United States (California quake and economy)
A major earthquake in Southern California would have a devastating effect on the region’s economy and workforce, a report says. A 7.8-magnitude quake on the San Andreas could affect 430,000 businesses and 4.5 million workers, a report released Tuesday by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics said. $$$

Japan (aftershocks)
A magnitude 6.7 earthquake rocked Japan today, the 75th aftershock of at least magnitude 6.0 from the devastating magnitude 9.0 quake on March 11, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The earthquake data is preliminary and subject to revision. Japan has been rocked by hundreds of aftershocks since the deadly Tohoku earthquake, the biggest in Japan’s recorded history. $$$

Japan (cleaning up the rubble)
Taiheiyo Cement Corp. on Wednesday began incinerating the burnable parts of the massive amounts of debris created by the March earthquake and tsunami in Ofunato, Iwate Prefecture, at its plant in the northeastern Japanese city. The company will start accepting rubble from Rikuzentakata, another Iwate city, on Thursday. $$$

Japan (disaster relief)
A rare Stradivarius violin that once belonged to the granddaughter of English poet Lord Byron sold for a record 9.8 million pounds ($15.9 million) at auction on June 20 in a charity sale for Japanese disaster relief. The 1721 violin was bought by an anonymous bidder for around four times the previous auction record for a Stradivari violin, according to Tarisio, the online auction house for fine instruments. $$$

New Zealand (foreign visits)
Foreign visitors to New Zealand in April stayed fewer nights in the country than they did in April last year, mainly due to the devastating Christchurch earthquake in February, the government statistics agency said Thursday. Guest nights overall fell 3.7 percent in April year on year and international visitor nights dropped 10 percent, said a statement from Statistics New Zealand. $$$

Saudi Arabia (volcanoes)
Saudi Arabia’s Harrat Lunayyir lava field doesn’t seem the kind of place that would generate much concern from anyone. Rocky where it isn’t covered by sand, the area is bereft of vegetation and human habitation. Summer temperatures can exceed 100 degrees Fahrenheit. True, it is pockmarked with cones formed by eruptions, but those were formed quite a long time ago. But, correctly or not, many Saudis worry about Harrat Lunayyir. Two years ago the area was shaken by a so-called swarm of more than 30,000 mini-earthquakes, which geologists say was caused by magma flows deep underground. The swarm left a 5-mile-long fissure and forced some 40,000 people to evacuate their homes. $$$

Taiwan (Earthquake predictor)
A self-styled Taiwanese “prophet” was convicted on Thursday of “spreading rumors” when he said a monster earthquake would destroy the island last month and fined $1 380, a court said. $$$
