Books (Haiti after the earthquake)
On January 12 this year I stood on the ruined upper level of the cathedral in Port-au-Prince, watching hundreds of Haitians congregating to remember the 230,000 people killed in the earthquake that had struck their capital exactly 12 months before. Surveying the piles of rubble, the destroyed buildings and the “temporary” camps still housing hundreds of thousands of people, it was easy to understand their frustration with the aid effort. $$$

Bulgaria (earthquake prepared city)
Simitli Municipality is ready to respond at any time appropriately in case of earthquake. That is what Mayor of Simitli Apostol Apostolov told FOCUS News Agency. He explained that the situation is calm in the region after registered earthquakes in the last two days. The municipality didn’t receive signals for damages such as cracked and fallen plaster of houses after earthquakes recorded in the region, Apostolov said. “The most seismic region of the Balkan Peninsula is southwestern Bulgaria, Kresna fault, which is located in the municipality of Simitli. People here are accustomed to earthquakes with light magnitude and we almost receive no signals after such earthquakes, the Mayor added. $$$

Japan (Utility executives and political donations)
Japanese utility company executives were by far the biggest individual donors to Japan’s former ruling party during its last year in power, accounting for a whopping 72 percent of personal contributions, a news report said. While the donations amounted to only a small fraction of the Liberal Democratic Party’s operations fund, the revelation is likely to add to questions surrounding connections between power companies and politicians amid the nuclear disaster in northeastern Japan set off by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami. $$$

Japan (additional quake related deaths)
The death toll from the March earthquake and tsunami may rise by hundreds as about 570 possible “related deaths” have been reported in Miyagi, Iwate and Fukushima prefectures. The final death toll will include related deaths such as those from stress and chronic disease while living in shelters. $$$

Haiti (cholera)
Instead of the commuters typically packed into the bright blue and red “tap tap” pickup truck weaving through Haiti’s capital, a man, shrunken, dehydrated, dressed in a diaper and attached to an IV, lay on the floor. As the ad-hoc ambulance in Port-au-Prince attested, cholera refuses to leave the country. The bacterial disease that ravaged Haiti last fall had spread quickly to all regions, but calmed down in the dry spring months. With the rainy season now in progress, clinics across the country are again bustling with seriously ill patients. $$$
