Very shallow Magnitude 5.3 earthquake in Uyghur Autonomous Region, China

Earthquake summary : A moderate but very shallow earthquake occurred during the morning hours (local time) in Turpan prefecture of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of the People’s Republic of China.

UPDATE 04:34 UTC , 10/06: Updated figures as of 7am Thursday.

China’s central government relief: 1,000 cotton-padded tents, 2,000 quilts and 2,000 cotton-padded jackets.

The earthquake has affected 1,241 people. It has damaged 1,335 rooms. Among the damaged rooms, 168 of them belonging to 50 households were severely damaged. No casualties were reported, however. The 50 families have been relocated.

Llocal authorities have allocated 1 million yuan (around 150000 USD) in relief funds and delivered 50 tents and drinking water to the quake victims.

UPDATE 08:34 UTC : Due to the secondary effect of the earthquake heavy stones (some more than 300 kg)  rolled down to the road and caused a  15 car chain accident. 2 people were seriously injured. The wounded have been taken to hospital.

UPDATE 08:010 UTC : 90% of the houses in the villages closest to the epicenter had cracks in the walls. No houses are reported collapsed.

UPDATE 08:04 UTC : A number of coal mines in the area were also affected by the quake and although the earthquake could be very dangerous, there are no reports of damage or injuries. Normal operation has resumed since.

UPDATE 08:00 UTC : The Turpan – Toksun railway stopped service for two hours and has  resumed normal operation after inspection.

GENERAL UPDATE 07:00 UTC : The Chinese Xinjiang Seismological Network reports a much shallower depth than USGS (=more dangerous).
Following the same source (to be trusted), the epicenter was located at 30 km from Toksun and 80 km from Turpan City.
Toksun County is located in the eastern part of Xinjiang and has according to the 2003 census a population of 107,768.
The epicenter is located below an unpopulated desert.
The mainshock was followed by 2 aftershocks respectively 4.1 and 4.2.
People ran out of their houses and stayed in the garden or on the road as they were scared for aftershocks.
According to local seismologists, earthquakes greater than 5.0 are very rare in this area of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of the People’s Republic of China.
As far as we could check until now, no damage or injuries are reported.
