Geothermal technology
wo University of Minnesota Department of Earth Sciences researchers have developed an innovative approach to tapping heat beneath the Earth’s surface. The method is expected to not only produce renewable electricity far more efficiently than conventional geothermal systems, but also help reduce atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) — dealing a one-two punch against climate change. $$$

Japan (singing tsunami beaches!)
Despite mounds of debris washed ashore by the tsunami, Kugunarihama beach on Oshima island in the Kesennuma Bay and Kukunakihama beach on the nearby Karakuwa Peninsula both continue to produce their trademark “kyu, kyu” sounds when people shuffle their feet on the dry sand. $$$

Disasters (disabled people)
Guidelines on preparing for natural disasters fail to take the needs of rural communities and disabled people into account $$$

Disaster insurance
The recent spate of natural disasters in the U.S. is a reminder to homeowners that they need to protect their houses and possessions by buying homeowners – and perhaps – special disaster insurance. But obtaining such policies in regions prone to natural disasters, and collecting on it should the need arise, can get complicated. $$$

Philippines (Taal volcano)
“An island on a lake within a volcano on a lake within a volcano.” This is how my good friend and Manila resident, Melwynn, described Taal Volcano and its surroundings to me on my most recent visit to the Philippines. Needless to say, curiosity got the better of me, so the next day we found ourselves on our way to the volcano and the picturesque neighboring town of Tagaytay.
Considered the world’s smallest active volcano, Taal is located just 60 kilometers south of Metro Manila, so is an easy day trip from the capital. $$$
