Azerbaijan (earthquake prediction station)
The scientists of the ANAS Cybernetics Institute have built a new seismic-acoustic station at the head of a suspended oil well at Qum Island in the Caspian Sea. 15-20 hours before the actual earthquake, the station registers seismic noises received by means of steel well bores from the deep strata of earth. $$$

Hitachi Ltd. will replace most neon lights for its advertisements on Osaka’s signature Tsutenkaku Tower with light-emitting diodes in a bid to cut electricity consumption by half and contribute to nationwide energy-saving efforts. Debris sucked from the shoreline of Japan by the March 11 tsunami has embarked on a 10-year circuit of the North Pacific, posing an enduring threat to shipping and wildlife, a French green group says. The 9.0-magnitude earthquake and tsunami created an estimated 25 million tonnes of waste, “countless quantities” of which swept out to sea when the wave receded, Robin des Bois (Robin Hood) said. $$$

Taeko Nose says she may never forget the image of her two dogs – “her children” as she calls them – tied up on a leash as she was forced to leave her home during Japan’s nuclear crisis. Certainly three months afterwards, it’s still etched in her mind. “I was told to get into a bus and leave my children behind,” said Taeko Nose, 62, remembering the mandatory evacuation during the nuclear crisis that followed the deadly March 11 earthquake and tsunami that struck northern Japan, killing 15,000 people. $$$

Haiti (temporary migration extension)
The United Nations urged all  governments today to refrain from sending back Haitians to  their country, which is still reeling from an earthquake 18  months ago. The joint appeal by the U.N. refugee agency UNHCR and U.N.  human rights office followed reports of countries including the  Bahamas, Jamaica, Brazil and the United States deporting  Haitians, UNHCR spokesman Adrian Edwards told a news briefing. $$$
