Alaska (Volcano alert)
The alert level for an Alaska volcano is being raised after officials say persistent thermal anomalies have been spotted in satellite data. The Alaska Volcano Observatory on Wednesday raised the level Cleveland Volcano to advisory from unassigned. There is no real-time seismic network at the volcano, located 939 miles southwest of Anchorage on an uninhabited island. Officials are not able to track local earthquake activity related to volcanic unrest. $$$
Iceland (volcano tourism)
“People are really interested. They want to stand in the crater of the volcano that made them lose their flight,” laughs Arsaell Hauksson, in his 30s. He runs a campground at the base of the Eyjafjallajoekull glacier that encompasses the notorious Eyjafjoell volcano, whose eruption in April 2010 stranded more than eight million travellers. $$$
Haiti (earthquake history)
For all of its violent destruction, the earthquake that struck Haiti on Jan. 12, 2010, hardly scratched the surface of the island. But scientists now say they have found some of the best clues to understanding the quake under water. $$$
Preparedness (seismic wallpaper!)
Researchers in Germany are working on a material that can keep walls from collapsing during earthquakes – and even detect them before they happen. The “seismic” wallpaper being developed by scientists at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in western Germany is embedded into a masonry wall imparting “horizontal reinforcement” to the earth’s sharp lateral movements during an earthquake. $$$
Plate tectonics
Plate tectonics is the great unifying theory of geology, which makes it all the more amazing that it has only been accepted for about 50 years. If you think we’ve got it all figured out by now, a paper published this week in Science may surprise you. And you’d be wrong if you were expecting to read about some dusty rock cores. The new information comes from a much shinier source: diamonds. $$$
QuakeSOS+ and QuakeSOS free are iPhone applications developed by Armand Vervaeck, the founder of Earthquake Report. The Application simplifies immediate group communication to friends and family members (with your exact GPS location) and is feeding the users with Earthquake Report news. The 0.99 US$ QuakeSOS+ version will support the activities of SOS Earthquakes.
