FINAL UPDATE 12:37 UTC : The Sichuan earthquake has only caused minor cracks in houses, fallen tiles etc.
The Sichuan Seismological Bureau did immediately start-up the appropriate emergency response procedures, the assignment of local earthquake disaster mitigation department to quickly investigate and understand the earthquake disaster situation, and report the relevant collected information.
Qingchuan Earthquake Disaster Prevention Bureau did send a work team to go and investigate the epicenter area. They have reported that some walls of adobe houses showed minor cracks and also some deepening cracks in the ground from past earthquakes were reported.
Local telecommunications, transportation and other infrastructure is operating without problems. Currently, there has been no report of casualties.
UPDATE 08:29 UTC : Chinese people living in Chengdu, Mianyang, Nanchong and Zigong did call the hot-line of their local newspapers and reported a sometimes strong shaking.
UPDATE 08:03 UTC : The earthquake was also felt in Chengdu, 300 km from the epicenter (weak shaking)
UPDATE 07:55 UTC : As explained in this website many times before, earthquake-report tend to believe that the Chinese data is the most reliable (Chinese seismological services are highly trained people supported by an excellent organization). Based on the Chinese data we will soon lower our alert color to Green (from Orange).
UPDATE 07:49 UTC : Chinese government measuring stations are indicating a FAR LOWER magnitude of 4.3, also at a shallow depth of 12 km. Epicenter 15 km to the NorthWest of the USGS location (below a river valley and almost below the following cities : Muyuzhen, Banqiaoxiang and Qinnaxiang.
UPDATE 07:40 UTC : Other seismological bureau data :
EMSC : Magnitude 5.0 @ a depth of 10 km (epicenter location (green arrow))
GFZ : Magnitude 4.9 @ a depth of 41 km (epicenter location (green arrow))
GFZ data would color green (reason depth), USGS and EMSC are coloring Orange to Red (earthquake-report alert colors)
Moderate but dangerous earthquake in Sichuan. Even at moderate magnitudes, Sichuan earthquakes tend to be dangerous if close to populated areas. The outcome of the earthquake will be dependent on the exact location and depth data. Our preliminary statement is based on the USGS data. An epicenter 30 km more to the SouthEast of the current epicenter would be even a lot more dangerous.
Most important Earthquake Data:
Magnitude : 5.0
UTC Time : Sunday, May 15, 2011 at 07:05:33 UTC
Local time at epicenter : Sunday, May 15, 2011 at 03:05:33 PM at epicenter
Depth (Hypocenter) : 15.5 km
Only a few km from Guanyindianxiang
31 km (19 miles) WNW (282°) from Guangyuan, Sichuan, China
