Tsunamis Pacific (failing monitoring gauge)
Tonga has admitted it is woefully ill-prepared for a tsunami, with several systems, including an Australian-run tidal monitoring gauge, failing during this week’s tsunami scare. Tonga’s Director of Meteorology ‘Ofa Fa’anunu has reviewed the Pacific nation’s emergency procedures following Thursday’s magnitude-7.6 undersea earthquake near the Kermedec Islands which officials feared could trigger giant waves. $$$

Iceland (Katla volcano activity)
For the people of Iceland, the past few years must feel like the old saying “when it rains, it pours’: we’ve seen two significant eruptions, one at Eyjafjallajökull and one at Grimsvötn, in less than a year. Earlier this week, there was news that another Icelandic volcano, Hekla, was showing signs of unrest, although it was unclear whether they pointed towards an eruption. $$$

Japan (Nuclear plant tsunami wave simulation)
The tsunami that crippled the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant on March 11 reached a height of 13.1 meters and the waves that hit the nearby No. 2 plant were up to 9.1 meters, Tokyo Electric Power Co. said Friday based on the results of simulations. The simulations indicated that the roughly 4-meter difference in wave heights at the two plants may have been due to several smaller tsunami that repeatedly struck at shorter intervals on the coasts of Miyagi and Fukushima prefectures. $$$

New Zealand (Christchurch hotels)
A New Zealand couple, trapped inside Christchurch’s Hotel Grand Chancellor during the devastating February 22 earthquake, which killed 181 people and reduced most of the city centre to rubble, were this week shocked to receive a £154 bill for their two night stay. The unnamed man and his wife were trapped on the city centre hotel’s 22nd floor and escaped hours later by braving collapsed staircases, smashing down doors and crawling on to the roof of an adjacent car park. $$$

Argentina (EU and UN aid for volcano damage)
The European Union has deployed experts in geology and environmental pollution to Argentina, where they will participate in the independent risk assessment of the eruption of the Chilean Puyehué volcano. The assessment is led by the Joint Environment Unit of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the UN Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). $$$
