Many Christchurch residents are frustrated by the slow progress on repairing their quake damaged city. The Earthquake Commission are urging people to make claims for any damage sustained in the February 22 earthquake – even if the have not seen their property since the quake. Cantabrians have until the end of today to make claims for property and contents damaged in the magnitude 6.3 quake. By law, EQC cannot accept any claims after midnight. $$$
World gymnastics championships
The International Gymnastics Federation’s Executive Committee decided Friday not to step in and move the worlds, the main qualifier for the 2012 Olympics in London. Instead, the final decision will come this weekend from the FIG Council, which originally awarded these world championships to Tokyo four years ago. $$$
Haiti (reconstruction)
A shipping container full of pre-fabricated homes is one step closer to embarking on a voyage from Nova Scotia to Haiti where they will be available to help Haiti’s rebuilding effort. On Saturday volunteers in Truro packed up 90 of the ready-made homes in a church parking lot. $$$
Japan (insurance payouts)
Insurance payments to victims of the March 11 earthquake and tsunami will amount to around 2.6 trillion yen, probably making it the biggest insurance payout resulting from a natural disaster in Japan, a Kyodo News tally showed Saturday. $$$
New Zealand (Christchurch)
The 12-hour global telethon to raise money for earthquake-hit Christchurch has now collected more than $1 million. The telethon, exactly three months after February’s devastating earthquake, is being broadcast by Maori Television from studios in Christchurch, Wellington and Auckland from 9am to 9pm with live crosses to centres in London, Los Angeles and Sydney. $$$
