Tsunami sensor Caribbean
An unusual signal detected by the seismic monitoring station at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute’s research facility on Barro Colorado Island results from waves in Lake Gatun, the reservoir that forms the Panama Canal channel, scientists report. Understanding seismic background signals leads to improved earthquake and tsunami detection in the Caribbean region where 100 tsunamis have been reported in the past 500 years. $$$

Japan (Tepco compensation payout)
Tokyo Electric Power Co on Tuesday began paying compensation to farmers and fishermen for losses incurred as a result of the nuclear crisis at the utility’s Fukushima Daiichi power plant triggered by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami, the company said. The day’s preliminary compensation payments accounted for around 500 million yen of the 3.4 billion yen requested by three organizations in Ibaraki and Tochigi prefectures. $$$

New Zealand (Christchurch)
The remains of five more victims of the February 22 Christchurch earthquake have been identified, the chief coroner has announced.  The Disaster Victim Identification team has presented enough evidence on five of the previously unidentified victims of the rthquake for Coroner Sue Johnson to make a positive identification. They are: Matthew Lyle Beaumont, age 31 (male), of Christchurch, Jin-Yan Leng, age 30 (female), of China, Xiujuan Xu, age 47 (female), of China, Di-Di Zhang, age 23 (female), of China, Xioa-Li Zhou, age 26 (female), of China $$$

Haiti (refugee camps)
The mayor of a large city in the Haitian capital region has begun clearing out camps set up after last year’s earthquake, evicting hundreds of people amid heavy rains and the start of the hurricane season today. Mayor Wilson Jeudy of Delmar city says the settlements – densely packed clusters of wooden shanties and tarps – have become staging areas for robberies, rapes and other crimes. But panicked residents say they have nowhere else to live or seek shelter. The area has seen weeks of punishing rain. $$$

Japan (Nuclear plant jumpers)
A group of more than 200 Japanese pensioners are volunteering to tackle the nuclear crisis at the Fukushima power station. The Skilled Veterans Corps, as they call themselves, is made up of retired engineers and other professionals, all over the age of 60. They say they should be facing the dangers of radiation, not the young. $$$
