Haiti (shelter crime)
On a recent night in Carrefour, a densely packed city of twisted streets outside the Haitian capital, a band of thieves surrounded Roseline Sylvain’s home and slashed the plastic sheet that is the simple structure’s only wall. The men made off with a lamp, not a huge loss, but significant enough for Sylvain and her family. $$$

Japan (Death registration)
The municipal government of Rikuzentakata, Iwate Prefecture, started Saturday accepting death registrations for those who remain unaccounted for since the March 11 earthquake and tsunami. $$$

Eritrea Nabro volcano (lava type)
The NASA Earth Observatory has been doing an excellent job of monitoring the eruption at Eritrea’s Nabro using all their eyes in the sky. The latest image, taken from the EO-1 Advanced Land Imager (see below) suggests that the lava flow on the western side of the caldera has moved approximately 100-150 meters in the period between June 24 to 27. This got me thinking – can we do a back-of-the-envelope calculation to figure out the viscosity of the Nabro lava as a way to further support its basaltic nature? The answer is “yes”! $$$

Indonesia (Merapi volcano area reconstruction)
The process to reconstruct and rehabilitate the Mount Merapi area is expected to be finished in two to three years. Public facilities and housing complexes in the area were severely damaged by cold lava flows from the eruptions of Mount Merapi last October 2010. “Apart from bridges and roads, several sabo-dams are also in damaged condition. We expect to gradually repair the damaged sabo-dams because we have a limited budget. $$$

Japan (exceptional tsunami preparedness)
An expert panel under the government’s antidisaster council urged authorities Sunday to prepare for once-in-a-millennium tsunami in an interim report detailing its review of countermeasures for earthquakes and tsunami in the wake of the March 11 disasters. $$$
