New Zealand (Civil Defence and Tsunami alert )
Auckland Civil Defence says there are lessons to be learnt from yesterday’s tsunami alert. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre issued a tsunami warning for New Zealand following a 7.6 magnitude earthquake in the Kermadec Islands. It was cancelled shortly afterwards but Civil Defence stuck by its tsunami warning. Auckland Civil Defence controller Clive Manley says media reports were a bit conflicting in some cases. “We’re analysing that to see how we can work with the media to get a more consistent message across,” he says. $$$$$$

Volcanoes (Media and science)
Usually I’m a pretty reasonable person. However, over the past day, various items in the media have begun to drive me mad. Maybe I’ve been watching too much of Ramsey’s Kitchen Nightmares but I am bleeping irritated with how little fact checking and research some parts of the media have been doing when it comes to reporting on volcanic activity. I mean, just yesterday there were no less than three egregious articles or images floating around in the news (and this doesn’t even get into the fear-mongering). $$$

Japan (tsunami recovery)
Japan’s tsunami recovery stalls. Rigid bureaucracy, the scope of devastation, and a lack of financing are hindering Japan’s comeback from the March earthquake and subsequent tsunami. Some citizens are taking recovery into their own hands. $$$

Hawaii (Kilauea lava lakes)
Volcanic activity at Kilauea continues to feed a pair of lava lakes, one at Puu Oo crater in the east rift zone and another at the summit. In the middle east rift zone, a lava lake fed continuously by a source beneath the northeast edge remained perched in the center of the crater floor, circulating from northeast to southwest, with breaches and overflows onto the crater floor, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. $$$

Argentina (Aid for Chile volcano eruption)
Argentine President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner has unveiled a range of measures to help people hit by last month’s volcanic eruption in Chile. Social benefits are to be doubled and tax payments deferred for two months in the hardest-hit areas of the country. The Puyehue volcano, near the border with Argentina, spewed ash across a wide area, affecting tourism, air travel and agriculture. $$$

Japan (Armani relief aid)
Giorgio Armani dedicated his collection of wildly expensive made-to-measure skintight column dresses and painted-on pantsuits to the victims of Japan’s earthquake and tsunami. $$$

Japan (tsunami and media coverage)
The March 11 Great East Japan Earthquake also sparked a metaphorical tidal wave: a “tsunami of information” that swallowed both the foreign and Japanese media and exposed a widespread lack of journalistic integrity. “The domestic media was slow and not proactive enough in seeking the truth,” says D’Emilia, adding that in the quake’s aftermath, many foreign correspondents were busy peddling “inventions, misrepresentations (and) manipulations.” $$$
