New Zealand (volcanoes)

Australia (tsunami modeling)
The beach suburb of Kingston, south of Hobart, is being used to model the impact of a tsunami on buildings along the shoreline. The landmark study is being done by a PhD student at the University of New South Wales and will produce a computer model that could be used by coastal communities around Australia and overseas. $$$
Japan (identifying bodies)
Dentists work in one room of the Miyagi prefectural police headquarters trying to match dental records with unidentified bodies in the morgue. The dentists check on the type of treatment on the teeth of the bodies and conduct a database search using biometric identification techniques. A number of dentists compare every tooth with various records and discuss among themselves to determine if an identification can be confirmed. $$$
Jamaica (earthquake preparedness)
In late December 2010, acting director of the Seismic Research Centre of the University of the West Indies (UWI), Dr Joan Latchman, warned Caribbean countries to be prepared for an earthquake with a magnitude of 8.0. This was shortly after Trinidad and Tobago was rocked by a 5.1 magnitude quake, and 11 months after a magnitude 7.0 earthquake had wreaked havoc on Haiti. $$$
