Science (tsunami signals in the sky)
Researchers at the University of Illinois have become the first to record an airglow signature in the upper atmosphere produced by a tsunami using a camera system based in Maui, Hawaii. $$$

CNN International will air the NHK-produced documentary ‘Surviving the Tsunami’ on 24 July at 4:30 pm. Utilising Japanese broadcaster NHK’s footage and amateur videos, Surviving the Tsunami gives viewers a look at the destructive power of the catastrophic tsunami on 11 March 2011 and the tales of human survival. $$$

Bangladesh (next great earthquake?)
After the recent great quakes that have swept away entire coastlines and cities in Japan, Haiti and Sumatra, scientists are now looking hard at the nation that may suffer the gravest threat of all: Bangladesh. Japan (communities at risk)
At least 21 of the dozens of communities in northeastern Japan whose residents had moved to higher ground after being swamped by massive tsunamis in the past were flooded by the March 11 tsunami, officials of the Cabinet Office said at a panel meeting Sunday. According to his analysis, most of the 21 communities in Iwate and Miyagi prefectures hit by the recent tsunami were only around 10 meters above sea level. $$$

Conservation groups are urging all nations to ignore Japan’s appeal to resume small-scale commercial whaling off its coast. The annual International Whaling Commission meeting gets underway in the Channel Islands off the coast of France today. $$$

Haiti (Orphans outcome)
Since the earthquake struck Haiti last year, Pastor Edmond Fenelon, his family and thirty-seven orphans have been living in makeshift tents on the countryside. Pastor Fenelon was director of an orphanage located in the Port-au-Prince area of Haiti when the earthquake devastated both the orphanage and his church where he led a congregation. For over a year now, the orphans along with Pastor Fenelon’s family have lived as hundreds of Haitians with no home: in tent cities. $$$

Japan (Nuclear safety tests)
Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano announced Monday a new round of safety tests for the country’s nuclear plants in the government’s latest bid to gain the public’s confidence. The development came less than a week after the government made a surprise announcement that it would conduct “stress tests” on all of the country’s nuclear plants. $$$
