Earthquake-report.com calls this earthquake dangerous.
A series of shallow moderate to very strong earthquakes near Finschhafen.
The series of quakes with approx. the same epicenter location are going on for several weeks.
These (shallow) earthquakes are very dangerous, but nobody in the world cares about the people in these settlements. 95% of the shallow M 5.5 to M 6.5 coastal earthquakes are not resulting in a (public) published report. Even the local press hardly reports about the aftermath of the very strong earthquakes.
We feel sorry for these people. One thing is certain, if such an earthquake would occur in the Indonesian part of the island, communication would be a lot better. Papua New Guinea is one of the poorest nations in the world. The islands are so vast and the emergency services so limited, that one of the most earthquake hit places in the world has maybe the least rescue capabilities (also in equipment).
Closest settlements at 10 to 20 km : Finschhafen, Gagdu, Buki, Logaweng, Kwalansam and Kasanga.
103 km (64 miles) E (86°) from Lae, New Guinea, PNG

Useful information to read this daily earthquake list
This earthquake list covers important earthquakes in the world.
If a more detailed page is present, the earthquake line will be linked to the detailed page.
For your comfort, we will provide in most cases Google Satellite Map links to give you an idea where the earthquake struck, which terrain it happened and if villages or cities are located in the immediate vicinity. The reference for the time zone is UTC (Coordinated Universal Time, also called GMT)
The page is regularly updated to add new earthquakes.
green color = NOT dangerous for damage or injuries
orange color = MODERATE risk for damage or injuries
red color = CONSIDERABLE risk for damage or injuries

Seismo (Switzerland) recording shallow 5.3 earthquake in Java 2 hrs before PNG quake.
Some have reported this earthquake, others not. Reason : the depth. Suppose that this earthquake (or even stronger) would have occurred below Java (this time it was far out of the coast), the depth would have triggered a weak shaking all over the entire island. Deep earthquakes, even at M 7 are not creating serious damage or injuries. Hope this explains a bit the situation.
