United Kingdom (volcanic ash and air space)
The UK government has appointed its chief scientist to oversee the UK’s reaction to any future volcanic ash clouds. Professor Sir John Beddington is to head a peer review group that will analyse sources of data on ash concentrations. Transport Secretary Philip Hammond said this would establish how best to update the model used by the Met Office to predict ash cloud movements. $$$
Turkey (Simav earthquake damage)
The extent of the structural damage caused by a recent earthquake in Kütahya was far greater than it should have been, Turkey’s main opposition has revealed in a technical report that suggests there was a failure to plan for temblors. “A conclusion has been reached that in the pre-disaster phase, existing regulations and articles of relevant legislations were not adequately followed, especially during the processes of the selection of locations, preparation of projects and construction. $$$
Hawaii (Japan mourning lantern ceremony)
Thousands of people floated lanterns in the ocean from a Honolulu beach Monday to remember loved ones and pay tribute to ancestors in an annual Memorial Day ritual that has its origins in Buddhist traditions from Japan. In a year marked by natural disasters, the thoughts of many who attended were with those who lost their lives in the March 11 earthquake and tsunamis in Japan. $$$
New Zealand (Christchurch hotel occupancy)
New Zealand and overseas guests spent 165,000 fewer guest nights in Canterbury during March, as the Christchurch earthquake stripped the city of capacity. Statistics New Zealand’s accommodation survey shows guest nights fell 5.4 per cent nationally in March than one year ago, while international guest nights fell by 24 per cent across the South Island during the same period. $$$
Japan (temporary housing)
Construction of temporary housing is under way in quake-affected areas. According to a report by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, 18,000 houses have been completed, but an estimated 30,000 more are still needed. $$$
