Greece (Piraeus an island ?)
In the first century AD, a Greek geographer and historian named Strabo noted that a peninsula just south of Athens called Piraeus had, at one time in the past, been an island. It’s unusual for landforms to change so quickly that humans can take notice, even over generations, so that’s a pretty interesting claim. The idea pops up elsewhere in Athenian oral tradition, as well as in the etymology of the name itself (“peran” means “beyond” or “on the other side”), so a group of French and Greek geologists and archaeologists decided to put it to the test. $$$
United Kingdom (potential disasters)
BBC Focus magazine July issue Tornadoes, earthquakes and tsunamis – with a spate of disasters occurring worldwide this year, this month’s issue of Focus magazine looks at the science of predicting the next disaster. But it would seem that the UK has been left out of this global trend. Why is the UK seemingly so immune to these devastating events? $$$
Japan (rotten fish in rice paddies)
As temperatures warm in late spring in areas devastated by the tsunami spawned by the March 11 Great East Japan Earthquake, the stench is worsening and even threatening the health of residents. Rotting fish, such as saury and mackerel, are scattered in rice fields in the Hashikami district of Kesennuma in northern Miyagi Prefecture, which are located about one kilometer from the coast. $$$
Science (buried mangrove layer is weakening quake shaking)
Engineers have long used a soft flexible layer, often made of rubber bearings, between a rigid building and the soil to reduce the impact of ground shaking on the structure. Now French scientists have determined that a buried mangrove layer along the coasts of Guadeloupe Island, close to the Caribbean subduction zone, serves a similar purpose. The mangrove swamps limit the effects of seismic waves on the uppermost sandy layer, reducing the potential of liquefaction from shaking caused by earthquakes. $$$
Science (new fault Lake Tahoe)
Using a radar-like lasar imaging technology, known as LiDAR, scientists have identified a previously unrecognized active fault near the Martis Creek Dam just outside of Truckee, California, possibly representing a significant seismic risk to the greater Lake Tahoe area. $$$
Indonesia (Mount Dieng Volcano activity)
Seismic activity at Mount Dieng in Central Java has calmed down, but officials are not lowering its alert level as the volcano continues to spew dangerous amounts of toxic gas. By the end of May the state of emergency was declared and more than a thousand residents were ordered to evacuate. $$$
The Mount Dieng video below from an Indonesian TV station is showing the toxic gas clouds above slopes of the volcano. Volcano activity which is NOT beautiful to look at, but as dangerous as a normal eruption.
We also like to show you the following video from the Dieng Plateau, showing the sulfurous plateau with evaporating gases. The location is a tourist spot. Of course tourists are banned at the moment.
QuakeSOS+ and QuakeSOS free are iPhone applications developed by Armand Vervaeck, the founder of Earthquake Report. The Application simplifies immediate group communication to friends and family members (with your exact GPS location) and is feeding the users with Earthquake Report news. The 0.99 US$ QuakeSOS+ version will support the activities of SOS Earthquakes.
