Last update: August 15, 2011 at 8:43 pm by By

Earthquake overview : A new potentially damaging earthquake occurred in the Xinjiang Kizilsu Kirgiz Autonomous Prefecture Artux, Kashi Jiashi County. The shallow depth of 8 km combined with the locally measured magnitude of 5.8 (USGS statistics still show a magnitude of 5.2 at a depth of 35 km)  makes this earthquake extremely dangerous for people living near the epicenter. Chinese authorities proved to be right as 31 people have been injured and hundreds of houses damaged.

Earthquake-report.com does not understand why newspapers all over the world are printing articles about a -5 JMA intensity aftershock near the coast of Japan yesterday and almost NO PRESS WORLDWIDE writes 1 word about the 2 damaging China earthquakes we covered in detail (we however applaud that they are writing about the Japan aftershocks). Once again the China rescue forces did a great job with their swift action,  rescue operations and fact reporting about this earthquake. We congratulate the Chinese Seismological Bureau’s for their very well organized action.

UPDATE 12/08 21:57 : Since the mainshock at least 22 aftershocks occurred in the greater epicenter area. Luckily, the strongest had only a value of Ms 2.3.

UPDATE 12/08 21:48 : The Urumqi – Kashgar railroad track was distorted over a length of 20 km. Railroad traffic was halted during the repair works. Traffic has resumed today.  One of the concerns of the authorities was also the Sickl reservoir where some cracks were detected

Almost all of the houses are build out of brick stones (very vulnerable during earthquakes).

- Some of the roads have also been damaged and there has been ground uplift.

UPDATE 11:25 UTC : In Kizilsu, the biggest town close to the epicenter (439,688) people from different origins are living together.
The ethnic groups are as follow (source Wikipedia) :
Uyghur 281,306 people     63.98%
Kyrgyz 124,533 people    28.32%
Han 28,197 people     6.41%

UPDATE 11:14 UTC : The closest village to the epicenter (if correct) is Gelelukexiang at approx. 25 km. Artux City, approx.

UPDATE 11:07 UTC : We have to remind our readers that we have to be cautious with the Magnitude and depth of these earthquake (the main parameters to distinguish dangerous from harmless). Different agencies are reporting fundamentally different numbers.

UPDATE 11:06 UTC : 23 Historical CATDAT damaging earthquakes within 110 years within 100km radius.
* In 2003 in Bachu county, A Mw6.3 killed 268 and left 110000 homeless, around 50km away.
* In 1977 at about the same epicenter, 8 people were injured when a Ml 6.2 Struck.
* In 1971 at about the same epicentre, a Mw 5.8 at 41km depth, 1 death, 19 injuries with 500 houses destroyed.

UPDATE : Based on the consulted maps, we have the impression that the epicenter is located in a sparsely populated area.  However this is relative as even villages in China are mostly very populated. The bigger cities liker Artux, Kizilsu and Payzawat are distant enough away from the epicenter to avoid damage.

UPDATE : As the Chinese authorities (CENC) have their own instruments close to the epicenter area and based on prior earthquakes , we have a lot of confidence in their own numbers.
