Tens of thousands of Laysan and black-footed albatross chicks on Midway Atoll may have perished in the tsunami following the Great East Japan Earthquake, according to a Japanese oceanic photographer who recently visited the atoll. Midway Atoll is located about 2,000 kilometers from Honolulu and about 4,000 kilometers from the Sanriku coastline. The atoll is a world-famous breeding ground for the Laysan albatross. $$$

Japan (post earthquake opportunities)
The effect of Japan’s earthquake in March has been largely diminishing with staff returning to normal work and suspended projects being revived, said major Chinese software outsourcing companies. The earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan were a sudden blow to the companies as the nuclear radiation leak and troubled facilities around quake-hit areas prevented many outsourcing projects from functioning normally. $$$

Following its three-month long fundraising initiative entitled HOPE for JAPAN, The Peninsula Hotels have raised a total of JPY 42 million (US$515,000) in aid of the victims of the earthquake and tsunami of 11 March 2011. The Peninsula Tokyo’s General Manager, Malcolm Thompson presented a cheque for JPY 42 million on behalf of the hotel group to Mr Ryouichi Hattori, Director General, Organizational Development Department, Japanese Red Cross Society during a cheque-presentation ceremony held at the hotel and attended by in-house guests and members of the hotel staff. $$$
China – Japan (tourism)
Japan will shorten its group visa approval process for Chinese travelers effective from July 1 in order to stimulate slumping tourism in the wake of the 9.0-magnitude earthquake, tsunami and ensuing nuclear crisis that hit the country in March this year. $$$
