California (earthquake disaster fear)
Of the many possible disasters that could befall Californians, Golden State residents fear earthquakes the most, according to a recent poll. Statewide, 57 percent of voters cite earthquakes as their greatest threat from nature, more than twice the proportion saying wildfires (23 percent), which is mentioned next most often. $$$
Italy (prosecution of scientists)
Scientists and the public need to talk. The prosecution of six Italian geoscientists for failing to predict an earthquake reveals the gulf between experts and the public. I look at this situation not only as an earth scientist, but as an earth scientist whose home is perched above the Cascadia subduction zone, in a region woefully under-prepared for the scale of disaster that will come. The science is, right now, imperfect. I know the probability of the giant Cascadia quake going off in my lifetime is about one in three. It could happen tonight, as I write this article. Or it could happen in 50 years, or in 200. Scientists are working hard to move from calculating probability to being able to predict – but it is not yet certain that earthquake prediction will ever be possible. $$$
New Zealand (Akaroa peninsula volcano active again ?)
I briefly mentioned this on Twitter, but the fear-mongers in New Zealand are working overtime, trying to convince people that Lyttelton near Christchurch is about to erupt again for the first time in millions of years. They suggest a vast conspiracy to hide the evidence of this “impending activity”, but sadly like many conspiracy, there isn’t any shred of real data to support it. There will be no volcanic eruption near Christchurch – but there is still the threat of earthquakes (and the paranoid fantasies of disaster lovers). $$$
Media and volcanoes
Even by the standards of sensationalized volcano stories in the mainstream media the headline in the Sydney Morning Herald and some other news sources today is pretty silly: ‘Red alert as “cork” plugs volcano’. This headline does what such headlines so often do: create a false sense of an urgent, dangerous situation by misrepresenting the facts. That little word ‘as’ is very important in the creation of this effect. The Volcanism Blog
Japan (behavior of marine life after tsunami)
Even hardy marine creatures are showing signs of stress from the disastrous effects of the March 11 Great East Japan Earthquake. Abnormal shell patterns have been found on clams off the coast of Fukushima Prefecture since the tsunami radically changed their habitat, according to research team led by Kenji Okoshi, a professor of environmental dynamic analysis at Toho University. Okoshi’s team studied the density of clams in their habitats and other changes in May at Matsukawaura bay and inlets in Soma, Fukushima Prefecture. These areas are noted for their clam cultivation. $$$
New Zealand (earthquake related migration to Australia)
New Zealanders are migrating to Australia in record numbers following the Christchurch earthquakes, official data showed today. The net number of people leaving New Zealand for Australia in May this year was 3300, Statistics New Zealand said, eclipsing the previous monthly high of 2900 set in 1979. Government statistician Geoff Bascand said a high proportion of the exodus came from Christchurch, with some 800 departing permanently in May, compared to 500 in the same month last year. $$$
QuakeSOS+ and QuakeSOS free are iPhone applications developed by Armand Vervaeck, the founder of Earthquake Report. The Application simplifies immediate group communication to friends and family members (with your exact GPS location) and is feeding the users with Earthquake Report news. The 0.99 US$ QuakeSOS+ version will support the activities of SOS Earthquakes.
