Earthquake Tengchong, Yunnan, China : 2,079 households affected and 6 people injured (3 seriously)

Earthquake summary : Yunnan province, China was again hit on June 20, 2011 by a moderate shallow earthquake during the late afternoon (local time). Based on recent damaging earthquakes, Earthquake-Report.com calls this earthquake very dangerous. It has since been found to be damaging!

UPDATE 21/06 – 07:25 UTC : 18,000 people have been affected, and there are 6 people injured (3 seriously injured, 3 slightly injured). There is no danger for their health, so it is our hope that this earthquake has not been fatal.
Earthquake-report.com again commends the aid effort of the Chinese.

UPDATE 21/06 – 07:19 UTC : In Tengchong county a total of 9,741 rooms (2079 houses) were damaged, (94 rooms of them collapsed). Roads, canals, schools, and health centres were damaged to varying degrees as described in previous posts.

UPDATE 21/06 – 07:14 UTC : Rescue and relief teams providing assistance on the ground have reported that 2079 households in 15 towns and 94 villages were  affected to varying degrees.

UPDATE 20:00 UTC : Update on the damage in China:-
-15 townships have been affected in Tengchong County
-mainshock of Ml5.2, at 10km depth
-419 houses (1500 rooms) have been damaged of which 1 collapsed and 26 severely damaged. 587 barns have also been affected in this rural region with the collapse of 3.
- 3 ditches have been damaged.
- 41 primary and secondary schools have been damaged as well as 18 town health clinics.
- 2 seriously injured and 2 have been slightly injured (no more news found on the other 2 slightly injured).
- Direct loss at the moment has been estimated at 50 million RMB (7.7 million USD)
- Once again, China is an example to the world in response to this disaster as well as the rapid nature of their reporting and support.

At present, Yunnan Seismological Bureau has the emergency deployment of the 34-member working group rushed to the disaster. This earthquake emergency taskforce will carry out monitoring, disaster assessment, advocacy, earthquake knowledge support and disaster reduction work.
In addition, the Yunnan Civil Affairs Department has an emergency allocation of 200 tents, 200 blankets, 200 coats and other emergency relief supplies to disaster areas.
Tengchong County Civil Affairs Bureau has dispatched relief packs to Mangbang with 300 tents, 300 blankets, 300 tents, transported to the township. Tengchong County has been given a capital of 5 million RMB initially for relief (10% of the total direct damage at present).

UPDATE 15:07 UTC : We have reports that 2 other people were seriously injured. So far nobody was killed in this earthquake. 4 other people were slightly injured.

UPDATE 15:14UTC : A total of 13 Fire Brigade trucks have been send to the disaster area.

UPDATE 15:07 UTC : There were NO power outages and telecommunications are working normal

UPDATE 14:40 UTC : Thick fog is making the relief and rescue work very difficult and dangerous.

UPDATE 14:36 UTC : The local authorities have send a shipment of 200 tents, 200 quilts, 200 coats and other emergency relief supplies to the earthquake area.

UPDATE 13:42 UTC : It is currently dark in China which will make rescue and relief actions a lot more difficult.

UPDATE 13:39 UTC : In addition to the 13:16 update,  reports are also confirming the collapse of a number of houses in the rural areas near the epicenter.

UPDATE 13:16 UTC : Situation at the update time : 4 slight injuries – 2 in Mangbang, and 2 in North. Tiles fell from roofs and many cracks in houses in many locations.

UPDATE 12:30 UTC : As you can see on the picture at right, most of the farming in the area happens on hilly terraces. These terraces are very vulnerable for landslides

UPDATE 12:25 UTC : 2 people were rescued from below a collapsed house with luckily minor injuries.

UPDATE 12:10 UTC : We receive reports of collapsed houses. As far as this moment : NO casualties yet.

UPDATE 12:06 UTC : A number of weak aftershocks have shaken the epicenter area soon after the mainshock.

UPDATE 12:04 UTC : The  emergency response people, equipment, materials and a logistics support group with power supplies, communications, accommodation, equipment and supplies were “ready to help” within 1 hour after the earthquake. The team commander gave the order for a 34-man on-site emergency response team to carry emergency equipment and supplies to the epicenter area.

UPDATE 12:02 UTC : Chinese emergency teams have been send to the epicenter area.
Chinese earthquake response is among the best in the world.

UPDATE 12:02 UTC : As you can see on the 3D Google Earth map the closest villages / towns at risk are : Gajiancao, Pingtian and Laopo Ji.

UPDATE 11:59 UTC : The most affected areas for this earthquake are :  Baochan city and Tengchong County.

UPDATE 11:49 UTC : The picture below belongs to the Yunnan Seismological Bureau and indicates the fault lines in this area. The red point, just next to the fault line is today’s epicenter.
