Eritrea (Nabro volcano)
We’ve been getting bits and pieces of the lava flow from Nabro for the past few weeks, but some images from earlier this week reveal the full reach of the flow from vent to snout. It appeared yesterday that the eruption might have ended, but today small plumes can still be seen on the Aqua/MODIS images. Now, after the little sojourn the other day, I don’t think I’ll revisit the messy math of viscosity, but we can see a lot of detail in the Nabro lava flow to give us some clues about the activity at the volcano. $$$$$$

Japan (Ishinomaki rescued elderly)
Everything seemed fine and dandy for 60 residents living in a special nursing home for the elderly here in the Tohoku region when they emerged unscathed from the March 11 Great East Japan Earthquake and ensuing tsunami. However, within two weeks following the disaster, 13 residents would be dead, compared to normal times, when one might die a month. $$$
Haiti (USAID indecent behavior)
Port au Prince, June 28 (Prensa Latina) The outgoing Prime Minister Jean Max Bellerive, described Tuesday U.S. foreign aid agency USAID as indecent, for having spread a report that questioned the number of dead after the earthquake. The report that was published in late May by the organization reduced the death toll in Haiti after the quake to 45,000, at most, 85,000, while the government considers that there were almost 300,000 deaths. $$$

Earthquakes and tsunamis (identifying victims)
International forensic and law enforcement experts met at INTERPOL‘s headquarters Tuesday to discuss methods to identify victims in the wake of natural disasters and terrorist attacks. Around 160 representatives from over 40 countries met within the Standing Committee on Disaster Victim Identification, will emphasize importance of having a global response that uses INTERPOL’s internationally-accepted Disaster Victim Identification (DVI) standards. $$$
Japan (Fishing industry restoration)
The Fisheries Agency released a plan Tuesday for restoring the fisheries industry in the Tohoku region that was devastated by the earthquake and tsunami in March. $$$
Japan (children with radiation meters)
Radiation meters will be distributed to about 34,000 children living in the largest city near the tsunami-damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant to monitor their exposure levels, a city official said Tuesday. $$$
Haiti (promised aid)
More than a year and a half after the earthquake in Haiti, the promised help for the poorest country in the western hemisphere is still unfulfilled, as revealed by a report published here by the United Nations Tuesday. According to the UN, 99 percent of the funds for the reconstruction of the Caribbean nation comes from public entities which so far have disbursed 37.8 percent of the total pledged. $$$
