46 UTC). Click on this I HAVE FELT IT link. You can write in your own language.

We are sorry not to have posted more information on El Hierro, since late July. A lot of earthquakes in the world and now recently the Iceland Bardarbunga volcano are part of the reason. Here is the list of the El Hierro seismicity over the last 28 days.

Nothing spectacular the last couple of weeks. If a sudden revival would happen we will jump in with a new information stream of course.

I have not been able to reach the El Hierro pages on the IGN site but I can get http://www.ign.es without any problems.

  2. Mafl says:

Here is a report of a possible new stain at the point of the 1-km-Earthquake:
    http://elhierro1.blogspot.de/
Perhaps Joke can take a look at this place, because M. Betzwieser is not longer at El Hierro.

    • Armand Vervaeck says:

Thanks Mafl. Joke lives at the opposite site of the islands and has unfortunately no car. She has a friend however in the El Golfo part of the island.

  3. brettio says:

Joke mentioned the shivering earthquakes. As a child in NZ with Ruapehu erupting.. there were 2 types of earthquakes we felt in Taupo. first was a kerclunk jolt (quite strong)which was followed by a large volcanic cloud. and the second was a kind of tickling grinding(weak but lasting up to 30seconds…. which was followed by lava flows. I would take the shivering feeling as a serious observation that magma could be on the move…a laymans perspective and from experience.

  4. SEMEESE Roland says:

    Hello Armand,

  5. Benjamín says:

    Armand,

Avcan reports on facebook about a 3.4 earthquake sw of frontera with a dept of 20,5km. The ppl on hierro felt it

    • Armand Vervaeck says:

Thanks Benjamin. I was writing the update while your comment arrived, but thanks for telling me.

  6. BerryTh says:

Has anyone else noticed the HT being higher than 2 days ago?

  7. Peter van der Woude says:

“Yesterday we wrote about the (very) late info from the Helium-3 detection prior to the June 24 earthquake swarm. The reason for involcan publishing this info now is they didn’t have the results until a few days a go”

And there is not a single spectrometer in Spain to analize gasses…. hard to believe

    • Julio says:

There might be one in Europe, but from what I understand there is also a collaboration between a University in Japan and so they use theirs.
