This is the official statistics on the death and missed persons count after the tsunami in Japan as known on April 4,  5 AM UTC
Fatalities : 12,157 - Missing : 15,49627,655

Missing statistics
It should be noted that as of the last 2 reports from Miyagi prefecture, they have moved the “missing” counts to unknown in Matsushima Azuma City (predicted 600), Sendai (predicted 200), Hazime Matiyama (predicted 500), Minami Sanriku (predicted 824 to 3000).

Thus the missing count is more likely between 2100 and 5100 people higher than the above figure of 15496.

We are sorry for the bad news, but there is a lot of error ridden reporting going around the world, so we thought that we would clear up that for everyone.
Until Miyagi prefecture puts numbers on the missing in these towns, we will keep this note in place.

Thus, there are 12,157 dead and between 17596 and 20596 missing .
