Final Update 16/09 – 06:45 UTC :

This earthquake caused no casualties or serious damage. It has been looked at by rescue teams. There are some minor cracks in civil housing, and in old adobe houses, the existing cracks widened. Many people rushed outside hearing rocks rolling down the hillside, and a very strong shaking.

The Hotan Prefecture Earthquake Bureau have looked at all the damage and reported back to the central Xinjiang bureau.

This is a great result for such a strong earthquake in China.

It has been rated CATDAT Green.

Update 16/09 – 11:00 : Yutian county and township felt the earthquake strongly.  Some residents of Minfeng county have also felt it  but not strong, which is a good sign. Up to now, we could not detect any report of casualties and/or collapsed or heavily damaged houses.

Update 16/09 – 09:24 : The epicenter of the earthquake was located in the Kunlun Mountains. The fault zone has the same name than the mountains.  As described below

Update 22:07 UTC : Chinese authorities have reported that their rescue teams are under way to the epicenter area, but so far we have NO reports yet.

Update 22:00 UTC : Since 1900, today's greater earthquake area counted for 3 magnitude 7+ earthquakes. All epicenters were located in the mountains.

Update : Following Chinese sources the earthquake epicenter was at Yutian County, Hotan Prefecture (Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region)

Update : The area is mainly desert with a number of bigger cities at 50 to 70 km from the epicenter (USGS Data)

Update : We have only population numbers of the counties :
Niya county has a population of 30,000 people
Keriya county a population of 220,000

Update : the Chinese authorities (to be trusted completely) are mentioning a magnitude of 5.5 at a depth of 6 km!, the reason why we have called this earthquake extremely dangerous.  We expect the first reports from the epicenter area within a couple of hours.
The level of danger will depend on the exact location of the epicenter.  The location of the epicenter given by the Chinese is at the lower hills of the mountain range approx. 40 km from the road linking Niya and Keriya.
