Japan (Tsunami preparedness)
Local governments in tsunami-prone areas are calling for the government to give a clear definition as early as possible of the height of “the largest possible tsunami” predicted by a government panel in preparation for working out countermeasures. $$$
Russia (volcanoes)
The Kizimen and Karymsky volcanoes on Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula spewed ash and gas, accompanied by earth tremors, a Russian science agency said Friday. A spokesman for the Geophysical Service of the Russian Academy of Sciences said as many as 400 tremors have been registered, ITAR-Tass reported Friday. $$$
Azerbaijan (earthquake risk)
From the seismic point of view Azerbaijan is situated in a very dangerous zone, the ANAS Geology Institute’s Geodynamics and Seismology Department Head Fakhraddin Gadirov told journalists on Tuesday. “As a result of movement along the Arabian tectonic plate, constant pressure occurs. The resulting deformation produces earthquakes, volcanic eruptions are taking place, new fissures and cracks form on the land. This poses a great threat to Azerbaijan’s infrastructure, especially in regards to oil,” Gadirov said. $$$
Panama
An unusual signal detected by the seismic monitoring station at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute’s research facility on Barro Colorado Island results from waves in Lake Gatun, the reservoir that forms the Panama Canal channel, scientists report. Understanding seismic background signals leads to improved earthquake and tsunami detection in the Caribbean region where 100 tsunamis have been reported in the past 500 years. $$$
Japan (Nissan)
Nissan officials said the natural disasters have slowed them down a bit too. The new $1-billion plant in Smyrna may not begin producing their lithium-ion batteries on time. Originally they were expected to start in September 2012. Nissan’s vice-president of electric vehicles cited the quake and tsunami in Japan. Nissan has already received 20,000 reservations for its new Leaf vehicle, scheduled to be produced in Smyrna beginning next year. $$$
Record number of earthquakes in 2011
Research by Irish Weather Online, using data from the US Geological Survey (USGS), has found that earthquake activity (5.0-9.9 magnitude) from 01 January to 19 June 2011 is already exceeding the total annual seismic activity for the years 2001, 2002 and 2003. 2011’s total number of recorded earthquakes is also expected to exceed the most seismically active year of the past 12 years, 2007.
